Apple explores how iPad is making student films easier and better

Apple has released another video in their ongoing creative series — “Make a film with iPad”. It features student directors from the Los Angeles County High School, including Juliet Chin, Miu Jun, and Chester Milton, as well as excerpts from Martin Scorsese’s commencement speech to the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Class of 2014.

“Every scene is a lesson. Every shot is a school. Let the learning continue.” — Martin Scorsese

iPad is the ultimate tool for independent filmmakers. Learn how the students of Los Angeles County High School for the Arts relied on iPad to create films in a matter of days.

Some of the apps and accessories in the video include:

Apple also has an extended list of apps for film making on the App Store:

As much as some people insist on making fun of the iPad as photography and video tool, the large view finder makes it excellent for pro-consumer use. The 8mp iSight camera on the iPad Air 2 makes it technically excellent as well.

Hopefully this inspires more students, and more people, to pick up and iPad and make something great.

This travel-sized quick charger hides the pointy parts, keeps the bulk

Our chief complaint about quick chargers is that they’re not small. In fact, they’re big. Travel chargers should be smaller, right?

So if you’re going throw a quick charger in your gear bag, you’re either going to have to choose carefully (and that’s assuming you’ve got more than one brand on you, and most folks won’t), or you’re going to want to possibly consider a travel charger.

We’ve picked up one from Qmadix — which is on Qualcomm’s official list of quick-charge accessories — and are taking it for a spin.

Poll results: Did you install the Windows 10 preview on your phone?

Having polled the Windows Central community on whether or not they’d installed the Windows 10 Technical Preview on their phones, the response was strong and the results not completely surprising. While excitement is clearly high, it seems that there are more who simply can’t get it right now than can or are using it.

Toyota Currently Has No Plans to Support CarPlay or Android Auto in U.S.

carplay_touchWhile Toyota has long been listed as one of Apple’s CarPlay partners, the third best-selling auto brand in the U.S. currently has no plans to offer vehicles with the feature in that country, as noted in a New York Times overview of the race between Google and Apple to own the dashboard. Toyota also has no plans to offer Android Auto support in the U.S.

John Hanson, the national manager of Toyota’s advanced technology communications, said while the company talked frequently with both Google and Apple, it currently had no plans to adopt Android Auto or CarPlay in the United States.

“We may all eventually wind up there, but right now we prefer to use our in-house proprietary platforms for those kinds of functions,” Mr. Hanson said.

While Toyota is ruling out the U.S. market for CarPlay support for the time being, the company has not made any firm announcement about support in other countries. Shortly after Apple’s CarPlay announcement, Toyota’s UK division briefly posted a blog entry claiming CarPlay would be coming in 2015, but the company quickly backtracked on the claim.

Today’s report from The New York Times focuses more on Android Auto than on CarPlay, likely due in large part to Apple refusal to comment for the piece. Still, it offers a glimpse of the struggles auto manufacturers have had developing in-car systems and their reluctance to turn that experience over to Apple and Google.

With consumer preference driving the market, however, many manufacturers now see little choice but to support both CarPlay and Android Auto. Vehicles supporting both systems are expected to be hitting showrooms in the near future, with Hyundai likely one of the first out of the gate.

Leaked images purported to be Huawei Ascend P8

huawei_ascend_p8_leak_01

Although the rumor mill lately seems to be dominated by leaks of Samsung and HTC devices, other manufacturers have devices in the works. Huawei is likely working on the next model in their Ascend line, the Huawei Ascend P8. Some new images making the rounds purport to be of the Ascend P8, although whatever the device is it has been concealed some by a case.

What can be made out includes a center position USB slot in the bottom edge surrounded by speaker grills to both sides, a top-mounted headphone jack, and a front-facing camera that appears to come with an optical image stabilizer sensor.

Along with the images of the actual device there are some screenshots of Antutu scores that would confirm some of the hardware. We can see the device is equipped with an octa-core cpu which some sources believe will be Huawei’s own, internally produced Kirin 930 64-bit chip. The test device also has 3 GB of RAM, a 13 MP main camera, and is running a 1920 x 1080 resolution. All of this will be running Android Lollipop.

The scores indicate the device should be able to hold its own against most current flagship devices. Reports indicate Huawei may hold off on announcing the Ascend P8 until the middle of April instead of at MWC 2015.

Weekly poll results: do you have a quick-charging phone?

Quick charging is indeed something a fair number of us have.

This week’s poll may seem a bit simpler than most, and the same holds true for its results, which show that a majority of the responding users — what 4,500 of you responded this week — said that you did have a quick-charging phone. This comes as a small surprise to us, as relatively few phones in the last few months have come with it, however, many of the phones packing it are quite popular devices like the 2014 Motorola Moto X and the HTC One M8. Quick-charging has especially been promoted on phones with larger batteries like the Motorola Droid Turbo and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The Big Picture: The frozen US as seen from space

A view of the frozen US from NASA's Terra satellite

Wondering why February has been so mind-numbingly cold? Here’s why. NASA’s Terra research satellite took a snapshot on February 19th showing that much of the US has been draped in Arctic and Siberian air masses, painting the country white with snow. Even southern cities like Macon, Georgia dipped well below freezing, according to weather reports. While those conditions are (thankfully) going away, they made for a spectacular view from space — not that you’ll likely want to see it again.

Next time you are on the road and in need of gas, cue Google Now for assistance. Select users are beginning to see recommendations for gas stations that lie on their same routes. Google offers results based on driving speed and location. Gas stations are represented by red circles with white gas pumps. The card appears only when driving or navigating rather than being present when not in a vehicle.
