Samsung bets on OLED as smartphone sales decline

It’s easy to forget that Samsung is a multi-tentacled company that builds much more than TVs and phones. For instance, it manufactures CPUs for arch-foe Apple and makes small-to-medium OLED panels for various companies, not just its own mobile division. According to Reuters, Samsung will invest another $3.6 billion into its OLED business to offset flagging smartphone sales. Most of that cash will go into a new production line producing curved panels for the Galaxy Note edge and third-party devices. And Samsung’s not the only South Korean manufacturer dumping more money into OLEDs. LG will also stake nearly $1 billion on new OLED capacity for large-panel items like TVs, as well. The takeaway? Given the display dominance of the two companies, many more OLED devices — both big and small — should be hitting the market soon.

NVIDIA press invitations rolling out, new gaming product coming March 3rd

Are you ready to see a big change in the world of gaming? NVIDIA says they’ve got a product demonstration coming up that has been five years in the making, ready to “redefine the future of gaming,” and it all takes place on March 3rd, just before the start of all the other MWC announcements next month.
NVIDIA has been up to big things lately, their latest chipset on the market, the Tegra K1, has been running very well in devices like the Nexus 9. The successor Tegra X1 was announced at CES in January, expanding the availability of high-end 64-bit mobile processors on the market.
We only just heard that NVIDIA has an update to their SHIELD Tablet in the works as well, expected to rock that latest Tegra X SoC.

NVIDIA is not new to the gaming scene either, having previously released a SHIELD mobile gaming unit, and a gaming controller. Amazon and Google released their own console offerings, the Fire TV and Nexus Player, respectively. With competition heating up, we will all be winners with better devices headed to market.
MWC is coming, are you excited to see a new gaming device from NVIDIA?
Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 starting to see Lollipop update in India
While we’re still waiting on Samsung to get its Lollipop update pushed out to all variants of the Galaxy S 5, last year’s flagship is beginning to see the 5.0 update rollout. Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 has started receiving the Lollipop upgrade, at least in India.
The update brings all of Google’s 5.0 improvements, including the Material Design aesthetic, but you’ll also get a handful of bug fixes, performance improvements, and better battery life.
The update is available OTA or through Kies, if you happen to own an Indian Galaxy S 4.

Box’s private security key helps keep spying eyes off your files
Box already encrypts the files you store in its cloud, but it also stores the necessary security key on its own servers. If a government wants to look at your data, it can theoretically order Box to hand over the key and expose all your sensitive info without your knowledge. The company just unveiled a clever way to fight these kinds of intrusions, though. It has a new paid option, Enterprise Key Management, that gives the corporate crowd a secondary key held on a separate, privately rented device. If you’re using EKM, the only way to access your files is to have full use of both keys — hackers and snoops can’t look at your company’s files without giving you a clue that something’s up.
The service is in beta right now, and it’ll take months before it’s available to many customers. There’s no mention of a personal version, either. However, EKM could still give Box an edge in countries that don’t trust the US following revelations about the NSA’s mass surveillance programs. Box is effectively promising that it won’t turn against its clients at a moment’s notice, and that even determined attackers would have to go out of their way to break in.

iPhone theft down by 40% in San Francisco, 25% in New York thanks to Activation Lock
The introduction of Activation Lock was credited by the FCC in December as the main factor behind the reduction in iPhone-related theft, and new data suggests that the trend has continued since. The latest numbers reveal a decline of 40 percent in the number of iPhones stolen in San Francisco and 25 percent in New York between September 2013 and September 2014.
The number of iPhones stolen in London was reduced by half during the same time period, with mayor Boris Johnson stating:
We have made real progress in tackling the smartphone theft epidemic that was affecting many major cities just two years ago.
Activation Lock made its debut with iOS 7, with the feature allowing users to remotely lock an iPhone with their iCloud credentials, requiring authentication with Apple before the device can be accessed again.
California passed a law in August 2014 that requires all smartphones sold in the state to include a kill switch by July 2015. The feature comes as standard on the latest version of Android, and Microsoft is also said to be working on a kill switch that will be included as standard on Windows Phones that will be launched later this year.

Sony balls on a budget with the Xperia E4
This week Sony announced the Xperia E4, a move that should finally solidify their entry into the low end mobile device market. The E4 will be a more financially feasible handset for the Android users looking for a phone to fit their budget. Look for the device to feature a qHD screen measuring 5.1 inches. Even at a budget price the specs don’t really scream “low-end”. The trend of flagship manufacturers releasing bargain phones is one that does not seem to be changing any time this year. Sony is making a solid move with this phone. With a Meditek 1.8 quad-core processor, 1gb of memory, and 8gb of storage the E4 could shape up to be a decent device. Sony doesn’t drop the ball in the camera department either. The E4 comes equipped with a five megapixel rear camera and a two megapixel front facing shooter. Five megapixel cameras were standard in high end devices just two years ago.
The Xperia line has become known for its impressive battery life. Sony claims that the budget specs paired with a 2,300mah battery makes sure this device gets 2 full days of usage while in “Stamina” mode. Expect to see this device ship later this month, with no confirmed US carriers announced, in select markets with Android 4.4.4 kitkat installed. The Sony E4 comes in black and white.

Google integrating G+ Photos into Google Drive
One of the most overdue features for Google’s cloud storage service, Drive, has been the ability to look at your Google+ photos. Google owns both services, so you’d think they would be interconnected, right? Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case up until now, but it looks like Google is working on rectifying that.
One user on Reddit has noticed an option in Drive’s settings to automatically integrate G+ Photos into Drive, creating a separate Google Photos folder where all of the backed up pictures from the social network are presumably stored. The option isn’t showing up for anyone else, but the Redditor has uploaded a couple of screenshots showing the new feature. There’s no telling if this is an incredibly elaborate hoax or if Google is testing out the feature in a very limited user base, but this move makes sense for Google.
We’ll keep you updated if the feature makes it way to other users over the next few weeks.
