Chinese and other Asian markets are a growing piece of the smartphone market landscape, but we know the expectations of the buyers in those countries differs from other global markets as there is more emphasis on low price. Apparently one thing that may not be different is interest in wearable devices like smartwatches. To capitalize on that, a newly leaked image suggests Meizu has a device in the works as part of the Blue Charm line of devices.
The leaked image, which may have been pulled from its original posting, purports to show some internal hardware for a Meizu Blue Charm Watch. If true, the device would join the Meizu M1 smartphone and the Meizu Blue Charm Note in the portfolio.
As can be seen in the image, it looks like Meizu has opted to go with a round watch face, following the path of the Motorola Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R. No other details are available about possible specs or other features of a Meizu smartwatch, but odds are the price will be low compared to other devices and it will only be available in China or Asian markets close by.

Since Dell’s brand new, incredibly gorgeous, XPS 13 launched at CES, we’ve been slowly watching it roll out in various locations. Previously British buyers – like the person writing this article – only had the top spec, Intel Core i7 versions to choose from, commanding a top end price, too. Now, though, there’s at least a slightly lower priced option to choose from, with the addition of an Intel Core i5 model to the UK store.
Based on hype alone, you’d think that sapphire was the ultimate replacement for glass on phone screens. However, that’s not totally true — while sapphire is extremely scratch-resistant, it’s both more expensive and more likely to shatter if your device nose-dives into the sidewalk. Corning may have found a way to combine the best properties of both materials, though. It recently teased Project Phire, a glass that’s as resistant to drops as Gorilla Glass 4 while touting scratch protection that “approaches” sapphire. The company isn’t saying much more about the technology at this point, but it should go on sale sometime later this year.
Corning hasn’t said which companies are interested in Phire, but it should be important for safeguarding both smartphones and wearables. Although sapphire is cheap enough now that it’s not just reserved for luxury phones and watches, it’s still expensive. You’ll only see it on mid-range and high-end Apple Watch models, for example. Phire potentially brings that kind of anti-scratch protection to lower-cost smartwatches, and makes it more practical for the large displays of modern phones. There’s no doubt that this is a defensive move on Corning’s part — the company was quick to lash out at rumors of sapphire iPhone screens last year and otherwise do what it could to prevent its big clients from ditching glass. Still, that reactionary approach is good news if it means you can keep your devices looking pristine without having to be overly cautious.
Still coping with persistent rumors about Apple prototyping ARM-based Mac, Intel’s chief financial officer, Stacy Smith reaffirmed the company’s position that Apple would take a big performance hit if they moved away from Intel’s chips. According to Business Insider:
“Our leadership over the rest of the industry is extending,” Smith said. “We’re not delayed relative to the industry. We’re actually ahead of the industry.”
“For a customer like Apple you’d have to take a big step off performance to step off our architecture,” Smith said. “That is what in essence enables us to win across different customers.”
Apple prototypes everything that’s sensible for a company like Apple to prototype. Going into production with alternate chipsets, however, would be something else entirely. Broadwell delays notwithstanding, there would have to be significant gain or opportunity for Apple to move any part of the Mac lineup to ARM.
If nothing else, however, the rumors no doubt help encourage Intel to keep moving in a direction that fits with Apple’s needs.
The story is not an unfamiliar one – market leader stagnates in the top position while competitors continue to stay sharp and eventually the leader fades away. Two recent examples come to mind – Nokia and Blackberry. Only a decade ago, those two names ruled in the cell phone market, but today the two of them are on life support and on the verge of being consigned to the history bin. Motorola’s president Rick Osterloh thinks Samsung could be in the same position and Motorola is poised to step into the top position.
No doubt Samsung has built a large empire in the smartphone and mobile device market, easily rivaling their closest competitor Apple and blowing away other manufacturers. Despite that success, 2014 was not a good one for Samsung and many are wondering whether the company is on the precipice of a fall.
Meanwhile, after spending some time under Google’s umbrella where their operations were somewhat limited, Motorola is now a part of Lenovo and has big plans to start expanding to new markets starting this year. One of those key markets will be China where buyers expect top-performing smartphones without the premium price.
Osterloh thinks Motorola is positioned to capitalize on a potential changing of the guard:
“Every seven years, the person who’s been on top of the market has gone away. We are going through one of those fascinating shifts where people are starting to realize that you don’t need to pay $600 for a top-tier phone to get a top-tier experience.”
Under Google, Motorola started down a path where they de-emphasized specs in favor of enhancements to the user experience. While top hardware is back in the mix to some extent, as shown by Motorola plans to use a Snapdragon 810 chip in a new flagship device for 2015, the company hopes to take the smartphone to new levels that includes offering better value for buyers without sacrificing performance.
Do you think Motorola will challenge Samsung for the top spot or will that come from other upstarts like Xiaomi?
