Microsoft’s Windows Insider program has been pretty successful thus far, but according to a new report only a small percentage of those signed up are currently using the Windows 10 preview for phones. According to Neowin, these figures come with another significant bump in the total number of Insiders.

What Richard’s taking to Mobile World Congress

It’s that time again. The time to say goodbye to families, pack a couple of bags and hit the dusty trail for another major show. This time out it’s Mobile World Congress, the annual gathering of the world’s biggest and best that the mobile industry has to offer. For me, MWC is what I’d class as a home event after CES, with Barcelona a mere 2 hours away by plane.

The event may be closer, but to cover it properly for Windows Central and Mobile Nations as a whole I still need to take a fair amount of gear. So here’s what I’ll be packing for this years MWC.

BlackBerry App Roundup for February 28, 2015

A weekly look at new, exciting, and cool apps to try

Howdy CrackBerry nation! Another week has come to a close and that can only mean one thing. However, before we get on with that let us just reflect a moment on all that has happened with BlackBerry since our last time. First, and most important, is that Verizon Wireless began their online sales of the BlackBerry Classic, though retails stores won’t be carrying it until March 5th. From what I see on their website it is available in two variants: one with a camera and one without. Next we saw a new version of BBM beta roll out with the option to create a custom PIN, remove ads and have a special badge on their profile picture in BBM. Finally, we have a fun little contest going on whereby you can get your hands on some cool BlackBerry goodies. I don’t know about you but free stuff is always a good thing especially with a nice BlackBerry logo on it. Be sure to head on over to the page, read the instructions carefully, and leave your comment to enter.

Now on to the more important topic of the day. It is time to bring you this week’s picks for all your passionate BlackBerry addicts out there. You can find each app and game I’ve rustled up for you by clicking through the gallery below. If your favorite did not make the cut this week, remember you can help by offering your suggestions at the end.

Sprint launches a Best Buy exclusive plan

02bestbuy.jpg

Sprint and Best Buy have teamed up to offer customers an exclusive plan that includes unlimited talk, text, data and your choice of any phone that Sprint offers. Here’s a detailed list of Sprints new “Best Buy One Plan”:

  • Well-qualified customers can walk out of a Best Buy store with no money down and no sales tax at the time of purchase, and the option to:

    • Lease an iPhone 6 16GB including unlimited talk, text and data while on the Sprint network, at $65 per month (excluding taxes and fees) for two years
    • Lease Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S®5 or LG G3 including unlimited talk, text and data while on the Sprint network, starting at $75 per month (excluding taxes and fees) for two years
  • Additional devices are also available for lease and pricing may vary

  • For an additional $10 per month, customers can choose the 12 month lease option and have the ability to upgrade every year

  • Customers activating a new line of service before March 28 will also receive a $200 Best Buy gift card

Needless to say, good credit is required in order to walk away with this plan and phone without paying a dime. Also keep in mind that the device will only be a lease, rather than owning it.

Does this look like a plan any of you would consider?

Chinese internet giants purge 60,000 accounts for inappropriate usernames

China will enforce an even tighter control over online names starting on March 1st, and it’s already begun nuking any account that doesn’t conform to its standards. A handful of powerful internet companies in the country have deleted over 60,000 accounts they believe are in violation of China’s new real-name/username policy. The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said in a statement that these accounts have either harmful usernames (such as “Come Shoot Guns”) or ones that mislead people into thinking that they’re dealing with media or the government (like “Buy License Plates”).

According to The Wall Street Journal, the group of companies that did this round of purging include e-commerce website Alibaba, tech giant Tencent, Chinese Google Baidu and social media platform Weibo. Baidu reportedly nuked 23,000 accounts for having vulgar usernames or using sexually explicit avatars, while Weibo removed 5,500 accounts for promoting terrorism and the views of the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. Tencent also deleted instant messaging and social media accounts that deal with gambling, firearms and issue fake invoices and food safety info. It’s not clear how many accounts Alibaba canceled, but the company formed a team to monitor the usernames on its websites and platforms.

The CAC didn’t mention if some accounts were removed because they didn’t have the users’ real names. But if you recall, websites will also start requiring people to input their legal names and legit info when the new rules take effect on March 1st — something that “chills” Chinese blogging pioneer Isaac Mao. “In the long run,” he told the WSJ, “freedom of speech and freedom of innovation will be dramatically harmed.”

Five 2 in 1 laptops to keep on your radar

2 in 1 laptops bring together all of the utility of a full-blown computer with the portability of a tablet, and we’re showing off some of our favorites.

It can be tricky figuring out what kind of computer you need, but the latest generation of hybrid computers offer a ton of flexibility. In some cases, our picks are little more than laptops with a reversible hinge, while others are more tablets with ample keyboard covers, but whatever the case, these computers can handle daily tasks like a champ, no matter your circumstances.
