Pandora launches Artist Audio Messaging, Lenny Kravitz among the pilot users

pandora_messages_from_artists

Forget about receiving a tweet from your favorite artists because some of them will soon be sending messages over Pandora. The service announced on Thursday a new feature called Artist Audio Messaging which allows artists to send personalized messages to listeners around the world. Pandora notes that the possible messages shared with listeners, aside from random voice recordings, are tour announcements, new album releases, and crowd-funding campaigns.

For the initial pilot, Pandora has selected a small group of artists. Artist Audio Messaging will then expand to a wider amount of artists once Pandora understands exactly how everything is working for both artists and listeners. Among the pilot users is four-time Grammy Award winner Lenny Kravitz. Earlier today, Kravitz sent listeners an introduction a song of his.

Pandora believes that Artist Audio Messaging will bring together its 80 million users and the artists providing content.

Sony may exit the smartphone and television market to increase profits

Sony_Xperia_Z3v_Front_Lower_Sony_Logo_TASony makes some very nice equipment, especially when it comes to smartphones, and I don’t think there are many people that will argue against that. However, the company has struggled to gain much market share and turn a profit in the wireless industry, partly because of intense competition on both the high and low end, and partly because of their inability to make any headway in the lucrative US market.

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai talked about how Sony plans to get back to profitability by the end of the 2018, and those plans include leveraging Sony’s Playstation business, as well as their camera component sales and access to media like TV shows, movies, and music. However, two of Sony’s current major divisions, televisions and smartphones, are absent from that plan.

Hirai didn’t explicitly say it’s part of the company’s long term plan, but he hasn’t ruled out getting out of the mobile and TV market. Both of those industries are extremely competitive, and even when a company does manage to grab up some market share it can be tough to turn that into profit. Sony has struggled with both of those markets lately, and we’ve already seen them spin off their PC division to cut their losses, so it’s very possible that the mobile and TV sections get the same treatment.

Ultimately, Sony plans to increase it profits to about $4 billion by the end of 2018, and Hirai believes they’re on track to do that with or without those two divisions. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out, but I’d be pretty disappointed to see them leave the mobile industry altogether. There’s always a chance that they sell the division off to a third party, similar to what happened with VAIO, but it’s too early to make any guesses at this point.

Sievert has until now served as the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, and in his new role will be responsible for a number of consumer-facing initiatives, according to TmoNews:

In the memo to staff – which we’ve been able to look at (thanks to our sources) – Legere states that he has created the position for Sievert. His responsibilities will include guiding all customer facing operations across the business, in a role which sees him responsible for marketing, sales and customer care for all distribution channels both direct and indirect, for each of the company’s brands.

Sievert will be replaced in the CMO position by Andrew Sherrard. Other changes to the executive team include the promotion of Ami Silverman to Executive Vice President of retail, and the installation of former MetroPCS business unit COO Tom Keys in the new position of President – T-Mobile Indirect Channels. Keys will handle partnerships with all T-Mobile and MetroPCS dealers.

Google Voice users having problems sending MMS messages

Google-Voice-LargeGoogle just recently enabled MMS support for North American Google Voice users, but it looks like the service is already seeing its first hiccup. Many users are reporting being unable to send any MMS messages, and Google has acknowledged that its a problem on the official support site. Fortunately, SMS messages seem like they’re okay, so if you’re solely using a GV number, you’re not totally up the creek until this gets fixed.

Hopefully Google will get the problem sorted out sooner rather than later, but if you want to keep up with the progress, you can find the thread below.

Get This Look: ZeldaHD Bootanimation

Bootanimations have always been a particular favorite of mine. I used to make my own bootanimations just for that added level of customization, but now I just let other designers make the bootanimations for me.

One great bootanimation that is raising in fame is the ZeldaHD Bootanimation from Bhoot.

This animation features various items from the ever popular Zelda games. You need a rooted device to apply the bootanimation, but it is a gorgeous animation either way.

You can download it from here as well as find install instructions.
