Inbox now available for tablets, will soon be available for Google Apps customers

New_Features_to_Inbox_Pic1Good news for those of you that like Google’s Gmail alternative: Sundar Pichai has announced that Inbox is officially available on Android tablets and iPads, and it’s slated for release for Google Apps customers very shortly. Plus, it’s up and running on Firefox and Safari, if you prefer to do things from a full web browser but don’t want to stick to Chrome. This means you’ll be able to tackle your cluttered Gmail inbox from nearly any device you own.

No word on how soon that Google Apps integration is coming, but Pichai’s tweet said “imminently,” so it shouldn’t be much longer.

Samsung’s Galaxy S 6 will use a 16 megapixel camera with Sony IMX240 sensor

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_4_Back_Camera_Lens_Heart_Rate_Monitor_Closeup_TAWhile we wait for Samsung to make their 2015 flagship official on March 1st, we can still snoop around to try to figure out what’s going to be inside the Galaxy S 6 ahead of time. Originally, rumors pointed at the device using a 20 megapixel camera, but now it’s looking like Samsung will go with a 16 megapixel Sony IMX240 sensor.

This is actually the same sensor that Samsung used in the Galaxy Note 4, but they’ve reportedly tweaked a few things for better performance. The Note 4 takes fantastic pictures, so any improvement on that will be great news for photo-enthusiasts.

Samsung Galaxy S6: The Android Central wishlist

What do we want to see from Samsung’s next big thing?

The launch of a new Samsung flagship is one of the big events in the Android calendar, accompanied by an unprecedented quantity of speculation, rumors and even the occasional leak. Though Samsung’s position in the smartphone market isn’t quite as dominant as it was 12 months ago, the Korean giant remains a force to be reckoned with. And its products are still the lens through which a huge number of consumers experience Android.

Last year saw Samsung release the plastic, waterproof Galaxy S5, before changing course and going metal in later months with the Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4. So with that in mind, it’s time to consider what we want from the next Galaxy phone, the Galaxy S6, expected to launch ahead of Mobile World Congress on March 1.

Rovio is once again celebrating the Chinese New Year with a variety of new additions to several of their game titles. Just in China, Angry Birds has seen close to a half billion downloads, so it should be no surprise that Rovio wants to join in celebrating the Year of the Goat. According to Rovio’s SVP and COO of Games, David Byrne,

Rovio has been a great fan of Chinese New Year since 2012 when we developed a Year of the Dragon update for Angry Birds Seasons. We enjoy seeing fans around the world partake of a unique celebration that has its origins in China.”

Some of the titles impacted by the goat include Angry Birds GO! which gets a new Goat Kart and Angry Birds Epic in which players can enjoy a special player vs player Chinese Year event. From February 17 – 28, Rovio’s Plunder Pirates game is getting some Chinese Pirate ships and legendary pirate “Ching Shih” is present as well. Meanwhile, Angry Birds Stella has a new Chinese New Year themed level that users can enjoy. Rovio also says their new game Jolly Jam pays homage to the Year of the Goat.

Apple to Launch Public Beta Testing Programs for iOS 8.3 and iOS 9

ipad_iphone_ios_8Following up on the public beta program used for OS X Yosemite that allowed non-developers to try out and offer feedback on the operating system before its release, Apple will be launching similar programs for iOS 8.3 next month and iOS 9 later this year, reports 9to5Mac.

…Apple intends to release the upcoming iOS 8.3 as a public beta via the company’s existing AppleSeed program in mid-March, according to the sources. This release will match the third iOS 8.3 beta for developers, which is planned for release the same week. Apple then expects to debut iOS 9 at its June Worldwide Developer Conference, with a public beta release during the summer, and final release in the fall.

iOS 8.2 is still in developer testing as Apple gears up for an April launch of the Apple Watch, but the company has also begun seeding iOS 8.3 to developers. The update includes a number of tweaks including support for wireless CarPlay, two-step verification on Google accounts, a new emoji picker, and Apple Pay through China UnionPay.

After a dramatic visual overhaul with iOS 7 in 2013 and a number of new features such as Continuity in iOS 8 last year, iOS 9 will reportedly focus on stability and optimization, although some new features are likely to be included.

Equil Smartpen, 47% off

So many things in today’s world are made significantly better by constantly evolving technology. Why scrub dishes in scummy water when your dishwasher can do a more effective job? Why spend hours shoveling when your snow-blower will make short work of it? Technology can make us more powerful and efficient but what about the intangibles? Have you ever jotted your signature on a touch pad and had it look more legible than if you would have actually taken pen to paper? I mean, looking at my digital chicken scratch is almost a comedy bit when I sign for things at grocery store. While I’m certainly no Luddite, I do think some tasks still benefit from a tactile touch. Enter the Equil Digital & Ink Smartpen.

The Equil Smartpen takes your written work and seamlessly creates a carbon copy for management in your digital word. No need to scan your pages or use an expensive pressure-sensitive tablet; Equil works with any type of paper. You can write notes, drawings, and sketches by hand and they’ll be automatically securely stored. Equil is lightweight and easily transported thanks to its compact design and can even be programmed to recognize commands based on your gestures. JDI announces a new low-power smartwatch display

jdi smartwatch display

Japan Display, a leading LCD development company co-owned by of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, has just announced a new LCD panel designed specifically for the smartwatch market. In particular, the panel aims to limit the display’s impact on the battery life of compact wearable products.

The display has a resolution of 320 x 300 and a diameter of 1.34-inches (3.4 cm). JDI boasts that the display requires less than 0.5 percent of the power typically consumed by a smartphone or smartwatch LCD display. That’s certainly an impressive energy saving, which appears to be accomplished by moving over to a reflective LCD technology.

Rather than typical transflective LCDs, reflective designs do not require a back-light, which is responsible for most of a LCD display’s energy consumption. Instead, it relies on ambient light and should provide excellent colors in bright conditions, even outdoors. However, this type of display performs poorly in low light conditions. JDI’s technology seems similar to Qualcomm’s Mirasol display seen in the Toq smartwatch.

The first samples of JDI’s new display will be made available in March, with mass production scheduled to begin in July. Products featuring this new display could arrive on the market sometime in late 2015.

The top 10 wearables you can buy right now

This year’s CES was awash in wearables and while many of them took the form of wrist-worn fitness trackers and smartwatches, the genre has expanded beyond the basics. While some iOS users may be holding out for the Apple Watch in April, there’s still a great selection of cross-platform devices available right now. Withings’ Activité Pop has classic analog style while still tracking steps and calories burned, all with the help of an eight-month battery. LG’s G Watch R is a decent Android Wear option that offers a truly circular display, while the Moto 360 still cuts a striking figure — although neither can manage more than a single day on a charge. The Basis Peak is also a contender, with reliable sleep and fitness tracking in a water-resistant package. As for wearable cameras, GoPro remains the go-to brand in the genre and its latest series of Hero4 cams don’t disappoint. You can find our full list of picks in the buyer’s guide, but we’ve also listed them in the gallery below. Who knows? Maybe skimming through will help you burn a calorie or two.
