NVIDIA Shield Second-Gen Coming Soon, Will Include X1 Processor

NVIDIA-Shield-2

NVIDIA’s Shield gaming tablet has only been in the market for about seven months, but its successor is already looming on the horizon. Reported to contain the Tegra X1 chipset, an upgrade from the current K1 chip , the next generation of the Shield tablet will likely improve upon its predecessor by most metrics.

The current Shield boasts a 2.2GHz quad-core Tegra K1, which has been no slouch in the performance department. Indeed, the Shield is one of the best-reviewed smallish Android tablets of the past year, with some likening it to a HGC-abusing Nexus 7.

The X1, however, will feature eight cores, 64-bit architecture, and will utilize the new Maxwell GPU. Early tests show the X1 as 40% more powerful than the K1. We’re hoping the second-generation tablet will have battery capacity to match the beefed up processor.

As far as other specs the first generation Shield has 2GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage (depending on the model being WiFi-only or LTE-enabled), an SD card slot, 5MP front and rear cameras, dual-band wireless N, and a 1200p IPS screen at 294 ppi.

Though mobile devices continue to out-pixel one another, it will be interesting to see if NVIDIA, in constructing a tablet aimed at gamers, takes the bait and improves the Shield to a 2K screen or higher, considering its current resolution is in the sweet spot for the gaming community; higher ppi means potentially dropped frames – verboten to the gaming world.

Also, an upgrade to the wireless AC protocol might be in the works, but it seems not every device manufacturer is yet on board with the perceived need of AC at this juncture.

As for other specs for the “Shield 2,” it’s all conjecture. LTE connectivity might come right out of the gate, and we can surely expect Android 5.0 Lollipop – if not the freshly leaked 5.1 – to come standard.

NVIDIA has a conference on March 17, where an announcement is likely, and we’ll bring you those details as soon as they come.

Leaked image claims to depict the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge

galaxy-s6-galaxy-s6-edge-leak-cnet

Although nothing has been confirmed, it would appear that Samsung has sprung a leak as of late given the waves of materials claiming to depict the Galaxy S6 in all its case-enclosed glory. It is understood that Samsung will be releasing a Galaxy S Edge model as well, something that became a much more plausible presumption earlier this week when the MWC (Unpacked) invitations went out. And now, we may have the first images of what the product might look like.

While the two devices on the left are believed to be the Galaxy S6 (and thus further the belief of a relocated flash/fingerprint sensor and protruding camera), the three on the right are apparently of the Galaxy S Edge. To be sure, the picture certainly looks real, and given that it’s showcasing cases made by Korean case manufacturer Versus, it would seemingly be all the more legitimate.

At first sight, the image may be a little confusing, because the right slope isn’t visible for the rightmost device; however, the right slope is clearly present on the second device from right. It’s very likely that this apparent inconsistency is due to the angle at which the device is shown in the render. After all, multiple leaks point to Samsung launching a device with two slanted edges.

Just to speculate, it’s theoretically possible that Samsung plans to produce two different variants so as to accommodate people of differing dominant hands: one with the curve on the right, and one with the curve on the left. Considering that the Note Edge was criticized for its alleged handling problems for southpaws (a problem this writer had no trouble with whatsoever for reference) it would make some sense.

The Samsung logos on the devices are extremely small, to the point of looking just plain out of place, especially on the fourth device from the left. And, on the leftmost device, the logo seems to be off-centered. These inconsistencies would strongly suggest this is an unofficial render made by Verus, rather than an image made or sanctioned by Samsung. So there’s a good chance the real product will look somehow different.

Would you be interested in a dual-Edge device like the one in this image?`

Top hospitals in the US are actively deploying Apple HealthKit pilot programs

Apple is currently rolling out its HealthKit service, with 14 of the top 23 hospitals polled in the US stating that they are already in the first stages of pilot programs built on the solution. Reuters noted that while Apple is ahead of Samsung and Google in reaching out to hospitals and deploying its health services, hospitals were also eager to try out Google Fit. According to the Reuters report:

Apple has recruited informal industry advisors, including Rana and John Halamka, chief information officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, to discuss health data privacy and for introductions to the industry. The company said it had an “incredible team” of experts in health and fitness and was talking to medical institutions, healthcare and industry experts on ways to deliver its services.

The HealthKit service acts as a repository for patient-generated health information, including blood pressure, weight and heart rate. This data can be collected by the user of Apple hardware and then tapped into by a doctor for immediate analysis. With the launch of the Apple Watch just around the corner, it will become increasingly more convenient for consumers.

Such systems hold the promise of allowing doctors to watch for early signs of trouble and intervene before a medical problem becomes acute. That could help hospitals avoid repeat admissions, for which they are penalized under new U.S. government guidelines, all at a relatively low cost.

It’s worth noting that this is merely the test bed for the new solutions to be deployed in hospitals. There’s a long road to travel down yet before we see said solutions really make a difference in healthcare. For now, Apple appears to have the lead and experts believe there will be a time when a standard will need to be adopted for data to be collected from all services.

New screenshots surface, claim to show Windows 10 Preview for phones

We’ve received screenshots offering a first look of Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones. The screenshots showcase the action center, which includes an expanded list of toggles extending up to three rows. Also highlighted is the new Settings pane, which lists options under different categories.

And if they’re truly genuine it looks like we might see a message from Seattle Seahawks Quarterback, Russell Wilson, stating “every setback has a major comeback.” He was of course referring to the Seahawks dramatic Super Bowl loss to the Patriots, but it’s incredibly apt given the adventure Microsoft is about to embark upon with Windows.

While Xbox One gamers are enjoying the first-person shooter game Evolve, Windows Phone gamers have a slightly different version of the game to pass the time with.

Evolve: Hunters Quest is a Windows Phone game that has you solving match-three puzzles that in turn drives a team of hunter’s actions as they deal with a wide variety of mutated creatures. Evolve: Hunters Quest has over one hundred missions to tackle and team members can be ranked up to make each member more formidable as they encounter monsters that are more dangerous.

Available for low-memory Windows Phones, Evolve: Hunters Quest is a fun Windows Phone game that is somewhat addictive. It could use a little fine-tuning but overall, it is an appealing title to have in your gaming library.
