Android 5.0 Lollipop begins rolling out for Exynos-powered Galaxy S5

samsung galaxy s5 aa (15 of 36)

While Samsung isn’t known for being particularly fast when it comes to new OS updates, the Korean giant has been much more aggressive with its Lollipop rollout. We’ve already seen a number of devices start to receive the update in several markets across the globe, including the Galaxy S5. Up until now, the Galaxy S5 Lollipop update only applied to the Snapdragon variant, but no longer. Earlier today the Exynos powered Galaxy S5 SM-G900H began to see the update as well, starting with Kazakhstan.

While the rollout is pretty limited at the moment, this just goes to show how dedicated Samsung is to getting Lollipop out to as many folks as possible. As for what is new? First, there’s plenty of under the hood changes that come with Lollipop, such as switching to ART, a number of bug fixes (though several new bugs have been introduced as well…) and more. When it comes to front-facing features, TouchWiz masks a lot of the Lollipop changes (Material Design) that you’d see in a stock Android build but there’s still several noticeable tweaks including brighter colors, an updated multitasking interface, a new lock screen and the priority system for Lollipop.

Again, right now the Exynos update is only available in one region, though it’s only a matter of time before the update becomes available to others either through Samsung Kies, an OTA or both methods. To check for the OTA, you can always head to Settings> System> About Device> Software Update.

So how about it, any Exynos-based Galaxy S5 owners see Android 5.0 on their devices yet? If so, what region are you in and what do you think of the experience so far?

HTC Calls Out Apple and Samsung in New Rap Video ‘Hold the Crown’ [iOS Blog]

HTC last week published a video to its YouTube channel, HTCAmerica, which satirizes HTC’s biggest competitors – namely Apple and Samsung – with a song sung by rapper Greg Carr, known as “Doc G.”

The video, fully titled “Doc G’s HTC Anthem “Hold the Crown” w/ David Bruce,” centers around the rapper interacting with various people dressed up as smartphones from the various companies. Carr, known mainly for his time in the group P.M. Dawn, is joined for a majority of the video by HTC’s own David Bruce.

The song’s lyrics (via Engadget) include jokes about everything from Apple’s inferior performance and sound (“Your chip is slower, But you’ll never touch our BoomSound”) to Samsung’s “overrated” Galaxy (“More than a few clowns stole what we originated, We own the universe, your Galaxy is overrated”). It also includes general riffs on HTC’s most popular features like Extreme Power Saving Mode and references to HTC CEO Peter Chou.

The company also released an interview on the same YouTube channel in which Bruce questions Carr about various topics ranging from his time with HTC products to his thoughts on the competition. During it, the rapper states he’s been “a huge HTC supporter for years,” and believes HTC has “the best phones created.”

Man in charge of the Galaxy S 6 marketing efforts has left Samsung

Samsung_Next_big_thing_Ad_GS3

Back in December, Samsung removed a number of key executives after a not so terrific year. One of the new hires was Kim Seok-pil, who became the head of strategic marketing, which meant he was in charge of all marketing efforts for the Galaxy S 6. Unfortunately he has left Samsung due to health issues.

How this will impact the Galaxy S 6 launch is unknown, but since we are less than a month away from the unveiling, I suspect not so much since most of the marketing would already be set in motion. If anything, the future could prove to be more critical if Mr. Kim was worth his weight in gold. Samsung has already announced Lee Sang-chul as his replacement. He is currently in charge of Samsung’s Russia operations.

It’s very possible that Mr. Kim could come back to the company at a later time.

OnePlus teases OxygenOS ahead of official unveiling

oneplus_oxygenos_picture1

OnePlus has never been able to completely hold in a secret, frequently dropping hints and teases ahead of official releases. Not making any exceptions, OnePlus brings us a quick taste of their newest Android ROM: OxygenOS.

OxygenOS is expected to have an official reveal on February 12th.

Between OnePlus dropping the Cyanogen branding from the back of its latest products and the rift created by Cyanogen signing an exclusivity contract with Micromax, the writing is on the wall that the two companies have all but divorced each other.

OnePlus announced that they were designing a new ROM overlay last month. The name, OxygenOS, was selected from the winning participant of a community contest held in this past December.  The ROM is expected to provide users a very stock-Android experience with flat and flashy colors.

OnePlus also teased a short YouTube video showing off some Lollipop love on their device, which you can view below.

Twitter’s ads are headed to other apps

Well, that didn’t take long. A few weeks after reports circulated about Twitter placing ads outside of its app, the 140-character social network officially announced its plans to do just that. Today, the company outed the “first partnerships to syndicate Promoted Tweets outside of Twitter,” and those deals are in place with Flipboard and Yahoo Japan. ESPN was also mentioned in early rumblings, but there’s no indication that the sports broadcaster has signed on just yet. For now, the ads… er, Promoted Tweets will take on the appearance of other Flipboard content, and if you’re itchin’ for an early look, there’s an example on the other side of the break.
