The Samsung Galaxy Tab S 2 will be thinner than the Apple iPad Air 2

Samsung_Galaxy_Tab_S_8.4_Back_Slanted_Camera_Samsung_Logo_TA

Samsung launched the Galaxy Tab S last summer, which was only 6.6 mm thick. A follow up will come at some point this year, and the word is it will be thinner than the iPad Air 2, which is only 6.1 mm thick.

The Tab S 2 will also sport a metal frame, which isn’t a surprise based on what we have been seeing from the Korean powerhouse.

Just like last year, Samsung will offer two different sizes, but it appears they will go with the 4:3 display ratio. Last year they offered both 8.4 and 10.5-inches, but this year’s dimensions will come in at 8.0 and 9.7-inches.

What do you think about the Tab S 2? I am not in love with the 4:3 ratio. Why bother?

Jonathan Ive Discusses Steve Jobs and Apple Watch in The New Yorker Interview

Jony Ive The New YorkerApple design chief Jonathan Ive has been interviewed in an exhaustive profile with The New Yorker, in which he discusses a number of topics ranging from Steve Jobs to the Apple Watch.

The interview provides a rare glimpse inside Apple’s design studio at Two Infinite Loop at its Cupertino headquarters, as Ive shares some of his experiences working at Apple over the past few decades.

The iconic designer recounts how Jobs visited Apple’s design studio upon returning to Apple in 1997 and quickly bonded with Ive, solidifying a longtime friendship between the two.

“During the visit, Ive said, Jobs ‘became more and more confident, and got really excited about our ability to work together.’ That day, according to Ive, they started collaborating on what became the iMac. Soon afterward, Apple launched its ‘Think Different’ campaign, and Ive took it as a reminder of the importance of “not being apologetic, not defining a way of being in response to what Dell just did.” He went on, ‘My intuition’s good, but my ability to articulate what I feel was not very good—and remains not very good, frustratingly. And that’s what’s hard, with Steve not being here now.’”

Ive also claimed that the Apple Watch was conceived soon before the passing of Jobs, who died in October 2011 following a lengthy battle with a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Apple CEO Tim Cook added that Apple was looking at multiple categories of products at the time and thinking about which ones to do.

“The Apple Watch—the first Apple device with a design history older than its founder, or its designer—was conceived ‘close to Steve’s death,’ Ive said. It’s hard to build a time line of this or any other Apple creation: the company treats the past, as well as the future, as its intellectual property. But, in 2011, there may have been a greater appetite than usual for investigations of new products. One could imagine that executives were eager to act, in anticipation of grief, market upheaval, and skeptical press.”

Ive went on to discuss how he believes that, while millions of people may be willing to use an iPhone that looks the same as others, the same mindset does not carry over to a wrist-worn device like the Apple Watch. Ive recognized a need for the Apple Watch to be highly customizable, with different sizes, watch bands and different alloys of aluminum, stainless steel and gold.

Ive’s position was that people were “O.K., or O.K. to a degree,” with carrying a phone that is identical to hundreds of millions of others, but they would not accept this in something that’s worn. The question, then, was “How do we create a huge range of products and still have a clear and singular opinion?” […] If variety was a perceived necessity, it was also an opportunity. “We could make aluminum, and stainless steel, and gold, and different alloys of gold,” Ive said.

The full-length interview goes into further detail about Ive’s design philosophies that went into creating the Apple Watch, alongside some interesting anecdotes and excerpts from other Apple executives such as Tim Cook, Bob Mansfield and Jeff Williams.

Toshiba shows off three camera module prototypes for Project Ara

toshiba camera modules

Project Ara is inching closer to its commercial début in Puerto Rico later this year, so it is only natural that we begin to hear word of modules that third part developers have in mind for the build-it-yourself smartphone. Last week, Toshiba showed off some of its own reference design camera modules for Ara.

Toshiba discussed three swappable modules for Ara: a 2 megapixel front facing camera bar, as well as 5MP and 13MP rear camera options. The company will also be opening up its reference designs to third party developers, to bring a wider range of camera options, and other modules, to Project Ara.

“Also we took some of Toshiba technologies and our chips, and developed some module reference designs. We can open these designs out for everybody, so people can use it for their own technology and developing modules.”

The 5MP module fits in the standard 2×1 module size for Ara and comes with its own ISP chip to handle the processing, while the 2MP front facing bar contains an extra audio codec and can communicate with other processors through common I2S and I2C interface standards. Toshiba’s 13MP camera option is based on the company’s T4K82 mobile sensor, which allows for 30fps video recording at 4K and 2K resolutions and has 120fps 1080p recording capabilities.

Toshiba camera modules explained

In addition to these sensors, Toshiba also talked about its 8MP T4KA3 and 20MP T4KA7 products for mobile devices, both of which could also be worked into future camera module designs.

Here’s a quick video of the 5MP camera module being plugged in and used to capture video in real time.

These three camera modules are just the first stage in Toshiba’s plan for modular products. The company is also developing wireless charger, TransferJet, NFC and external memory reference designs for Project Ara this year, leading into an unspecified “unique module” in 2016.

Toshiba modular dev plan

Although still far from a finished product, Toshiba’s little range of camera sensor options are an exciting prospect for Project Ara and discriminating smartphone photographers alike.

First-Gen Moto G handsets to receive Lollipop Update according to ‘Future Updates’ message from Motorola

Moto_G_Back_Camera_TA

If you own a first-generation Moto G, it appears that Motorola is sending messages to begin readying your device to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update in the ‘upcoming weeks’. If you’ve received this message, it’s important to click the ‘More Info’ tab at the bottom, as explained after the break.

Moto_G_1st_Gen_Update_Message_Screenshot_01

Motorola is asking recipients of the Future Updates message to select the ‘More Info’ tab so that they can check if their device has the latest version of Motorola Update Services installed via the Google Play Store. If not, just click update and let the install process finish. If you don’t update the services app, the message states that ‘You will not receive the lollipop upgrade if this step is incomplete.’

Now that you’ve updated the Motorola Update Services on your Moto G, it’s just a matter of waiting for the Lollipop update to arrive. As the message states though, this should be in the upcoming weeks so there isn’t long to go.

No LG G4 until at least April, Korean news outlet reports

File this one under expected and obvious: Korea Times is reporting that LG isn’t announcing the next version of its flagship line — the LG G4, if the naming convention remains consistent — until at least April. That would give it distance from the Samsung Galaxy S6, which we’re expecting to see at Mobile World Congress on March 1.

On the other hand, LG hasn’t ever announced its flagship phone at Mobile World Congress. Instead, it used that stage in 2013 and 2014 to announce the LG G Pro and LG G Pro 2, respectively. We’re not expecting a new G Pro model, with the LG G Flex 2 supplanting that line.

The LG G3 was announced in late May 2014 at events in New York and London.

Samsung Galaxy A7 available in India, priced at ₹30,499

Samsung Galaxy A7

The Galaxy A7 has been a rather elusive model in Samsung’s new look A series and was absent from the line-up when the Galaxy A and Galaxy E ranges launched in India last month. However, the Galaxy A7 (SM-A700F) is now available in the country for ₹30,499 (around $490) through Samsung’s official Indian online store.

The Galaxy A7 was officially unveiled early in the year and is the most feature rich handset in Samsung’s A range. The smartphone comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p AMOLED display and is powered by a 64-bit octa-core Snapdragon 615 processor, which features eight Cortex-A53 CPU cores. The handset also features 2GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13MP rear camera and 5MP front facing camera, dual-SIM support, Cat4 4G LTE connectivity and a 2,600mAh battery.

Samsung India lists the Galaxy A7 in Gold, Black and White color options, although only the white version appears to be in stock right now.
