HTC anticipates the arrival of Lollipop update for the Verizon One M8 in early March

HTC-Logo-3

Just a few weeks ago, HTC announced that the update to Lollipop wouldn’t make its way to most One M7 and M8 owners within the company’s 90-day guarantee. Even though HTC had good reason to delay the update, this still discouraged many users hoping to try out the latest and greatest software in a timely fashion. But that didn’t stop the company from rolling out the Lollipop update to multiple M8 handsets only days after that announcement. We’ve seen the T-Mobile, Unlocked, Developer Edition, GPe and certain European variants get the update, and now it will soon be Verizon’s turn.

Mo Versi, HTC‘s Product Manager, took to Twitter to respond to a user’s inquiry on the Verizon HTC One M8 Lollipop update. In response, Versi told the user that the Verizon M8 Lollipop update is “in the lab,” and that the company is expecting approval for the update in the first week of March. We don’t have an exact date as to when the update will roll out, but at least now we have a pretty reliable timeframe.

Verizon may not be the quickest carrier with software updates, and HTC may have missed their 90-day guarantee, but now we know the company is working hard on the update. If you have a Verizon HTC One M8, you may want to start checking for a software update in the coming weeks. Head to Settings>Software update>Check new.

Amazon Prime Now service opens up to all of Manhattan

When Amazon announced Amazon Prime Now I was all excited. Just the thought of ordering something and getting in an hour, or two, later without laving to get it was awesome. It won’t do me any good in Oregon in a population of 55,000, but hey, I was happy for for the elite who could […]

AT&T’s prepaid GoPhone service now gives you much more data

AT&T store

AT&T is clearly bent on turning its ho-hum GoPhone prepaid service into more of a well-oiled machine. Just a couple of months after the carrier tweaked GoPhone pricing, it’s upping the amount of full-speed data you get with two of its plans. The $45 tier is jumping from 1GB per month to a decidedly healthier 2.5GB; if you were paying $60 for 2.5GB before, you now get 4GB. The higher-end plan now has unlimited calling and texting to Mexico, too. The move was arguably necessary between higher data ceilings at Cricket (AT&T’s other contract-free offering) and stiffer competition from T-Mobile, but it’s hard to object to getting a lot more for the money.

Kairoskopion weather app review

I just spent a few days with a new weather app called Kairoskopion.  I know, there are a ton of weather apps in the Play store, why should you try a new one?  Well, the new Kairoskopion weather app by Salad Dressing Industries is worth a look.  The people at Salad Dressing Industries have created something simple, but special with this app.  If you are looking for a new weather app read on to see if this is the one for you.

SDI

The first thing you notice about the Kairoskopion weather app is the gorgeous material design.  It fits in perfectly with the new design language that Google is rolling out.  The colors are bright and vivid, they really pop on screen.  The next thing you notice is how simple the app is.  Once you start the app, it finds your location, then displays the temperature along with a picture that depicts the weather: a sun, raindrop, clouds, etc.  The option menu can be found by clicking on the little gear in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  There is only one option, the ability to change from celsius to fahrenheit.  The app makes it very clear how Salad Dressing Industries feels about fahrenheit.  It’s worth downloading the app just to see what happens when you change from celsius to fahrenheit.

Temp

There is also the option to check out the weekly forecast by touching the Kairoskopion Weekly bar.  Once your into the weekly forecast, you again notice the design.  It’s gorgeous and simple to use at the same time.  All the forecast information you need for the next five days is laid out in an easy to understand format.  The only thing I haven’t figured out are the seemingly random set of four icons that appear at the bottom of the page.  I don’t know if they have some meaning or if they are there simply to provoke thought.

SDI2

I have to admit that I love this weather app.  It offers the perfect amount of information for me.  I don’t need a weather radar on my phone, just tell me the temperature and weather conditions.  Some people might need more information in their weather app, but I would bet that most don’t.  This is a weather app for the masses.  It simply works, looks good and brings a healthy sense of humor to the table.  If you decide to try the Kairoskopion weather app, make sure to read the description in the Google Play store, it’s worth the trip all on it’s own.

Here’s a neat trick which lets you capture 50MP photos from your OnePlus One

OnePlus_One_87559

The OnePlus One is a pretty stellar device for the cost that it’s available for. And a new camera mod lets users get even more out of the device with minimal work. Thanks to a bunch of keen developers over at the XDA Forums, the OnePlus One can now take 50-megapixel photos using image interpolation tech.

This was debuted in the Oppo Find 7 and Find 7a, so it’s a feature from Oppo’s proprietary Color OS ROM. These developers have simply ported the app to work with CyanogenMod 11S, thus making it compatible with the OnePlus One.

In addition to offering 50-megapixel photos, the camera app also comes with features like HDR video recording, slow-mo video, burst shot and a lot more. So if you own a OnePlus One and would like to get more out of your smartphone’s camera, head over to the link below for more details.

Welcome back to our Meet the Devs segment! In this piece we take a little time to get to know the people who really make Android what it is today and that is the app developers. In this week’s developer interview, we are talking to Shashwat Pradhan of Emberify.

About your company?

Emberify is a startup working on consumer based analytic and utility apps. Using contextual information, Emberify aims to create a more relevant mobile experience for their users.

Emberify developer interview

What level of experience do you have with coding and development?

I have been developing apps for three years now. Started of with Android, also developed apps for iOS, BlackBerry 10, Windows Phone.

What languages do you know? How and where did you learn them?

C, C++, some Java, Objective-C. I learnt most of them myself. Learnt C++ in college during my Computer Engineering course.

What level of experience do you have with design?

Have been learning design at session worldwide at BlackBerry Live, Apple’s WWDC & the Material Design Website is the ultimate place. We just launched a Material Design app Instant which we are very proud of.

What apps have you made?

We have made multiple apps. For android we worked on developing the Dash Radio app. Our own product Instant was recently launched. We also have some BlackBerry and iOS apps.

How do you monetize your apps?

Mostly they are paid to give users a smooth transaction experience and a good user experience.
Emberify developer interview

Do you consider yourself successful?

I’m not sure how to answer this one — I don’t really have a measurement parameter for this. But yes, I am glad that our apps at Emberify help people in various fields to be productive and impact their lives in some way. Instant definitely has helped people keep a check on their device usage which we get great feedback for.

How difficult is it to make money as a developer?

With crowded app stores, I admit it isn’t easy. But with an innovative use case apps can definitely make money.

What can Android do to improve?

Android needs to reduce fragmentation in all ways. Even the code between Eclipse and Android Studio has documentation scarcity.

Why did you choose Android? Do you develop for other platforms? What are the differences between them?

Android is the most popular OS, especially in India. Yes we develop for BlackBerry and iOS as well. There are more users on Android but apps are expected to be free on this platform. Also there is lots of fragmentation in Android devices but Android has the best APIs available for developers.
Emberify developer interview

What are your thoughts on iOS and Windows 8?

iOS is a great platform in terms of developer profitability and refined developer tools, that being said its very restricted in terms of APIs. Windows 8 again is very fragmented and the app store there isn’t very popular.

What do you think of the Android design guidelines?

The new Material Design guidelines are great, love the new visual language. One of my favourite design paradigms.

What are your favorite apps?

My favourite apps are:

What has been your experience been like working with Gooogle?

Its been great! I have some mentors and friends in Google. They are always very helpful with ideating and giving me great insights. Overall Google is a great company to work with.

What does the future of development look like?

It’s interesting to say the least. By the end of 2015 I can see wearables picking up acting as app extensions from mobile. Also by beginning 2016 I see IoTs growing and becoming more significant.

What tips do you have for aspiring developers?

Look at innovative and new app ideas and uses. Android has unlimited opportunities with so many APIs and so many new dimensions. Do reach out to me for any help or mentoring. I do work with mentoring some developers whenever I can. Also we do write about developer and technology trends on the Emberify Blog.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Some nice pictures I got at various Google HQs.

Windows 10 preview builds for phone are ‘roughly’ every month, Tile re-sizing options not definite

Nearly a week ago, Microsoft unleashed an early release of Windows 10 for phones through their Insider preview program. Considering that Windows 10 is far from finished, there are a lot more questions than answers at this time for consumers as to the endgame for Microsoft’s new OS.

Gabriel Aul, who has become the default spokesperson for the Windows Insider program, has taken to Twitter to respond to the myriad of inquiries from users. Here is a recap of some of the bits we have learned recently.
