Fuhu announces nabi Square HD, 4K action cam for your children

The folks behind the nabi Tablet for kids has been busy – their latest product is a 4K action cam, but just like the tablet, this camera is built for your children. Introducing the Fuhu Inc. nabi Square HD.

The nabi Square HD is a 4K action camera that is, as the name suggests, a cube of a device that has been built to withstand the rugged lifestyle of your active children, capturing it all in 4K video. Apple’s market share continues to rise across Europe, US and China

A new report from Kantar Worldpanel shows that iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales continued at a brisk pace leading up to November 2014. The new iPhones accounted for 47.4 percent of smartphone sales in the US, an increase of 4.3 percent from the same time in 2013. The iPhone 6 was recorded as the best-selling smartphone three months in a row, achieving a market share of 19 percent. Verizon and AT&T made up 57 percent of iOS sales during this time.

A similar growth was witnessed in Great Britain as well:

Apple’s market share gain, triggered by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch, continued into November when it reached 42.5% of British sales for a growth of 12.2 percentage points year-on-year mainly at the expense of Android.

Across Europe (Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain), Android remained the dominant OS with a market share of 69.9%, although this is 3.2 percentage points lower than the same period in 2013. “Great Britain saw the strongest share decline for Android at 6.7 percentage points”, said Dominic Sunnebo, strategic insight director at Kantar Worldpanel ComTech Europe.

Apple saw a minor increase in its market share in China, which is now at 18.1 percent. China Mobile continues to be the top carrier in the country, accounting for 63 percent of Apple’s overall sales.

Mad Catz Shipping out L.Y.N.X. Controller

L.Y.N.X., the cutting edge hybrid controller is now officially on sale online and shipping out as of today. The controller is $300 and can go from a tablet stand to a compact shape for storing in your front shirt pocket in just a few simple steps. The controller should work with a PC, set-top box, or phone for all of your gaming needs. As far as aesthetics go, the L.Y.N.X. has a menacing beauty to it that almost demands being held.

The controller is a response to the growth in the mobile gaming industry and the predicted explosion to come in 2015. Mad Catz had this to say about the release: “We believe the L.Y.N.X. represents a generational leap in mobile game controllers. Today, gaming is commonly format agnostic, with most of us playing games across a variety of platforms and locations. The L.Y.N.X. is designed to offer a premium gaming experience in almost any situation.”

The L.Y.N.X. will debut at CES this week and can be seen via appointment at the Mad Catz suite.

Hangouts for iOS now shows your Google Voice messages

If you rely on your iPhone for Google Voice, Hangouts just became much, much more useful. As on Android, the messaging app’s iOS version now shows your Google Voice texts and voicemail — you won’t have to switch apps just because you’re embroiled in an online conversation. There are a few tangible upgrades even if you live well outside of Google Voice’s service area, for that matter. You now get smart suggestions for sharing your location when it’s relevant, and you can set status messages if you’re eager to let everyone know what you’re doing. All told, it’s easily worth swinging by the App Store for an update.

TCL to put Palm back in our hands

As rumored last week TCL, the parent company behind Alcatel Onetouch, has announced that it is to resurrect the Palm brand and that will remain a truly Californian, Silicon Valley, based company.

TCL Communication is a Chinese electronics giant that makes a variety of products including smartphones (under the Alcatel Onetouch brand) and TVs. Actually TCL is the third largest TV manufacturer in the world after Samsung and LG. TCL has acquired the Palm brand, as well as all the trademarks and logos, from HP and it now plans to revive the name that has long been associated with innovation and a pioneering spirit, especially in the early days of mobile tech.

The largest scale crowd-sourced project ever seen in the industry.

However there is a catch, actually quite a good one. TCL doesn’t just want to re-badge its Alcatel Onetouch phones and start churning out Palm devices. TCL wants to rebuild the brand and hopefully capture some of its former glory. To do that TCL has decided that the Palm community should play a key role in the re-building of the brand. As TCL puts it, to make it “the largest scale crowd-sourced project ever seen in the industry.”

TCL aren’t just looking for ideas about the next Palm device, but rather to find new ways to “deliver absolute breakthrough innovations in Technology, Design, User Experience, Eco-system, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Business Models.”

In whatever form Palm is revived, TCL is confident that it will get the very best support that the company can offer, including access to TCL’s 5000 engineers from its 7 R&D centers around the world, and the use of its mobile devices manufacturing facility.

The Palm brand has had a rough time ever since the failing company was bought by HP in 2010. Following the disastrous reception of the HP TouchPad (which used Palm’s WebOS), HP cancelled all of its Palm and WebOS products. Then in 2013 HP sold its WebOS team, along with a license to the WebOS source code and underlying patents, to LG Electronics for use in its Smart TVs.

The Eye Tribe Tracker lets you control your tablet with your eyes

Today at CES, we stumbled into The Eye Tribe (theeyetribe.com). Their solution enables eye control on mobile devices. It sounds very cool, but it’s a lot better to see it in action. They had a couple of Windows tablets rigged with The Eye Tribe Tracker, so we asked them to give us a demo in front of the camera. Go watch the video!

The new Nabi kid-friendly Android tablets are seriously huge

In addition to an action-cam for adventurous kids, Fuhu has announced new Big Tab options at CES — and they’re so huge, they dwarf the 24-inch model launched in 2014. These latest entries to the Big Tab lineup include 42-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch models, so they’re definitely not something you’d hold in your hand to watch Netflix or check your emails on. Fuhu envisions these tablets to be used in kitchens and living rooms for interactive activities or as smart TVs, as they’re touchscreen displays with access to Google Play. The 55- and the 65-inch ones even have full ultra HD resolution, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC. According to USA Today, these huge tablets will hit the market in the second half of 2015, with the cheapest option priced at $699. Obviously, the most expensive one will cost you quite a bit: $3,999 for the 65-inch 4K UHD model.

Google TV officially shutting down, Android TV to reign the living room

Early adopters of Google’s living room initiative may now be in possession of obsolete hardware. Google is officially focusing its living room team on the newer Android TV, putting a freeze on further Google TV development themselves, and pulling the developer tools that other developers have relied upon to build their apps.

This news comes quietly out of a Google+ post from the Google TV and Android TV teams on the Google TV Developers Google+ page. Their reasoning is plain, Android TV is in full swing now, offering a superior experience for users – basically, the future is now, let’s live in it.

This news comes along with a ton of CES 2015 announcements, with many big names having announced adoption of Google’s new Android TV operating system. We already talked about Sony committing to bring Android TV to their 2015 line of Bravia smart TVs, but others are on deck as well.

What should you do with your old Google TV hardware? Don’t make any plans to throw it out the window just yet. Some of the devices are on track to receive an update to Android TV, bringing your hardware to the next level. Other devices, unfortunately, do not have what it takes to move forward, but rest assured that Google promises to do their part in keeping those devices running as they do today, to keep you connected with your favorite media sources and apps. Just don’t expect any new system updates, that’s all.

This move toward embedded Android TV is an exciting one for those of us shopping for a new television this year. This should be a very exciting progression for Google’s efforts as well. Google TV was decently supported by the industry, but, as evidenced today, it never garnered the level of success that many had hoped for.

If you are not in the market for a new television with Android TV on board, you can still get your hands on Android TV through the Nexus Player. Nexus Player is Google’s set-top box solution, the first consumer release Android TV device, if you do not count the ADT-1 that was handed out at Google I/O 2014.
