With all of the great tablets available on the market, it’s a wonder more aren’t coming with keyboards included. I don’t think there’s anyone, who does any substantial amount of typing, that prefers an on-screen keyboard over the real deal. Of course you have things like the Microsoft Surface and a few others, but I see lots of folks struggling to type away on their iPads on a daily basis. In the past, upgrading your unit with a keyboard meant lugging around a cumbersome piece of rigid plastic that was almost bound to snap in half. Well, say goodbye to unattractively composed e-mails or surfboard-sized keyboard attachments with this new foldable Bluetooth keyboard from myType.
myType is an extremely portable wireless keyboard that connects to your device with ease using Bluetooth technology. It folds into a pocket-friendly size and has a robust battery life that supports roughly 8 hours of constant typing. Thin and quiet, this is perfect for the office, meetings, or public cafes and coffee shops. For us Android users, the MicroUSB charging port means it will interface with all of our existing chargers. This was big at CES, this year, and regularly goes for $70 but AndroidGuys readers can fold this deal up for just $49.99!

Unlocking your device for use on other carriers is a pain. There is a load of red tape around unlocking your device. The easiest way I have discovered is just spending the money to get an unlock code from a site like UnlockUnit.
Well the good people at UnlockUnit have made things even easier for you! They are here to offer up not one, but five unlock codes to our readers.
UnlockUnit is the service that I used on my Moto X 2013. I didn’t do this just once, but three separate times. I have tried other sites, but they failed to get find my unlock code. UnlockUnit hasn’t failed me once!
Rules are fairly simple. Just select the option for your entry (you can pick more than one) and hope for the best. Remember as well, you can share the giveaway on Facebook or Twitter every day for additional entries.
Also be aware, these codes will work for any device supported on their website. Yes, including iPhones.

The dual-SIM version of the Lumia 435 smartphone is now on sale in India on Microsoft’s web store. The price of the latest Windows Phone is 5,999 INR, or about $100.
While the featured addition in yesterday’s OS X 10.10.3 developer seed was the new Photos app, Apple is addressing other issues with the forthcoming update, and one of these focus areas is emoji, which is seeing several changes and improvements.
One immediately evident change is the menu option used to bring up the character palette where emoji and other symbols can be browsed and selected. The Character palette a is systemwide option generally accessed through the “Edit” menu in most Mac apps. On OS X 10.10.2 and earlier, the menu item is called “Special Characters,” while on OS X 10.10.3, it is labeled “Emoji & Symbols”. The change offers a clearer description of what can be accessed through the menu item while specifically giving a strong visibility boost to emoji.
Another significant change for emoji in OS X 10.10.3 is the apparent laying of groundwork to support skin tone modifiers proposed for the Unicode 8.0 standard. Apple noted almost a year ago that it was working with the Unicode Consortium to bring more diversity to emoji, and the proposed skin tone modifiers are a significant step in that direction. OS X 10.10.3 also appears to include a number of placeholders for new emoji in the character palette, but no images or descriptions have yet been added for these entries.
Character palette showing placeholders for new emoji and an arrow on the “Man” emoji to provide access to skin tone options
The skin tone modifier proposal would apply to certain skin-colored emoji, allowing users to select from a range of skin tones to best represent the message they wish to send via emoji. As can be seen in OS X 10.10.3, many of these skin-colored emoji now display an arrow that when clicked brings up a menu of options.
Apparent incomplete implementation of skin tone modifier options for the “Man” emoji
While the menu is currently non-functional, it does show the selected emoji followed by five instances of the emoji paired with a number one inside a black box. These are presumably incomplete implementations of skin tone modifiers, waiting for the Unicode Consortium to finalize its standards for Unicode 8.0. Just yesterday, the Unicode Technical Committee officially moved the technical report covering skin tone modifiers and other emoji changes for Unicode 8.0 to draft status, and Unicode 8.0 itself has been approved for beta release.
In one other change for emoji in OS X 10.10.3, the pop-up emoji picker available in many apps has been transitioned from a paginated layout to a single larger vertical-scrolling page. Under OS X 10.10.2 and earlier, the various emoji categories are contained on separate pages within the picker, with users needing to click on a toolbar along the bottom to change pages.
Emoji picker in OS X 10.10.2 (left) with paginated categories vs. OS X 10.10.3 (right) with single scrollable page and category jumps
In OS X 10.10.3, all emoji are displayed on a single page, and while they are still organized by category and users can still click toolbar buttons to quickly jump between categories, users can now also simply scroll the entire list if they wish.
All of these changes come as emoji have exploded in popularity, spreading beyond their origin in Japan to be embraced worldwide as a quick, fun, and easy way to share a variety of emotions and thoughts, most commonly within messaging apps. As a result, Apple has been working to increase support for emoji across iOS and OS X, and this first OS X 10.10.3 developer build is a clear sign of that continued interest.
A new entry on the GFXBench testing website may be the forthcoming Sony E4. The Sony E4 is expected to be the next iteration of Sony’s budget model following up on the Sony E3. We originally thought the device may be revealed at CES 2015 after an image surfaced back in December. After that did not materialize, we started looking toward MWC 2015 to see whether Sony might reveal the device during that event. The specs listed on the GFXBench site are mostly consistent with earlier reports of the Sony E4, though it looks like the smartphone may have shrunk just a little bit.
According to the new entry for Sony devices with model number E2003 and E2033, Sony is producing a smartphone with a 4.6-inch 960 x 540 resolution screen powered by a MediaTek MT6752 chip running at 1.5 GHz and 1 GB of RAM. The device will also come with 8 MB of internal storage expandable via microSD, a 5MP rear-facing camera, support for 4G LTE, and it will run Android KitKat. When the device first appeared, it was expected to have at least a 5-inch screen and a slightly slower 1.3 GHz MediaTek 6582 processor.
Although smartphone manufacturers always have a lot riding on their flagship devices and this is true for struggling Sony, having a wide and deep portfolio of devices is important as well. While this new low- to mid-range device may not be exciting, it will be important to Sony’s business, so don’t be surprised to see it surface as part of Sony’s announcements at MWC 2015.

While just about every OEM has seemingly been more aggressive with rolling out Lollipop to devices than they have been with previous Android updates, the real surprise is that Samsung has been at the forefront when it comes to bringing Lollipop to its devices, introducing Android 5.0 to both older and newer members of the Note and Galaxy S family. Now a new report says that the Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-A is joining the pack.
News of this update comes to us from SamMobile, where it says that the GS4 LTE-A (GT-I9506) is rolling out in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany. All three regions have the same build number for the update, I9506XXUDOA6, and the upgrade is based on Android 5.0.1. Upgrading can be done either through Samsung Kies or through an OTA, though the later option will require more of a wait.
While Material Design elements are much lesser notable than they would be on a stock Android device, there’s still several changes including brighter colors, an updated multitasking interface, a new lock screen and the priority system for Lollipop. There’s also quite a few bug fixes introduced, though there’s several new introduced — but that’s a discussion for another day.
What do you think of Samsung’s updating schedule for Lollipop? Impressed by what you’ve seen so far?
Give some students a 3D-printer, some solar panels and about a year’s worth of time, and what do you get? No, not a solar-powered bong (though good idea) — solar race cars, that’s what! Engineering students from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have built 3D-printed solar electric car prototype, the NTU Venture 8 (NV8), and plan to race it in Shell’s Eco Marathon Asia event later this month. The team was originally looking at a supercar design, but decided to go with “a sensible cute micro-car with vertical opening doors” that can run at up to 60 km/h (37 mph).
The students said that the vehicle “is Singapore’s first and probably Asia’s first 3D-printed concept car,” with the cockpit fabricated from 150 lighweight plastic parts. The design maximizes interior space thanks to a strong honeycomb design, and its slightly translucent skin “is a sight to behold,” according to the team. The NV8 was printed in part at NTU’s recently opened $5 million Additive Manufacturing Center, built to allow students and staff to pursue 3D-printing research projects.

While the NV8 will run in the “urban concept” category, the team also developed a carbon fiber three-wheeler to race for the prestigious prototype prize. They went for broke on that design, making the vehicles as cutting-edge as possible using hand-made, curved solar panels and a leaning function to allow for quick cornering — not unlike Toyota’s iRoad EV concept.

Sprint and Radio Shack on Thursday announced a deal which will see the nation’s third largest wireless provider picking up approximately 1,750 stores.
Sprint currently has more than 1,100 company-owned retail stores, which would more than double if the transaction is approved.
As part of the Radio Shack bankruptcy filing, Sprint will soon operate as a store-within-a-store and receive co-branding. Sprint will receive about 30 percent of the retail space in each location with the other 70 percent being allocated to other tech gear.
It’s not clear what will happen in regards to the other wireless providers sold at Radio Shack. We’ll assume, for now, that Verizon, AT&T, and their respective brands will not be offered in the new Sprint and Radio Shack stores.

Embattled upstart OnePlus has announced the release date for its OxygenOS Android overlay: February 12th. The announcement came via OnePlus CEO Peter Lau’s Weibo page, where he posted an image of four individuals, one of whom is wearing a cowboy hat, basked in ethereal mystery, apparently poised to usher in this new era of Oxygen.
If you’ve only casually followed OnePlus’ history, you might recall that it has a partnership with Cyanogen, offering the popular CyanogenMod custom ROM as its baseline software on OnePlus devices, including the OnePlus One.
However, late last year, Indian manufacturer Micromax struck and exclusivity deal with Cyanogen, which called into question OnePlus’ ability to continue loading CyanogenMod for the Indian market.
Then, the OnePlus One was banned in India altogether before the judge reversed his decision because Micromax devices don’t compete in the same space as OnePlus devices. Or so he said.
Enter OxygenOS, OnePlus’ attempt at an Android ROM, and one that has come at a pretty impressive pace. Cyanogen has barely started releasing nightlies of CyanogenMod 12, but here we are, slated to see a Lollipop-based ROM from OnePlus in a matter of days, and OnePlus will continues its sojourn into the wilderness of the subcontinent.
Bear in mind that OxygenOS is primarily designed as a way to maintain OnePlus’ presence in India, so if you manage to nab a One, it’ll still come with CyanogenMod, but the famed ROM is slated to start including SwiftKey baked in, so you get a freebie. However, there’s no reason to assume OxygenOS won’t be made available as an option if you so seek.
OxygenOS promises a very flat, very Material Design experience, and we’re excited to see how it all plays out. Hopefully the great battle for India is behind us.
