Pocket ghost detector may be as hard to find as its targets

GhostArk

Let’s get this out of the way: ghost detection is based on junk science. It’s trying to prove something that’s unprovable almost by definition, using theories that have little connection to the real world. But if you are going to chase phantoms, you might as well have the best technology at your disposal, right? GhostArk certainly thinks so. It’s developing a pocketable ghost detector that supposedly has everything you need to track down supernatural beings, including an electromagnetic field meter, high-sensitivity microphones, radio frequency sweeping and sensors for both atmospheric pressure and temperature. Think of it as an audio recorder on steroids — you can even add white noise to “bolster the spirits’ strength.” It’s a clever concept, even if none of its findings would stand up under academic scrutiny.

The scientific method isn’t this gadget’s only nemesis, though. There’s also a question of whether or not it’ll become a tangible product, at least in a reasonable time frame. GhostArk wants to ship its haunt-hunting machine this summer, but the only public details at the moment are 3D models and a batch of vague testing claims. For now, it’s about as imaginary as the ghosts it’s meant to track down. We’ve reached out to the company to get a sense of its progress, and we’ll let you know if there’s more to share. Either way, you’ll probably want to think carefully about shelling out $199 ($249 at retail) for a device that’s unlikely to ever live up to its billing — arguably, you’d get more mileage out of a Ghostbusters model car.

Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA hitting Samsung Galaxy S5 in Australia now

Android Lollipop with Google logo

One of our lucky readers in Australia woke up this morning to a little surprise from Samsung, Android 5.0 Lollipop has landed on his Galaxy S5.

We’ve seen the latest version of Android roll out to the same device in other markets around the globe. Starting in Poland it moved across Europe, but it is now time for the land down under to have their turn. Please keep in mind that we can’t be sure if this is a full roll out for all Galaxy S5 users in Australia, but where there is one, there is sure to be more.

If you have not been reading along the included upgrades to the Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 5.0 Lollipop, you have a few improvements and changes to look forward to. Aside from the new version of Android, with all of its Material Design visuals, and a handful of new Android Lollipop features, look for a change in your lock screen, borrowed from the Note 4.

In addition, Samsung has updated the driver for the fingerprint sensor in your S5, the result, as confirmed by our reader, is drastically improved performance when scanning your fingerprint.

Any other Australians out there seeing Android 5.0 Lollipop for their Samsung Galaxy S5 this morning?

Thanks to Marcus for the tip.

CyanogenMod Nightlies

Keep in mind, of course, that Cyanogen is in works to change things up for their popular custom ROM, having recently sworn off of Google’s Android stream.

There is even word that Microsoft is working with Cyanogen. We’ve taken the time to discuss this all in our Friday Debate this past Friday, and stay tuned with us later today, we’ll be headed to our new Friday Debate Podcast with the same topic.

Voice calling finally starting to appear for some WhatsApp users

whatsapp_calling_feature_01Many users have been anticipating WhatsApp to finally bring voice calling to its application sometime in 2015, and it looks like the feature is beginning to roll out to some users. The calling, like WhatsApp messaging, uses an internet connection to place a phone call instead of relying exclusively on a carrier’s network to handle the call.

The updated calling interface isn’t available to everyone, but according to some Reddit users, if you already have the update you can get another person in on the voice calling action by placing a call to them, forcing the interface update. WhatsApp hasn’t made anything official just yet, so this is all pure speculation and trial and error.
Regardless, if you’ve been wanting voice calling through the app, you shouldn’t have to wait too much longer. If some users are seeing it, we can probably expect a massive launch for everyone in the near future.

Apple Watch Edition will reportedly be stored in special safes inside Apple Stores

The gold version of the upcoming Apple Watch could be stored in safes installed inside Apple Retail Store. 9to5Mac:

The safes will likely be used to carry both to-be-sold inventory as well as to store demo units from the show floor overnight. The custom-designed safes will be outfitted with Apple Watch MagSafe chargers in order to keep the demo units charged up and ready to go for the next day of business.

Apple has said in the past that the Apple Watch Sport will have a starting price of $349, but it has yet to comment on the cost of the gold and rose gold Edition collections. Rumors have ranged from over $1000 to up to $10,000. Given the small size and high value, like jewelry, some form of security certainly makes sense.

The Apple Watch ships this April.

Windows 10 on Xbox One and why it goes beyond gaming

Last week Microsoft presented to the world a unified ecosystem from the television down to a smartphone with Windows 10. We knew this was coming, hence the name change to Windows Central and our expanding Xbox coverage.

With Microsoft’s unification, they revealed that the Xbox One is a part of their long-term vision, and the Xbox brand will stay in Seattle despite continuous rumors of it being spun off. So, for those of you that tend to ignore Xbox news, I’m here to show why you shouldn’t automatically dismiss and instead embrace it.

Top free antivirus apps for Android

There are a ton of options when it comes to antivirus apps on your Android phone or tablet — but there are only a handful of truly free ones. Many offer free features, with more robust features available as at a premium or subscription basis. You can get just as many great features from an unrestricted free app however. And in this case we’re talking all-the-way free.

So while we still contend that you don’t necessarily need a virus scanner on Android, it’s still a conversation we’re going to have, and we’re going to look at some of the apps that are currently available.

All of these apps offer the basics like virus and malware scanning, but a few also have features that go beyond, like app managers, app locks, privacy controls, phone finder, remote wipe and more. So if you’re looking for a great free antivirus app for Android, look no further than these apps.

Help! My Android has malware!

What to do if you think you’ve got an infected Android phone or tablet

We’ve talked about antivirus apps for Android a little, specifically if you really need to use one at all. It’s a good thing to talk about and sort through all the FUD and nonsense about malware on our smartphones and tablets.

Today, we’re going to talk about what to do if you think you might be infected by malware. There’s always plenty of discussion (and sometimes a bit of fear-mongering) about how to prevent malware on Android, but very little about what to do if it happens to you. Prevention is still the best idea, whether it’s from careful monitoring of the things you do or by using an app to monitor for you, but you can survive a malware attack.
