[Deal] Get 100GB of OneDrive storage for free through Bing Rewards

onedrive_space_02

Through their Bing Rewards program, Microsoft is offering users access to 100GB of OneDrive storage for a two-year period. The offer is good until the end of February.

To take advantage of this special offer, you need to start out with a Microsoft account. If you already have a Microsoft account, sign-in at microsoft.com. If you do not have an account, you can sign up for one for free.

Once logged in, go to bing.com and look for a link to the Bing Rewards program. For some users this may be at the bottom of the page, although I was able to use a small icon in the top banner of the page to access the Bing Rewards sign-in page. This is another step where you can join the Bing Rewards program for free if you are not already a member.

Once logged in to the Bing Rewards site, just look for the “Earn and explore” section and you should see an option to claim 100GB of OneDrive storage for two years.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has a OneDrive for Android app so you can access files on all that storage from your Android device. If you are running low on cloud-based storage and do not want to pay for space, this may be a good option for you for a couple of years.

Android 5.0.1 begins worldwide rollout for Samsung Galaxy Note 4

For those who keep track, you’ll know that rollouts usually begin in Poland – who knows why – so it’s of no surprise that the Android 5.0.1 rollout for the Galaxy Note 4 has just been delivered to Poland.

This sparks the impending rollout of Android 5.0.1 Lollipop to the rest of the worlds Samsung Galaxy Note 4’s, finally.

Keep bashing that update button!

Lollipop update hitting Galaxy Note 4, starting in Poland

Galaxy Note 4 Android Lollipop

Believe it or not, this screenshot was posted way back in December. Now approaching Mid-February, Lollipop is finally launching for the Note 4, in Poland at least.

When it comes to Lollipop, suffice to say that some have been showered in sweets more than others; the Moto X, LG G3, and Samsung Galaxy S5 come to mind in addition to the GPe devices and Nexus devices. Meanwhile, in recent weeks even the Galaxy S4 has received Android 5.X. To say that Galaxy Note 4 owners are a bit upset might be an understatement, though fortunately it seems the time may finally be right.

For owners of the SM-910C variant in Poland, today is the day for loading up Lollipop. Reports indicate that while the Android 5.0.1 update is not yet available on Kies, it is being pushed to some devices as an OTA update. Those eager to snack on sweets can try to force things by accessing the “Check for Updates” section in the Settings > About Device menu. However, it’s not a sure-fire shot unfortunately, and thus waiting is the name of the game.

Android enthusiasts may recall that Poland was also the first place to receive the Lollipop update for the Galaxy S5 and the LG G3, and thus the country’s status as a testing ground before widespread roll-out seems to be continuing. With LG it was only a matter of a few weeks before the update was deployed across Europe in a larger fashion, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the same follow suit here with Samsung’s fabulous phablet.

While this might be a breath of fresh air to those living in some parts of the world, for those in North America (the USA in particular), the game of patience is seemingly a much longer road to glory: recall that the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update only began to release to US carrier variants in the recent past.

The Lollipop update brings the Note 4 a refreshed appearance, lockscreen notifications, heads-up notifications, and improved performance and battery life, among others.

Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop Beta

When will the Note Edge see Lollipop? Alas the answer is as rhetorical as the famous Tootsie Pop question.

It remains to be seen when the Galaxy Note Edge will receive the latest major Android release. While a leaked build has been seen before, there is no solid news of a date to declare. Given the recent report that the device sold far less than a million units however, it might be a fair assumption to think Samsung is a bit more focused on getting the Note 4 out the door before changing gears to its sloped sibling.

Hopefully this bit of good news will brighten the smiles of our readers. as opposed to leaked builds and test versions with no launch in site. Please feel free to share impressions or thoughts if and when your Note 4 is updated!

Urban Engines app can help people catch buses and trains in big cities

It can be downright nightmarish having to squeeze and force your way into trains or buses during rush hours in big cities. A company founded by former Google employees called Urban Engines says its app can help you look for alternate routes, or even help you get around if you’re not familiar with the area. For one, it can work without mobile data in some locations (which makes it a good choice for those who regularly use the subway), so long as it has an offline map of the place. Right now, the app comes with the offline maps of 10 North American cities: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington, D.C.

Unlike in Google Maps, you don’t need to type locations: just drag the map to place your destination in the middle of the screen, and the app will come up with various routes for your commute. Finally (and best of all), the app has sort of an augmented reality feature called X-ray mode, which superimposes maps, bus or train routes and stops over the city as viewed by the camera. While this is Urban Engines’ first product for consumers, it has been around for at least a year. In 2014, it focused on providing commuting patterns and data to some cities across the globe in an effort to prevent passenger congestion. If you think it could potentially be of use for your daily commute, you can download the company’s app through either iTunes and Google Play.

RootMetrics performance review for 2014: Verizon leads in all categories, T-Mobile gives impressive metro speed performance

rootmetrics_performancereview2014_picture1

RootMetrics, a consumer focused, independent mobile network tester, has released its latest United States report discussing where mobile carriers are leading and where they’re falling behind.

For 2014, RootMetrics has taken the crown away from AT&T and given it to Verizon, who took first place in all of the categorical breakdowns RootMetrics tested.

Focusing on network speeds and reliability, RootMetrics has six main categories:

  1. Overall Performance (a combination of results from data, call, and text testing)
  2. Network Reliability (a holistic look at reliability across all of our testing)
  3. Network Speed (a holistic look at speed across data and text testing)
  4. Data Performance
  5. Call Performance
  6. Text Performance

While Verizon took first and AT&T taking second overall, in the sub-category of metro network speed, T-Mobile delivered some impressive results. These speeds even beat 2013′s overall winner AT&T.

In the 125 markets where all carriers are present and offering 4G speeds, Verizon and T-Mobile both averaged 10+ Mbps at a higher occurrence than the other two main US carriers. Out of that 125, Verizon did these numbers in 122 of them, while T-Mobile did it in 108. AT&T was only able to accomplish this in 93 cities.

If you’re wanting to kick it up a notch, when looking at the frequency in which carriers averaged 20+ Mbps speeds in 41 metros, Verizon dominated with 40 cities and T-Mobile did half as well with 20 cities. AT&T only reached these stats in 14 cities.
