Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) and Note 3 LTE (SM-N9005) receive Lollipop 5.0.1

There’s more news about Samsung’s Android Lollipop updates today – both the Snapdragon powered Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) and the Galaxy Note 3 LTE model (SM-N9005) are seeing Android 5.0 updates rollout right now.
The Snapdragon Galaxy Note 4 update has so far been spotted in Germany and is currently available via Samsung Kies, although an OTA update should be on its way soon as well. The Galaxy Note 3 LTE update has been spotted in a number of countries in Europe.
Earlier this week, Samsung began rolling out its Android Lollipop update for the Exynos SoC powered Galaxy Note 4, while the standard Galaxy Note 3 saw Lollipop appear a couple of weeks ago. So far, it seem that Samsung has been better than many expected at pushing out updates to a number of smartphones, and also seems set to bring Lollipop to the older Galaxy Note 2 as well.
If you haven’t received an update notification yet, you can always force a check via Settings > About Phone > Software Update. SamMobile also has the firmware available to download for both handsets, if you’re the adventurous type who hates waiting for regional rollouts. Just type your model number into the search bar to find the latest update.

Google Helpouts to shut down April 20th

Google is saying goodbye to their Helpouts service on April 20th, 2015. For those who use the service, you’ll be able to download your Helpouts history by using Google Takeout, a data backup service that will be available until November 1st, 2015.
Helpouts was a service that launched back in 2013 that aimed to get people the help they needed through qualified experts. People that have sufficient knowledge on a certain topic would record tutorial videos, available for the whole world to see. If you wanted to learn about a specific topic, you could pay the person giving the tutorial at a set price for a certain amount of time.
So, why is it shutting down? Google sent out an email to Helpouts users explaining that not enough people were using the service. Here’s the full email explaining their reasoning:

Until April 20th, you can still use Helpouts. Until then, Google isn’t encouraging any new listings, and the company won’t accept any new help contributors.
Though this is a unique idea, it’s not really a surprise that Google is shutting down the service. After running into monetization problems and neglecting to add almost any new features or fixes to the service, I think we could all see the demise of Helpouts coming a mile away. Are you a Helpouts user? Does this affect you at all? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Google and Mattel are bringing VR to the View-Master

The View-Master was one of the coolest toys back in the day. Small cardboard reels would be placed in the device, giving a 3D look to the images. Essentially, this was the first taste of virtual reality most people experienced. But today, the View-Master is getting an awesome update. Google and Mattel have partnered up to release a View-Master powered by your smartphone.
Here’s how it works: the device is powered by your smartphone, and uses Google’s Cardboard technology. Instead of inserting cardboard reels into the device, Mattel has created new “experience reels” that you hold up to the headset. This will allow you to experience 3D worlds, educational “field trips” and photospheres. You can also view historical footage, photos and behind-the-scenes video that can be accessed by clicking on icons hovering around people, objects and landmarks. To make it work, you’ll need to download a custom Mattel application that will allow you to view the “experience reels” in a virtual reality setting. Additionally, the device will be able to work with any Cardboard-compatible app if you’d like to experience VR without the reels. Take a look at the video below to see exactly how it works.
The new View-Master will be available beginning this Fall for $29.99. Additional packs of four experience reels will be available for $14.99.
Galaxy Note 4 Volume/Interruptions setup on Lollipop offers worst of both worlds
Just let me mute my phone
The Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the global Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910F) dropped in parts of Europe today, opening the doors for Note 4 owners in these parts to get a taste of Google’s latest Android version. Much like Lollipop on the Galaxy S5, the Note 4’s Android 5.0 update brings a splash of Material Design, new features and improved performance to Samsung’s pen-toting 5.7-incher.
But it’s not all good news …
AT&T introduces new “truly shareable” 7GB Mobile Share Value Plan with rollover data
America’s second largest carrier, AT&T has just announced a new 7GB tier on its Mobile Share Value plan for $75 with rollover data. The plan will be officially available for customers starting Sunday, the 15th of February.
Besides paying $75 for the data, customers can add new additional lines for $15 per month (via AT&T Next). So if you add four new lines along with this data plan, you will have to spend a total of $135 per month.
Bear in mind that these prices do not include the monthly rentals that you have on the device, which will have to be paid separately. Fortunately, Mobile Share Value plans come with unlimited voice and texts, so you won’t have to pay extra for those benefits.
This new tier will be ideal for those who are not looking to spend more than $100 (10GB) on the Mobile Share Value plan.

White House Announces Apple Pay Support for Federal Payment Cards [iOS Blog]
Just ahead of Tim Cook’s speech at today’s Cybersecurity Summit, The White House has announced federal-payment cards are gaining Apple Pay support, reports Bloomberg. People who receive veterans and Social Security benefits from the government via debit card will now be able to use those cards with Apple Pay.
The deal includes the Direct Express payment network and government cards issued through GSA SmartPay, which handles more than 87.4 million transaction worth $26.4 billion each year, according to the General Services Administration.
Apple Pay has been lauded by banks and other payment industry executives for its security, and its acceptance by the federal government is a valuable endorsement for the service.
Apple Pay is seen as a highly secure solution due to its use of tokenization, which generates a unique code for each transaction to prevent actual credit card numbers from being shared. It also protects all consumer data like name and address, and it further ensures secure payments through fingerprint verification with Touch ID.
Currently, Apple Pay is only available in the United States, but it is set to expand internationally in the coming months. Apple Pay for China is expected in the near future, through a partnership with China’s UnionPay.

Apple Pay will soon support for federal payment cards
Apple Pay has been expanding steadily since its launch last fall, but now it also has the support of the federal government. Speaking at the White House Cyber Security Summit today, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple Pay will support federal payment cards later this year, including social security and those used by veterans. Cook also hinted that federal transactions — like paying for tickets and gift shop items at national parks — will also work with the platform. By making the announcement today, he’s also making it clear that the government is pretty confident about Apple Pay’s security capabilities. Unlike traditional credit card transactions, Apple’s platform never reveals your full card number to merchants, and it also doesn’t keep records of your purchases. “We can imagine a day in the not too distance future where your wallet becomes a remnant of the pass,” Cook said. “Your passport, your driver license, and other important documents can be digitally stored in a way thats safe, secure, and easy to access.”
