IKEA Emoticons brings kindness to the keyboard no matter the message

ikea_emoticons_app_icon

To IKEA, customers should live comfortably with its furniture and communicate effectively with others. Oh, you didn’t know about the second part? The Swedish company released a keyboard packed with kind emoticons for Android (and iOS) devices. The IKEA Emoticons app is all about sending a message in the most productive way. The emoticons will “bring a smile to your loved ones faces” because of just how impossible it is to be offended by them.

Here is how IKEA says its keyboard improves communication at home:

Men and women have always found difficulty in communication. In the home situation misunderstandings occur most around clutter. And that is why IKEA introduces Emoticons: a communication tool to ensure universal love and understanding in your home. All your hints, desires and questions will be understood right away. They will even bring a smile to the faces you love!

The IKEA Emoticons app docks in the notification shade. When pulled down, select it and see the choices appear. This is just another way IKEA is staying relevant with technology.

IKEA really wants you to kill him or her with kindness. After all, it is Valentine’s Day coming up.

Deal Alert: Best Buy is throwing in a $50 gift card with purchase of a Moto 360 with metal band

moto 360 review aa (1 of 9)

If you’re in the market for an Android Wear smartwatch, Best Buy may have the deal for you. With the purchase of a Motorola Moto 360 with a 23mm metal band (Silver or Black), Best Buy is throwing in a free $50 Best Buy gift card. The total price of the watch is still $299.99 (same as the normal price), but now you can have an extra $50 to spend on whatever you’d like at the electronics retailer. If you’re up for the deal, the gift card will automatically be added to your shopping cart during checkout. Considering the fact that we don’t really see too many discounts on Motorola’s smartwatch, this is a pretty good deal.

In our full review, we explained that the Moto 360 was one of the best Android Wear devices out there. While the battery life isn’t the best and the processor could use an upgrade, it’s still one of two completely round smartwatches on the market, and we’d have no problem recommending this product to anyone looking for their first wearable. For more information on the Moto 360, check out our full review. And be sure to hit up the link below to grab your own Moto 360 with a free $50 Best Buy gift card.

If Motorola’s offering isn’t your style, Verizon is still selling the Sony SmartWatch 3 for only $199.99 ($50 off). If you’d like to take advantage of that deal, head to this link.

Siri ‘crushing’ competitors at language accuracy

Siri, Apple’s virtual personal assistant, has been improving steadily since its introducing in 2011. Streaming text to speech is one of the most recent and obvious areas of improvement, but Siri has also been adding new features and better language support. In a recent test that spanned languages, Siri scored a remarkable 76% for accuracy. That’s compared to 46% for Google Now and 42% for Microsoft Cortana. Sophie Salonga, writing for Venture Beat:

In conclusion, Siri won this battle, Cortana was voted “most likely to go to web search” and Google Now needs to go back to college and pick up a few Mandarin classes.

She’s picking on Google Now for Mandarin because it dropped accuracy by more than half, which is bu hao.

Accuracy is important, because the better a virtual assistant can understand your query, the better it can return helpful results. Nothing will ever be perfect, because language is complex and things like names make it even more so, which is why it’s also great that if Siri is pronouncing a name wrong, you can teach it the proper pronunciation. You can tap an error in transcription, edit it it, and Siri will return an updated result.

When you combine “Hey, Siri”, which allows for optional voice-activation when plugged into AC power, the ability to post Facebook status updates, to ask how much time is left in a sports event, to play podcasts by show or episode, buy iTunes Radio songs or gift certificates, and search for tweets posted by specific people, it makes Siri even more useful to even more people for even more things.

Throw out a landmark like Statue of Liberty or Great Wall of China and you’ll get maps or Wikipedia results giving you all the information you need.

Siri also does sequential inference, so if you ask about the capitol of Germany, it will tell you Berlin. Then, if you ask what the population is, without mentioning a specific place, Siri assumes you’re continuing the same conversation and gives you the population of Berlin. Or if you say “what’s Ally’s phone number”, and then “call her”, Siri knows to call Ally.

Apple does, intentionally, limit Siri’s scope. As a company, Apple is against harvesting its customer data. Apple doesn’t want to be monitoring our web history, for example, or running analysis and transactions against our mail or calendars on its servers.

That means Siri is not allowed to do some of the things competing products that get access to far more of our information can do. Just liked security, privacy is continually at war with convenience and it’s up to each company and each individual to decide how much of one they’re willing to give up for the other.

Siri is also an interface for CarPlay, HomeKit, and Apple Watch, and personally, that’s the kind of convenience I want.

dead_trigger_2_valentines_day_heart_attack_update

On Saturday, couples young and old will have dinner dates after catching the 5:30PM showing of 50 Shades of Grey. Those who are single, though, will carry about Valentine’s Day just as they would on any other Saturday. One item to put on the to-do list is checking out the latest content update for Dead Trigger 2. The popular first-person shooter, developed by Madfinger Games, has a content update released just in time for Valentine’s Day. The Heart Attack content update features Valentine’s Day themed pieces of scenery to keep the love alive. For a gamer that is single, this is the most romantic thing to hit Valentine’s Day in quite some time.

Madfinger Games included changes aside from the aforementioned content update. Gameplay has been improved and its difficulty tweaked. The developer also says that optimization “across the board for all devices” is here. And, to finish things off, Dead Trigger 2 now has Android TV support to take the game to a television.

AT&T unveils new 7GB data plan with rollover data for $75

AT&T logo [aa] (4)

AT&T has just announced a new data tier to their growing list of Mobile Share Value plans. Beginning Sunday, February 15th for a limited time, users can have 7GB of sharable data per month with unlimited talk and text for $75. Now, the $75 only covers the data charges, so your plan will be more expensive depending on how many lines are sharing that data.

Each smartphone line access fee is usually $40 per line, so your monthly bill can rise up relatively quickly if you’re sharing the data with multiple people. However, if you’re willing to sign up for AT&T’s Next program on the 7GB data tier, the carrier will cut down each fee to $15 per line. For example, three smartphones sharing the 7GB data tier along with unlimited calling and texting would equal out to $120 per month. Of course, you’ll still need to factor in the monthly cost of each device through the Next program, so your overall cost will be more than $120.

Also for a limited time, users who decide to switch to AT&T will receive a $100 bill credit when they purchase a new smartphone on AT&T Next. So, if you decide that the AT&T Next program is for right you, there are a handful of good offers to be had.

Helpouts by Google Shutting Down.

So long farewell. It’s time to say adieu to another Google experiment. If you were one of a few people using the service, after Monday, 20 April, 2015 it will be no more. According to Google about Helpouts, “it wasn’t growing at the pace they (Google) needed it (Helpouts) to.”

Since 2013, Helpouts provided a unique service on the internet where experts can share (either for free or in most cases a fee) their knowledge with those who sought that help. There were a variety of different topics users could select from including how to cook, tips on improving house or gardening. Starting April 20, 2015, you can download your history using Google Takeout. After November 1, 2015, you will no longer be able to.

Did any of you have your own expertise hotline or did you use Google Helpouts when needing help with something? We would like to hear your experience with it.
