With the update available as a download within the Parallels Desktop app for existing users/a>, the company promises the Mac-based Windows 10 experience will provide users with “everything Windows 10 has to offer.” This includes everything from the new Start menu, Photos, Maps app, and Cortana, to the Windows Store beta which offers Office Preview for Windows 10, all available without having to erase the existing functioning operating system.

“Parallels Desktop enjoys very strong support among software developers and IT pros. We are happy to deliver all the tools they need to quickly and safely test or run the latest OS and applications, now including the Windows 10 Technical Preview,” said Parallels president Jack Zubarev.

Similarly, users upgrading from existing Parallels Desktop versions, like 8 or 9, can get a discount for version 10, with upgrade pricing set at $49.99. A two-week free trial is available to anyone who wants to try out the program’s features, including the new technical preview of Windows 10, for a limited time frame.

Samsung investing heavily in OLED display production

samsung galaxy note edge review aa (10 of 26)

Samsung has announced plans to invest 4 trillion won ($3.6 trillion) into organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production for medium and small-sized panels found in mobile and other consumer electronics products.

The investment will be spread between 2015 and 2017 and could help Samsung offset falling revenues resulting from the well documented decline in the company’s handset sales.

We have already seen similar boosts to Samsung’s semiconductor business help prop up profits last quarter and the company is expected to begin building a 15.6 trillion won chip production plant in South Korea within the next few months. The outlook for Samsung’s various component manufacturing arms seems much more positive than mobile sale expectations.

According to analysts, the new production line will likely initially focus on production for Samsung’s own products, such as curved panels for the Galaxy Note Edge and rumored Galaxy S6 curved displays. Further down the line, Samsung could begin providing OLED products to rival mobile firms who don’t have their own production capabilities. However, LG Display, Samsung’s largest competitor in the flexible display space, is reported to be investing between 1 and 1.2 trillion won into additional OLED production capacity later this year also.

With mobile shipments slowing over the past 12 months, Samsung may become increasingly reliant on external customers for revenue growth. The company’s leading OLED and semiconductor production technologies could well become increasingly important aspects of Samsung’s business model in the next few years.

Image leaks of unknown HTC smartphone

HTC_Phone_Leak_Unknown_021115

While browsing my Twitter feed this morning, an image of some sort of HTC device popped up. It appears to be a smartphone as you can see the BoomSound speaker, but it’s probably not the upcoming One (M9). From what we know about the One (M9), it will sport much lower profile BoomSound speakers, so what is this mysterious device?

The next bet would have to be a Desire phone, but even the newer devices aren’t sporting this type of speaker grill. However, we do know that a new Desire could get announced at MWC.

Even the leaker doesn’t know what the device is. Any guesses?

iPhone Theft Continues to Drop in Three Major Cities Thanks to Activation Lock [iOS Blog]

Authorities from two major U.S. cities and London on Tuesday reported (via Reuters) that smartphone theft has dropped drastically since the release of remote-access “kill-switches” that allow users to lock their missing smartphone before any crucial information is stolen. Specifically, the number of stolen iPhones dropped 25 percent in New York, 40 percent in San Francisco, and 50 percent in London.

The study was based on the 12 months following the launch of Activation Lock in September 2013 as part of iOS 7. These numbers have jumped up slightly from a similar report released last summer that saw iPhone thefts in each city fall by 19 percent, 38 percent, and 24 percent, respectively.

According to Reuters, officials from each of the three cities – London Mayor Boris Johnson, San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, and New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman – were each lobbying for laws that required the implementation of remote kill switches into every smartphone sold.

“We have made real progress in tackling the smartphone theft epidemic that was affecting many major cities just two years ago,” said London Mayor Boris Johnson.

From data collected by the National Consumers League, Reuters reports that 1.6 million Americans reported stolen handheld devices in 2012. And in California alone – specifically San Francisco, Oakland, and a few other cities – smartphone theft accounts for more than half of all crimes perpetrated in each city.

“The wireless industry continues to roll out sophisticated new features, but preventing their own customers from being the target of a violent crime is the coolest technology they can bring to market,” Gascon said.

Apple’s default Activation Lock feature received much praise following its launch in 2013. A few months later Apple and a few other notable smartphone makers, like Samsung and Google, entered into a voluntary agreement to have every smartphone sold on or after July 2015 come pre-installed with a kill-switch, a date that’s rapidly approaching. California itself issued a law last August, designating a similar July 2015 date for every smartphone sold in the state to have the anti-theft software pre-installed.

Bloomberg confirms “all-metal” Galaxy S6 and Edge, as more renders and schematics surface

galaxy s6 renders (1)

Render made by UnderKG based on available information

The Galaxy S6 and its double-edged sibling have starred in dozens of rumors and renders over the last couple of weeks, but most of them came from unverified or unreliable sources.

Now a highly respected news organization is weighing in on the matter, confirming key details about the upcoming Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Citing “people with direct knowledge of the matter,” Bloomberg confirmed today that both the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge will feature “all-metal” bodies and Samsung’s “most advanced processor chips.” Both devices will feature 5.1-inch screens and metal frames manufactured by Chinese supplier BYD Electronic, said the sources.

The report cites analyst Lee Seung Woo of Korean firm IBK Securities saying that Samsung is looking at curved screens that wrap around the edges as a differentiator against both Apple, which pummeled Samsung last quarter, and the wave of budget-focused competitors nipping at Samsung’s market share. “Samsung need a model with new technology to stop the iPhone juggernaut and to distinguish it from others,” said the analyst.

All in all, this Bloomberg report adds credence to the rather amorphous body of rumors and unverified stories that coalesced around Samsung’s Next Big Thing.

In more traditional leak territory, Korean website UnderKG (via GforGames) came up with a series of product schematics and renders that allegedly show the upcoming Galaxy S6. The images are consistent with the news and other renders we’ve seen this past week, as well as with the “all-metal” build mentioned by Bloomberg.

Note that these are not press renders or other official imagery. They are renders made by UnderKG based on info it secured.

The designs show rounded metallic edges and a port and speaker placement that somehow resemble the latest iPhones. If this ends up being the actual design, Samsung may be exposing itself to more copycatting allegations. Then again, Samsung could argue that designing an all-metal device imposes certain limitations, like the necessity for plastic cutouts for antennas.

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will be unveiled on March 1, ahead of MWC Barcelona. Stay tuned for more.

HTC to unveil “Petra” smartwatch at the MWC 2015

HTC_Desire_Eye_Back_HTC_Logo_TA

A new report from renowned leakster Upleaks claims that HTC is looking to finally enter the smartwatch segment with a new wearable known as the “Petra“. It is said that this wearable will run a custom HTC developed operating system called RTOS instead of Google’s Android Wear platform. This means the wearable will be compatible with both Android and iOS devices at the time of launch.

The Petra will reportedly feature a 1.8 inch 32 x 160 resolution display, IP57 certification for water and dust resistance, more than 3 days of battery life and support for GPS. The smartwatch will weigh only 23 grams apparently, which is feather light for a wearable.

The launch is expected to take place by Q1 2015 so it should be shown off during HTC’s One M9 launch event on the 1st of March. The Petra will reportedly break cover in the U.S. first and is said to be available in Teal/Lime and Black/Blue Gray color variants.
