‘Bejeweled’ co-creator has a new studio devoted to ‘social’ virtual reality

Leading Video Game Companies Hold News Conferences To Open E3

What do you do after co-founding a studio responsible for myriad massive successes? From Bejeweled, to Peggle, to the massively popular Plants vs. Zombies, former PopCap Games co-founder John Vechey left a wake of breakthrough gaming franchises. After 15 years, he took a brief break. And now, five months after his amicable departure from the studio, Vechey’s taking his hit-making talent to a new medium: virtual reality. Today he announced Pluto VR, an augmented-and-virtual reality studio named after our solar system’s most (loved) distant planet-like mass.

Vechey made it clear that he wasn’t interested half-baked VR experiences. He wants to steer clear of creating something that’s “good because it’s virtual … but is still way worse than real life,” he said when I talked to him recently. “That’s not what we’re aiming for.” Instead, he said Pluto VR is trying to make social experiences and software that are “better than [being there] in person” for the likes of Oculus Rift, Google Cardboard and Samsung’s Gear VR.

The first step is building a technological base that makes it easier to do multi-user virtual reality. Then you have to start developing some concepts for how to bring people together in the virtual world. “Virtual reality is hard. Anything multiplayer is hard,” he said. “They compound each other, it turns out. There’s a huge technological investment that needs to be there.”

Vechey is already thinking about projects like a virtual conference room, replete with an interactive whiteboard (the “number one collaboration tool” in an office, he said). He’s also floating ideas like shared, virtual workspaces and party games like Cards Against Humanity, Apples to Apples, Mafia and Werewolves. “We’re doing the baseline tech around those use cases because a lot of the hard work is similar between all of those,” he said. “All of those seem very different from a feature-set standpoint, but, from a VR multi-user one, in terms of what’s gonna break and what’s not, they’re all pretty similar.” All that is to say, Pluto’s working to crack the hard parts of shared virtual gatherings for everyone else.

Over the course of our hour-long conversation, a few things became pretty clear. Namely, lot of what Vechey said echoes Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for VR: communal social experiences in a virtual world. That, and his team (comprised of four co-founders, including a former director of technology from Walt Disney Animation Studios) has a lot of big ideas, but they all seem early in the conceptual phase. I posed a hypothetical question to him: If a consumer VR product were announced at the Game Developers Conference next week and it would go on sale soon thereafter, when could we see Pluto VR’s first project?

Surprisingly, he said that if making launch day wasn’t possible, it’d be a matter of weeks, not months or years, before the public experienced Pluto’s work. “I think we have enough lessons [learned] that we could get something out that was simple enough and was still cool and usable.”

“It wouldn’t be world-shattering,” he admitted.

“That’s a really long-winded answer saying ‘Yeah, we have something!’” he said. “Would it be Wii Bowling? I can’t say, but would it be something that we stand by and allow people to think about VR differently and allow for something fun and useful? I think so.” Given Vechey’s work at PopCap, I’m inclined to believe him.

Amazon making Firefly available on all Fire HD tablets

Amazon_Fire_Phone_Main_TA

Last year one of the most buzzworthy stories of the tech world was the release of the Amazon Fire smartphone, the giant retailer’s first foray into the mobile phone market. The device, despite all the attention it received, never seemed to generate sufficient sales interest as revealed by the $83 million in inventory Amazon was holding at the end of the third quarter. In what may be a sign of cannibalization of the Fire smartphone, Amazon is making the Firefly software that came on the device available for all Fire HD tablets.

Firefly is Amazon’s answer to an app like Google Goggles, the plethora of QR code scanners, and music identification programs like Shazam. Firefly combines all of these so users could use their device to scan objects, books, movies, posters, QR codes and other items to get more information about them. Amazon included 245,000 movie and television episode titles in the library, 160 live TV channels, and 35 million songs. Users of the app did note that it had an unsurprising tendency to direct users to Amazon for potential purchases whenever they scanned an item if it was available from the retailer.

The Firefly app update is being pushed out as an OTA update to all Fire HD tablets, although the Fire HDX 8.9 tablet already had access to it.

The other big piece of software that Amazon included on the Fire smartphone was called Dynamic Perspective and created the 3D effects on the phone. Amazon may eventually decide to push that out as well as a way to make their line of tablets more attractive to buyers in the tablet market.

Motorola will let you customize your next smartwatch

Motorola’s philosophy is that if you can’t customize it, it probably isn’t worth buying, which is why Moto Maker will soon let you tailor the Moto 360 to your individual taste. In an interview with Wired, the company’s Dickon Isaacs said that the option to pick a case color, band material and size were always planned for the smartwatch, but had to be postponed for time reasons.

When Moto Maker is relaunched in March, users will be able to pick the color of their watch as well as the size and material of the strap. The case will be sold in a choice of black, silver or champagne gold, while the straps come in two sizes in leather or metal. In addition, users will also be able to pick one of 11 watch faces to appear as the default — although you’ll still be able to change this at your whim, naturally.

iPhone Accounts for Nearly 90% of Smartphone Industry Profits in Fourth Quarter [iOS Blog]

iphone6-stockThe latest numbers from Strategy Analytics reveal that Apple continued to dominate in global smartphone profit during the fourth quarter of 2014, capturing a record-high 88.7% share of profit during the three-month period ending December. Apple earned quarterly operating profit of $18.8 billion on iPhone sales, up from $11.4 billion during the fourth quarter of 2013.

“Global smartphone operating profit grew 31 percent annually from US$16.2 billion in Q4 2013 to US$21.2 billion in Q4 2014. Android hardware vendors combined took a record-low 11 percent global smartphone profit share, down from 29 percent one year ago. In contrast, Apple iOS captured a record-high 89 percent profit share, up from 71 percent in Q4 2013.”

Overshadowed by the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Android suffered a sharp decline in smartphone profit compared to its 29.5% share in the year-ago quarter. Android accounted for a record-low 11.3% share of global profit during the fourth quarter based on $2.4 billion in operating profit. Android had operating profit of $4.8 billion in the year-ago quarter. BlackBerry, Windows Phone and other mobile platforms recorded zero operating profit during the quarter.

Smartphone Profits Q4 2014 Strategy Analytics
These numbers reiterate that the smartphone industry is largely a two-horse race between Apple and Google, whether it be overall platform market share, enterprise market share or smartphone profit share. But if smartphone makers such as Samsung are unable to make decent profits based on the Android ecosystem, Strategy Analytics suggests that vendors may give more attention to alternatives such as Windows, Tizen or Firefox in the future.

Decline in profits forces Samsung to freeze employee salaries

Samsung-Logo-Wordmark-RGB

It’s no secret that Samsung has been struggling to replicate its past success in the mobile industry. The profits churned in by the company have declined rapidly, even threatening an executive reshuffle late last year.

A new report now suggests that the Korean manufacturer has put a hold on the employee salaries given the financial situation that it’s in right now. It’s important to note that the last time the company did something similar was back in 2009, which was incidentally before it went big with the original Galaxy S handset.

In order to increase profits, Samsung has implemented certain cost cutting measures. Employees were asked to take time off vacation to get back into work, while executives were urged to take economy class flights for a journey of under 10 hours. The company has also done some employee reshuffling, which has helped to some extent.

Samsung has placed all its eggs in the Galaxy S6 basket now and will hope dearly for its success. Judging by what we’ve seen in the leaks so far, it seems like Samsung will not disappoint. The handset is expected to be unveiled this Sunday on the 1st of March.
