Original Apple Watch Health Features Were Dropped Due to Consistency Issues
Before Apple unveiled the Apple Watch last September, reports indicated the device would come with 10 sensors to track health and fitness data, leading some healthcare professions to find the unveiled Apple Watch’s health features disappointing. In a new report, the Wall Street Journal offers a look at the original Apple Watch health features that were dropped due to consistency problems.

Apple began developing the watch about four years ago, with a focus on health and fitness. It’s not unusual for Apple to experiment with many technologies or shift focus during product development, but the watch was especially challenging, people familiar with the matter said. Internally, the project became known as a “black hole” sucking in resources, one of these people said.
The Apple Watch originally featured censors that measured the conductivity of skin, allowing the device to detect stress levels and heart-rate monitoring similar to an electrocardiogram, also known as an EKG. Apple also experimented with ways to detect blood pressure or how much oxygen is in a user’s blood. However, a mix of consistency problems and potential oversight caused Apple to switch the focus of the device from health-related to a more general do-everything product.
The skin conductivity features didn’t perform well with people who had hairy arms or dry skin, while results varied depending on how tight an Apple Watch was worn on users’ wrists. Additionally, if Apple decided to use the health date to provide “health or behavioral advice”, the Cupertino company would have to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other regulators.
While these features were dropped for the first version of the Apple Watch, sources tell WSJ that they could appear in future versions of the device, echoing a Reuters report from September.
Last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company’s objective with Apple Watch is to “change the way people live their lives” and that people would be surprised by the breadth of what the device can do, which includes activity monitoring, reminding users to stand up after a certain time period and non-verbal communication with friends. Apple is currently asking developers to have their Apple Watch apps ready by mid-February, with some developers traveling to Apple’s Cupertino headquarters for help.
Cook has confirmed the Apple Watch will launch in April. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple will make five to six million units for the first quarter, with half of those units being the entry Apple Watch Sport and one-third being the mid-tier stainless-steel Apple Watch.
Pebble updated to support Android Wear apps

It has been two months since the Pebble 2.3 beta arrived, bringing with it a massive change that allowed it to play nice with Android Wear apps. While the update still ran the same Pebble OS, it had been modified so that notifications from Android Wear apps would also work on the Pebble, making it easy to interact with these notifications and even reply from the Pebble using special defined responses. And now the new AW support features have arrived for the stable version of Pebble 2.3 as well.
Keep in mind that in order for the Pebble to work with Android Wear apps, you’ll not only need to grab the Pebble 2.3 app from Google Play — you’ll also need to install the latest firmware update. Wondering what else is new? Mostly bug fixes and a few other minor tweaks. For those on iOS, the Pebble update is pretty uninspiring, considering the AW compatibility obviously only applies to us in the Android camp.
For those looking for a full changelog, here you go:
- Android Wear Notifications. Reply and act on Android Wear notifications (requires Firmware v2.9+). See http://pbl.io/f for full details.
- Pebbler-defined replies. Set your own replies to notifications (up to five, so get creative, buddy!).
- Reply from Pebble using most Android-compatible SMS messaging apps.
- Automatic app and watchface updates when Pebble is idle.
- Support for Android 4.0+ devices.
- Fixed Issues with Whatsapp notifications.
- UTF-8 support in PebbleKit JS.
- Bug fixes and stability improvements.
The arrival of Android Wear app compatibility to the Pebble is a major boon for the platform, and instantly increases the number of apps that can be used with the watch on Android. Of course, some of these apps won’t be as useful as they would on an actual Android Wear watch due to the Pebble’s lack of a microphone for voice response, but this is still a great step in the right direction. With the Pebble priced at just $100 and with a battery life that substantially one ups actual Android Wear watches, the Pebble just got a little bit more interesting.
Mid-range version of the HTC One (M8) on the way
HTC might be just about to unveil the HTC One (M9) and possibly the One (M9) Plus in a couple of weeks, but they are also readying a variant of last year’s flagship. The HTC One M8i appears to be just like the One (M8) in terms of appearance and weight, but there will be some differences under the hood.
It sports the same 5-inch 1080p display, but the processor is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615, which includes 2 sets of Cortex-A53 quad cores (1.7 GHz and 1.0 GHz). It will also come with 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, microSD slot for expanded storage, Duo Camera at the back (13 MP and 2 MP), 5 MP front-facing camera, less than 3,000 mAh battery, BoomSound, and Android 5.0 with Sense 7.0.
The M8i will be available in Asia (including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia at least), China (OpenChannel, China Mobile, China Unicom), and Europe.
You will have your choice of either gray, gold, or silver for colors. No word on exactly when it will be available or the price, but it’s likely to be shown at Mobile World Congress next month.

How to get the most out of S Note on the Galaxy Note 4
Tips for taking notes, on your Note
S Note has been a thing on the Galaxy Note line for a while. Think of it as a full-blown notebook that you can write, type or even speak text into, then add snippets like a map, or a video or a picture to round it out. It’s powerful and has a bit of a learning curve to make the most of it.
We’ve been using it on the Galaxy Note 4 for a bit, and have found a few tips that will make things a little easier and make your notes not only look better, but have a wee bit more function as well. The app itself walks you through the basics when you first use it, so let’s go beyond those and make the most out of the S Note app on the Note 4.
BlackBerry Passport and Classic come to AT&T on February 20th
BlackBerry fans on AT&T, your long wait for a new phone is almost over — the carrier has announced that both the Passport and Classic will reach its stores on February 20th. As promised, AT&T’s ever-so-slightly customized (but still oddly shaped) Passport will cost you $200 on contract, $22 per month on Next 24 or $650 up front. If you’d like something a tad less squarish, the Classic will cost you $50 on contract, $14 per month on Next 24 or $420 outright. These BlackBerrys certainly aren’t the cheapest devices in AT&T’s roster, but they’re also the network’s only modern phones with hardware keyboards. If you still aren’t a fan of typing on glass, they’re your best bets.

Google adds Android Wear to the Device Art Generator
One of the tools that Google provides to developers is the Device Art Generator. With this tool, developers can get an idea of what their screens will look like on different Google hardware. For instance, a developer may want to get a feel for how their app will look when framed by the relatively large bevels of the Nexus 9 and its 4:3 ratio versus a Nexus 5. Google has now added Android Wear support to the tool.
To make use of the generator, developers need to grab either square or round screenshots and upload them to the online tool. They can then choose whether they want to see the screen framed by a round device or a square device. The resulting image can be saved for later viewing and sharing with others, although Google tells developers they should not use these shots when adding their app to Google Play.
