Android Authority this week

It was a very interesting week in the world of Android. OnePlus caused quite a stir when it announced it hired key Paranoid Android developers to help create Oxygen OS. A mystery Nvidia device was teased for next month. The long awaited Xposed framework update for Lollipop finally landed. We heard several credible reports about the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Sony introduced its low-cost Xperia E4. Lollipop updates hit more devices. Xiaomi introduced itself to the US and said it would open an accessories store later this year. And we heard rumors about Google’s plans with Android One and a new payment service.

A little PSA: by now I probably shouldn’t tell you that online security is important. This week Google launched a little promo where they give you 2GB of free Drive storage (you can’t ever have enough) for doing a little security checkup. Basically, take a look at all the security options that are available (2-step verification is particularly important) and make sure you have them set up properly. I personally did just that, not for the free storage, but because a lot in my life depends on the security of my Google account. Do yourself a favor this weekend and make sure your account is as secure as possible.
With Valentine behind us, you can almost smell spring in the air. For tech geeks, that means… new devices. We just reviewed the amazingly thin Dell Venue 8 7000, the G Flex 2 is in the house, and more great stuff is incoming. For a little teaser, Ash did an epic history of Nexus video – keep an eye out for it this Monday, and trust me, it’s going to be worth it.
If it’s Sunday, it’s a new giveaway! This week we are giving away a Nexus 9 Android tablet.

How would you change the original Moto X?
Today’s trawl into the annals of gadget history takes us to the first Moto X, a device that, at the time, we believed would be a turning point for Google and Android. After all, it was the first device Motorola had released since Google swallowed the firm, and came with some notable features. Between Moto Maker, the Active Display and those “always on” features, it felt as if other smartphone makers had all been placed on notice. By now, of course, we all know how that turned out. If you bought one, you’re likely to have plenty of opinions about it, so why not hop over to our forum and tell the world what you would have done differently?

LG goes for the ‘Urbane’ look with latest G Watch iteration
LG today has unveiled its latest Android Wear building on the original LG G Watch R and coming up with a more stylish and formal and all-metal “LG Watch Urbane” that’s “designed for a sophisticated and cosmopolitan wearer.” Available in gold or silver, it’s still a standard 22mm model, so you’ll be able to swap out straps if you like. LG’s slimmed down the bezel, as well as the overall size and thickness. The stainless steel handle also has improve protection against scratches and corrosion.
Spec-wise, you’re pretty much looking at the same as the original G Watch R, including a 1.3-inch, 320×320 Plastic OLED display, which is the best we’ve seen on a smartwatch thus far.
Microscopic gold tubes can both detect and destroy cancer cells
There’s no doubt that doctors would prefer to treat cancer as soon as they spot it, and it looks like nanotechnology might give them that chance. Researchers at the University of Leeds have successfully tested gold nanotubes that are useful for both imaging and destroying cancer cells. Since the tubes absorb near-infrared light frequencies, which both generate heat and render human skin transparent, you only need to zap them with lasers of varying brightness to achieve multiple ends. You can use a relatively low brightness to reveal tumors, while high brightness will heat the tubes enough to kill nearby tumorous cells. The shape also has room for drugs, so you can deliver medicine at the same time.
Scientists have only tried this approach in a mouse model of human cancer, so it’ll be a long while before the technique is ready for your local hospital. However, it might be worth the wait. Besides saving time, the gold nanotubes both enter and leave your body with minimal fuss; you aren’t as likely to grapple with side effects caused by methods like chemotherapy. If all goes well, you’d only need injections and laser blasts to deal with at least some life-threatening conditions.

Foursquare drops login requirement for use of the app
Foursquare is rolling out an update to their app that removes the requirement for new users to setup up an account or set customizations before they can start searching for places to visit and check out. The move is apparently being taken as a way to make it easier for new users to get recommendations and will then lead to those users wanting to create a new account and link social accounts.
Some of the groundwork to make this possible occurred last year when Foursquare split their app into two separate apps, Foursquare and Swarm. Previous to that change, Foursquare users would “check-in” to their favorite spots and could share them with friends. That meant an account was required for tracking purposes.
The new Foursquare was created to compete more directly with services like Yelp in providing recommendations. Since new users no longer have to create an account, they can immediately access the information stored in Foursquare’s databanks. Assuming the app is effective and entices users to continue using it, they can create an account at any time as well as link their social networks.
To check for the update or install Foursquare, hit the Google Play link below.

Mysterious Apple Van Captured on Video in Palo Alto Residential Neighborhood
A largely unmarked van with rooftop cameras, similar to the one originally spotted roaming Bay Area streets earlier this month, has been captured on video in Palo Alto, California. MacRumors obtained the footage from reader Jonathan Shiu, who recently recorded the van driving past Juana Briones Park on Clemo Avenue, a residential side street located approximately 10 miles from Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino.
It has been increasingly speculated that these fifth-generation Dodge Caravans, which are reportedly leased to Apple, are part of the company’s work on an electric car, but it is also possible that the vans are being used for a project similar to Google’s Street View. It is conceivable that the rooftop cameras are being used to either collect mapping data for Apple Maps or as sensors to assist with self-driving initiatives.
Earlier this week, the Financial Times reported that Apple is hiring automotive experts to work in a top-secret research lab located near the company’s headquarters. The Wall Street Journal soon followed up with a report claiming that Apple has hundreds of employees working on developing an electric vehicle, and Reuters added that the project will involve self-driving cars.
Apple is likely in the early stages of research and development for any electric car project, and it is fully possible that the iPhone maker scraps the initiative before it ever reaches the public. With both Google and Tesla already invested in electric and self-driving vehicles, it will be interesting to see if Apple enters the industry or remains on the sidelines in the months and years ahead.
