Automatic garbage bin promises to clean the oceans

Take a close look at the water in your local marina and you’ll probably shudder at the amount of waste floating around. You’d practically need a dedicated clean-up crew to make it safe, wouldn’t you? However, a pair of Australian surfers think they have a better way. Their crowdfunded Seabin promises to clean up marinas (and by extension, the ocean) through the one-two combo of a natural fiber garbage bin and an automated, above-the-water pump. It’s almost too simple a concept, but it seems to work — it sucks in all kinds of filth (including oil) and spits out clean water. You’d ideally leave a bunch of Seabins running at the dock all day, keeping the water relatively pristine.

Unlike a lot of crowdfunding projects, you probably won’t be backing this expecting a Seabin in return. It’ll require a hefty $3,825 pledge to get the gadget if and when it arrives in November 2016. With that said, it could still be worth chipping in a more modest amount. In addition to getting perks like clothing and prints, you’re getting the ball rolling on a device that could both improve immediate seaside conditions and fight ocean pollution as a whole.

Deranged magnet shoes claim to let you walk on the moon

It’s one of those ideas that seems inspired at 3am after several beverages too many, but insane in the cold, harsh light of the following morning. Look, yeah, why not create a shoe that’s got two sets of repelling magnets pointed at each other, so that the wearer will feel, right, as if they’re floating on air, yeah? That’s the concept behind 2016 MoonWalker, an Indiegogo campaign for shoes that claim to make you feel as if you’re defying gravity with every step.

It’s a simple enough idea: sandwiched between the sole and the upper are two layers of neodymium magnets with the north poles facing each other. As such, the downward force of your steps would be cushioned and you’ll feel as if you’re wandering around in low gravity, or something. If the claims are to be believed, the sensation is “indescribable” and will help you “rediscover the joy of walking.” In addition, the shoes will be lined with Tyvek and the sole will be made of memory foam.

The company says that the footwear will launch in two varieties: a standard model, as well as one where part of the sole will have a customizable e-ink display. Using the companion app, users of the MoonWalker V2 would be able to display messages along the side of their shoe, and early birds can pick a pair up for as little as $150. That is, of course, assuming two things: firstly, that the whole thing isn’t just a big ol’ pile of flim-flam, and secondly, that anyone would want to own such an ugly-ass pair of kicks.

Microsoft’s Xiaoice AI becomes the first live TV weather host

Even though machines can now generate clickbait headlines and automatically write earthquake news reports in the name of journalism, live television has remained shielded from artificial intelligence. That hasn’t stopped Microsoft from trying to influence proceedings with its machine learning software, known as Xiaoice (or Little Bing), which became the first AI robot to host a segment on live TV last week.

The Chinese live program, “Morning News” introduced Xiaoice as a trainee anchor last Tuesday, where it took charge of the daily weather report. Microsoft says it calls upon smart cloud technologies and big data to learn about and interpret weather readings and then deliver reports with her “unique artificial intelligent style of emotional comments.” The AI is also more human-like than any other system of its kind, scoring 4.32 out of 5 in linguistic naturalness tests. For comparison, humans have an average score of 4.76.

Before it got its new gig on Chinese TV, Xiaoice started life as an advanced personal assistant for messaging apps Line and WeChat and social networking service Weibo. On Line, the bot appeared as a young character called Rinna, who would reply to users’ questions with human-like understanding and an abundance of emoji.

For Microsoft, Xiaoice is about proving that AI concepts can be made available to everyone, rather than serving in “sci-tech concepts.” While the bot capable of hosting on its own, its creators see it playing an important role in working alongside presenters, allowing it to “bring more bliss to human beings.”

A new patent filed with the US Patent & Trademark Office reveals one potential use which is a smartphone recognising the smart ring and then displaying a contextually-aware menu which shows functions set in the ring as well as icons showing other functions that the ring can control. The diagram shows the other icons could include the TV, radio, blinds, lights and any other connected devices in your smart home.

Samsung isn’t the first to delve into smart rings, with the likes of Apple, Microsoft and Google all exploring the area in a series of patent filings. What could make Samsung’s smart ring unique is that it may connect with social networks such as Facebook which could open a series of endless possibilities.

Like plenty of other patent filings, this may prove to be nothing for many years yet but as Samsung’s Gear S2 shows with its unique rotating bezel, somethings are worth the wait. What will Samsung’s eventual Smart Ring be able to do, if it is even released? Let us know what you’d like to see in the comments below!

‘Tilt’ is a new augmented reality game for Android Wear smartwatches

tilt-app-logo

A new augmented reality game for Android Wear recently launched. Developer 13 App Design calls the app Tilt and bills it as “the first of its kind augmented reality app for Android Wear smartwatches.”

To play, users view their Android Wear watch through their phone to display the game. Once the game is displayed, users tilt their smartwatch up and down and side to side to roll the sphere in order to pick up boxes without falling off.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Tilt is ad free and has no in-app purchases. It’s also worth noting that the game, in its current state, is a proof of concept, demoing the possibilities of augmented reality on Android Wear smartwatches.

The app’s description says an expanded version with more levels and features will be released, but does not say when.

Microsoft: We need a phone as good as the Surface line

Speaking to Twit’s Windows Weekly show, Microsoft’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Chris Capossela has admitted that the company’s latest Windows Phones are not enough to reverse the ailing platform’s fortunes. Describing the flagship Lumia 950 as simply “solid,” he told host Leo Laporte and Microsoft journalists Mary Jo Foley and Paul Thurrott that the company has a lot more work to do before it can persuade people to “move from an iPhone to one of [Microsoft’s] phones.”

Capossela drew comparison to the company’s successful Surface program, which caught the public’s imagination despite “a bunch of early misfires.” He believes Microsoft needs “some sort of spiritual equivalent on the phone side that doesn’t just feel like a phone for people that love Windows.” Some are taking this to mean that Microsoft is working on a “breakthrough Surface phone.” In reality, given the context of a year-in-review podcast, it’s more likely Capossela is really just noting the sort of thing that Microsoft needs to do — create a unique device that appeals to a broad number of people. “We need time to actually build that,” he added.

The CMO also spoke about the importance of attracting the younger generation to the platform. “You need Snapchat, let’s face it,” retorted host Leo Laporte, “That’s all you really need if you want a 15-year-old.” The social app is not available on Windows Phone.

“You need Snapchat, you need Instagram … you need Uber, gotta have it. There’s 10-15 apps that you just have to have on the phone,” Capossela concurred. It’s clear Microsoft believes it has to get the hardware and OS right before customers — and developers — will flock to Windows Phone.

The full Windows Weekly episode is available on the show’s site, and the relevant segment starts at around the 38:30 mark.
