The new Photos app for Mac included in pre-release build of OS X 10.10.3

The all new Photos app for Mac, which Apple first announced and demoed at WWDC in June 2014, is now available in a pre-release version of OS X 10.10.3. The download can be accessed available by approved testers and developers.

The new Photos app has been made to replace the current iPhoto software for Mac. Apple has also posted more info on the new Photos app, which will be officially released sometime later this spring:

The beautiful all-new design of the Photos app uses Moments, Collections, and Years views to automatically organize your photos and videos by time and location. With dramatically more screen space devoted to your photos, you can easily scan your entire library at a glance and quickly find the content you’re looking for. A new, streamlined toolbar puts the right controls at your fingertips, giving you instant access to the photos you’ve shared, the albums you’ve made, and the projects you’ve created. And you can even use gestures to browse your entire photo collection with just a touch.

The pre-release version of OS X 10.10.3 is also available to download for developers via the Mac Dev Center.

Apple Seeds First OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite Beta to Developers With Mac Photos App

os_x_yosemite_round_iconApple today seeded the first beta of OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite to developers, just over a week after releasing OS X 10.10.2 to the public. OS X 10.10.3 includes the much-anticipated Photos app for Mac.

The new is available through the Software Update mechanism in the Mac App Store and should be available in the Mac Dev Center soon.

Recent rumors questioned the removal of mentions of the Photos app for Mac from Apple’s website, suggesting it might be delayed, but today’s beta release indicates that it is still on track for an early 2015 launch.

Swatch to enter smartwatch game

Swatch_Watch_01

Now that we are in the smartwatch era, traditional watch makers are starting to feel threatened just a tad. Companies like Fossil, Citizen, Bulova, Rolex, and others will have to decide if they want to change their strategy. One such company isn’t waiting around. Swatch has already announced their intention to offer a smartwatch to compete with the likes of Apple and Google.

Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek said, “Swatch will launch a new generation of its smart Swatch in the next two to three months.” Since smartwatches could slow sales of Swatch’s entry-level brand by as much as 10% and midrange brands (Tissot and Mido) by as much as 5%, this can’t be a surprise.

Now it’s unlikely to run Android Wear, but it appears Swatch won’t just offer something simple. The plan is for it to even include such things as mobile payments. It’s expected to be compatible with not only Android, but Windows too. I will be surprised if it isn’t compatible with iOS as well.

Swatch is waking up because of Apple. At first, they didn’t think much of Samsung’s Gear offerings or even Android Wear, but once Apple made it official, they started feeling the threat.

Would you be interested in a Swatch smartwatch?

Scientists build silicon transistor just one atom thick

Silicene

Step aside, graphene, “silicene” is the trendy new nano-material in town that could one day supercharge future tech. Scientists have created the world’s first transistor out of the silicon-based material, and it’s a mere one atom thick. Unlike its much-maligned graphene cousin — which has yet lived up to its vast potential — silicene is a much more interesting material for computer scientists. Thanks to the silicon base, it can form “band gaps” necessary for transistors, which could one day lead to faster chips that consume less power.

The feat came as a surprise to many observers, despite the fact that the “chip” only lasted a few minutes to due its instability. Up until recently, silicene was only a theoretical material and nobody expected a transistor to be built from it anytime soon. But the team succeeded by condensing an atom-thick layer onto a block of silver in a vacuum, then sealing it with alumina. Afterwards, they peeled away the silicene material from the silver block, leaving thin layers of silver and aluminum as protection. Scratching away portions of the silver resulted in a rudimentary, but functional transistor.

Up until recently, silicene was only a theoretical material and nobody expected a transistor to be built from it anytime soon.

The scientists plan to hone the process to create longer-lasting, functional chips in the near term. However, there’s still some serious barriers, given the instability of silicene in the real world and difficulty in working with it. But as one scientists said, “The major breakthrough here is the efficient low-temperature manufacturing and fabrication of silicene devices for the first time.” That’s still quite a feat, but whether it leads to useful gadgets or not is a wide open question.

Five-Star Productivity Pack, $59.99

Ask any auto-mechanic what’s in their tool-kit and you’ll likely hear that he or she couldn’t function without a wrench, screwdriver, or power-drill. Step into the kitchen and pose that same question to a chef or baker and, while you’re guaranteed to get a different answer, the sentiment is the same. Whatever your hobby or profession, there’s zero chance that you’re going to be productive without the right tools at your disposal. That’s why, with this new Five-Star Productivity Pack, we’ve put together the tools that everyone needs, regardless of profession or interest, to help you cut down the obstacles that stand between you and your daily goals.

This bundle delivers 1-year premium subscriptions to four of the hottest productivity apps on the market: Pocket, Wunderlist, Evernote, and Last Pass. I’m a huge advocate for Pocket, an extremely simple app that allows you to save articles and web content for later viewing. Wunderlist is a taskmaster’s dream and is widely heralded as the to-do list app. Evernote is the perfect companion for scatterbrains, seamlessly organizing your notes and reminders. Last Pass, of course, is the safe answer to all password fatigue.

Already subscribe to one of these life-savers? No problem, the additional year will be tacked on to the end of your subscription and ensure that your productivity does not stop. If that weren’t reason enough to jump on this pack, we’re throwing in a 3-month trial to Dropbox Pro (one of the most popular cloud storage solutions) for new users. Last, but certainly not least, to stay productive, you’ve gotta stay informed. That’s why we’re finishing off the bundle with an 8-week digital subscription to The New York Times! While these services, separately, would cost you almost $200, AndroidGuys readers can grab the entire pack for just $59.99 and begin improving productivity immediately.

Smartphone Futurology: The science behind smartphone glass

Welcome to Smartphone Futurology. In this new series of science-filled articles, Mobile Nations guest contributor Shen Ye walks through current technologies in use within our phones, as well as the cutting-edge stuff still being developed in the lab. There’s quite a bit of science ahead, as a lot of the future discussions are based on scientific papers with a vast amount of technical jargon, but we’ve tried to keep things as plain and simple as possible. So if you want to dive deeper into just how the guts of your phone function, this is the series for you.

This is the final instalment — for now — in our series on the future of smartphone technology. This week we’ll cover the science behind one really important area of smartphone build quality — the glass of the touchscreen. And as we’re wrapping up the series, we’ll also see how the current state of mobile tech compares to predictions made almost a decade ago. Read on to learn more.

FiftyThree today announced an update to its popular drawing and illustration app Paper that will give users of the app free access to every tool and feature previously locked behind an in-app purchase.

The app is free to download, but users who wanted a more in-depth editing and drawing suite had to pay up to $3.99 for the entire “essential tools” package (originally priced at $7.99) to get access to the best of the bunch. Wireless industry group comes up with an awful anti-Title II video

CTIARedSpeaker SuperMobilityWeek

CTIA is the wireless industry’s lobbying arm with members including AT&T and Verizon. For years now, CTIA has been busy lobbying for wireless carriers to be exempt from any net neutrality rules.

In the past, CTIA has also pushed for carriers to have the ability to implement just about every anti-consumer action possible.

  • Which group has consistently resisted any change to the absurd cellphone unlocking laws? CTIA. In fact, when the FCC asked the CTIA to comply with voluntary guidelines with cellphone unlocking, the biggest issue was CTIA’s insistence on consumers NOT be automatically informed when their device is able to be unlocked.
  • When carriers were interested in blocking GPS radio access so that consumers would be forced to use the carrier GPS apps, CTIA pushed for it.
  • When carriers wanted all tethering to be blocked so that consumers would be forced to pay more per month, CTIA pushed for it.
  • For years, CTIA has continued claiming that the wireless industry is in trouble unless their members continue receiving special treatment during spectrum auctions.

So, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at CTIA now pushing back against recent Title II talk. But how would CTIA respond to recent events? With their own ridiculously terrible video.

When you get through the terrible acting, you can see that CTIA is pushing the same debunked garbage that they have been pushing for years now. Going back to 2012, CTIA has supported plans by its members to force destination services, such as Google or Netflix, to pay for access to their customers.

Game of Thrones Episode 2 arrives to Android

Last week we learned that Games of Thrones Episode 2 was coming to Android on February 5th. As scheduled, “The Lost Lords” has arrived as an in-app purchase for the Game of Thrones app, priced at $4.99.

For those that didn’t play the original, the game is based on the HBO series of the same name (and the books by George R. R. Martin, of course) and let’s you make decisions in the role of House Forrester and House Stark. Like with other Telltale series, you control various characters and the action is of the “choose your own adventure” type.

As for the story? Following the first episode, House Forrester is in shambles and you are working to keep your family from completely crumbling. Here’s the full description, from TellTale:

House Forrester is in disarray. Their liege lord and his heir are dead, and Ironrath is occupied by Whitehill soldiers. The survival of the family depends upon those who are left. Placed at King’s Landing, the epicenter of intrigue, Mira Forrester must weigh her loyalty to Margaery Tyrell against the needs of her family, while choosing how to play the political games of Tyrion Lannister. One misstep could spell doom for Mira and her entire family. To the far north, Gared Tuttle finds that the wall and its crows hold little love for a squire from the Wolfswood, but finds kinship in the bastard son of Ned Stark. Gared must prove worthy of becoming a ranger in order to carry out the mission given him; one that is vital to the future of those he serves. To the east, Asher Forrester, the exiled son, is called back to Westeros to aid his family, but how can one man help when the Boltons rule the north with an iron fist? Meanwhile, an unexpected source of hope returns to the Forresters, but Ironrath is no place for the weak.

While a device that’s a year old or newer will likely provide the best experience for the game, the minimum requirement to play is a handset or tablet with Android 2.3.3 and mid-range specs. If you haven’t downloaded the Game of Throne app, you can find it on Google Play.
