Can’t watch the Super Bowl? Use these Android apps instead

Whether you’re just “in it for the commercials” or you’re cheering on a team, you can watch from mobile if you have to

We can’t all be comfortably seated in the best spot in the living room with a huge plate of wings and a threatening glare toward anyone who dares to even think about touching the remote control this Sunday night. For reasons passing understanding, Super Bowl Sunday is not a national holiday yet. As a result, you may have obligations that put you somewhere that doesn’t have the big game playing. The good news is there are mobile options if you’re able to watch. The bad news is, if you want to watch live, there’s not a lot of them.

MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team unveils the new F1 W06 Hybrid Silver Arrow

The BlackBerry sponsored MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team ended the 2014 season on top with 16 wins, 18 pole positions, 12 fastest laps and 31 podium finishes throughout the 2014 season between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg plus, eleven one-two wins in a single season which, broke the previous record put in place by McLaren in 1988.

Lewis Hamilton won the first ever Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix at the Sochi Autodrom that pretty much guaranteed the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team winning the F1 Constructors’ Championship for Mercedes-Benz, and finally, Lewis Hamilton claimed the FIA Formula One World Drivers’ Championship trophy for the second time in his career.

Now, it’s time to get back to work and as such, the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has now unveiled its 2015 Formula One World Championship challenger, the F1 W06 Hybrid, ahead of the first day of pre-season testing at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. Pocket ghost detector may be as hard to find as its targets

GhostArk

Let’s get this out of the way: ghost detection is based on junk science. It’s trying to prove something that’s unprovable almost by definition, using theories that have little connection to the real world. But if you are going to chase phantoms, you might as well have the best technology at your disposal, right? GhostArk certainly thinks so. It’s developing a pocketable ghost detector that supposedly has everything you need to track down supernatural beings, including an electromagnetic field meter, high-sensitivity microphones, radio frequency sweeping and sensors for both atmospheric pressure and temperature. Think of it as an audio recorder on steroids — you can even add white noise to “bolster the spirits’ strength.” It’s a clever concept, even if none of its findings would stand up under academic scrutiny.

The scientific method isn’t this gadget’s only nemesis, though. There’s also a question of whether or not it’ll become a tangible product, at least in a reasonable time frame. GhostArk wants to ship its haunt-hunting machine this summer, but the only public details at the moment are 3D models and a batch of vague testing claims. For now, it’s about as imaginary as the ghosts it’s meant to track down. We’ve reached out to the company to get a sense of its progress, and we’ll let you know if there’s more to share. Either way, you’ll probably want to think carefully about shelling out $199 ($249 at retail) for a device that’s unlikely to ever live up to its billing — arguably, you’d get more mileage out of a Ghostbusters model car.

Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA hitting Samsung Galaxy S5 in Australia now

Android Lollipop with Google logo

One of our lucky readers in Australia woke up this morning to a little surprise from Samsung, Android 5.0 Lollipop has landed on his Galaxy S5.

We’ve seen the latest version of Android roll out to the same device in other markets around the globe. Starting in Poland it moved across Europe, but it is now time for the land down under to have their turn. Please keep in mind that we can’t be sure if this is a full roll out for all Galaxy S5 users in Australia, but where there is one, there is sure to be more.

If you have not been reading along the included upgrades to the Samsung Galaxy S5 with Android 5.0 Lollipop, you have a few improvements and changes to look forward to. Aside from the new version of Android, with all of its Material Design visuals, and a handful of new Android Lollipop features, look for a change in your lock screen, borrowed from the Note 4.

In addition, Samsung has updated the driver for the fingerprint sensor in your S5, the result, as confirmed by our reader, is drastically improved performance when scanning your fingerprint.

Any other Australians out there seeing Android 5.0 Lollipop for their Samsung Galaxy S5 this morning?

Thanks to Marcus for the tip.

CyanogenMod Nightlies

CyanogenMod 12 nightlies black boot animation

The white boot animation has only been around for a short time, as has the availability of CM 12 nightlies itself. These are only growing pains toward the final release of CyanogenMod 12 stable. Keep in mind, of course, that Cyanogen is in works to change things up for their popular custom ROM, having recently sworn off of Google’s Android stream.

There is even word that Microsoft is working with Cyanogen. We’ve taken the time to discuss this all in our Friday Debate this past Friday, and stay tuned with us later today, we’ll be headed to our new Friday Debate Podcast with the same topic.

Which boot animation for CyanogenMod 12 nightlies did you prefer?

Voice calling finally starting to appear for some WhatsApp users

whatsapp_calling_feature_01Many users have been anticipating WhatsApp to finally bring voice calling to its application sometime in 2015, and it looks like the feature is beginning to roll out to some users. The calling, like WhatsApp messaging, uses an internet connection to place a phone call instead of relying exclusively on a carrier’s network to handle the call.

whatsapp_calling_feature_02

The updated calling interface isn’t available to everyone, but according to some Reddit users, if you already have the update you can get another person in on the voice calling action by placing a call to them, forcing the interface update. WhatsApp hasn’t made anything official just yet, so this is all pure speculation and trial and error.
Regardless, if you’ve been wanting voice calling through the app, you shouldn’t have to wait too much longer. If some users are seeing it, we can probably expect a massive launch for everyone in the near future.
