Take This is a non-profit that educates and supports those with depression, anxiety and other mental health issues, with a focus on the video game community. Starting today at 12PM ET, Take This hits Twitch for a two-day livestream starring BioShock creator Ken Levine, popular gaming critic Jim Sterling, Tom Clancy’s son and game developer Thom Clancy, and other famous figures of the industry. Donate during the stream for a chance to win sweet gaming swag, including a signed Octodad poster, an IGN gift pack, a remote-controlled replica of Claptrap from Borderlands or a custom Fallout 4 Xbox One.

The livestream benefits the Take This Scholarship Fund, which helps pay for mental health care for those who can’t afford it.

Video game fans may have heard of Take This while walking the halls of North American PAX conventions: The organization runs the AFK Room, a quiet space open to any attendee who needs a break from the crowds or a safe place to talk about mental health problems. On top of the AFK Room, Take This regularly provides resources aimed at reducing the stigma of mental illness.

The first taste of Orphan Black Season 4 is an eye-opener

As we sit in the no man’s land between holidays, let us take a moment to quietly contemplate what the actual eff is going on with the eye in this new Orphan Black teaser trailer. Will the Clone Club face some decidedly augmented foes? Is it a metaphor for a heightened sense of paranoia and distrust? Do the folks from Topside — who rose to some prominence this past season — have anything to do with it?

We’ll have to wait until April to find out, but until then, check out the teaser and marvel at how well the BBC says so much and so little about season 4 at the same time:

“Season four of the drama will see leader-of-the-pack, Sarah, reluctantly return home from her Icelandic hideout to track down an elusive and mysterious ally tied to the clone who started it all – Beth Childs. Sarah will follow Beth’s footsteps into a dangerous relationship with a potent new enemy, heading in a horrifying new direction. Under constant pressure to protect the sisterhood and keep everyone safe, Sarah’s old habits begin to resurface. As the close-knit sisters are pulled in disparate directions, Sarah finds herself estranged from the loving relationships that changed her for the better.”

Hyundai Sonata will finally get CarPlay in early 2016

Hyundai began teasing Apple’s CarPlay software for its vehicles way back in 2014, but failed to deliver it as promised in the 2015 Sonata. Now, the automaker will finally make Cupertino’s in-car system available during the first quarter of 2016. What’s more, it won’t be a free upgrade. Hyundai says that Sonata owners will need to purchase an SD card in order to employ CarPlay inside their vehicles. Originally, the company said the software would be available for free in 2015 and 2015 Sonata models outfitted the requisite infotainment setup. What’s more, Hyundai already offers Android Auto to its customers free of charge. When CarPlay arrives for Sonata owners, the Hyundai will join the likes of Chevrolet and Honda that already offer the software inside vehicles.

Apple Files Trademarks for Beats 2, 3, 4, and 5 Radio Stations

Apple filed trademark applications for the word marks B2, B3, B4, and B5 with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in November, including the matching marks Beats Two, Beats Three, Beats Four, and Beats Five, as spotted by French website Consomac [Google Translate]. The applications are currently pending review.

Beats-1-2-3-4-5

All four trademark applications are assigned to “Beats Electronics, LLC,” have the same logo that Apple uses for its Beats 1 radio station, and are listed under broadcasting- and streaming music-related categories, indicating that Apple could be planning an expansion of its Beats radio network in the future.

Goods and Services: broadcasting and transmission of voice, data, images, music, audio, video, multimedia, television, and radio by means of telecommunications networks; broadcast and transmission of streamed music, audio, video, and multimedia content by means of telecommunications networks; matching users for the transfer of music, audio, video, and multimedia by means of telecommunications networks; providing access to websites, databases, electronic bulletin boards, on-line forums, directories, music, and video and audio programs

Apple’s licensing terms with record labels reportedly give the company permission to create up to five additional radio stations like Beats 1 without needing to negotiate new terms. Apple could potentially launch additional Beats stations around the world, adding DJs in other countries or launching stations with a specific focus or genre.

MacRumors previously discovered that Apple has registered domains such as beats2.com.cn, beats2.hk, and beats4.com.ru in various countries around the world. Beats 1 is broadcast worldwide, but in the future, Apple may wish to offer stations that cater to different languages and musical preferences around the world.

Beats 1 is broadcast in over 100 countries and has been on air since Apple Music launched on June 30. Apple’s 24/7 live global radio station, anchored by renowned DJs Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden and Julie Adenuga, provides a mix of the latest music, guest interviews and more. Beats 1 can be streamed through Apple Music and iTunes.

Huawei KIW-AL20 passes through TENAA

huawei_logo_june2015_event_TA

An unannounced Huawei smartphone just passed through China’s official certification database, TENAA. According to information included in the filing, the handset carries the model number KIW-AL20, which is believed to be assigned to either a high-end variant of the Honor 5X or the Honor 7 Plus, and in view of the unit’s dual-SIM compatibility, we can infer that it’s headed to the Asian market.

The documentation also reveals that the device is set to pack a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a 1.5GHz octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 13MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP selfie shooter and  a 3,300mAh battery. If the TECCM device render that accompanies the spec sheet is anything to go by, it would appear that the unit will feature a fingerprint scanner, too.

Huawei-TENAA-listing
Huawei-TENAA-listing-1

As for the dimensions, the KIW-AL20 measures exactly 151.3 × 76.3 × 8.15 mm and weighs in at a hefty 158g. These measurements, coupled with the images above, lead us to suspect that the handset will sport an aluminium shell with a glass front. Although, it’s perfectly possible that Huawei is planning to use a durable plastic with an aluminium-like finish.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any information with regards to when the KIW-AL20 is likely to be announced, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated with the all latest news on the handset as and when it breaks. In the meantime, hit the source link below to view the full certification certificate over on TENAA’s website.

Honor 7 is getting Marshmallow in India, but you will have to register to get it

huawei-honor-7-review-4

Huawei boasts world-class hardware design, but it still has a way to go when it comes to software. The good news is Huawei is working on improving its software experience, at least when it comes to timely and consistent updates.

After launching a Marshmallow beta program in several countries, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has now commenced the Android 6.0 rollout for the Honor 7 in India. There’s a slight catch: users who want a fast update need to request it via an online form available here. Users will have to enter their device’s IMEI number, current software vision, email address and phone number.

Android 6.0 marshmallow logo DSC_0126See also: Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates roundup – December 18, 201589

Provided this info is entered correctly, the OTA update will hit the registered device within 48 hours. This is definitely a novel way to handle OTAs – a dedicated app would have been much easier for users – but it’s good to see that Honor is trying to appease early adopters who want new features as soon as possible.

It’s possible that Honor will use this enrollment method in other countries as well, though for now the update appears to be available in India only.

The Honor 7 launched in India in October. In our review, Krystal loved the phone’s great battery life, camera, display, and fast fingerprint scanner. Hopefully, the Marshmallow update will help with the weak points of the device – inconsistent gaming performance and a subpar user interface.

Dual-SIM Asus ZenFone Go 4.5 launched for Rs. 5,299 ($80)

Asus Zenfone Go 4.5

Cost effective smartphones have become big business in India and Asus has just announced its new ZenFone Go 4.5 to cater to this growing market. Priced at just Rs. 5,299 (USD 80), this handset certainly won’t break the bank, but it does have one or two compromises, as you would expect.

As the name implies, the new ZenFone Go 4.5 features a 4.5-inch display which packs a resolution of 854 x 480. The handset is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6580M, which is built from four low power Cortex-A7 CPU cores. The phone also features just 1GB of RAM, so performance is going to be hit and miss. The handset comes with 8GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for an additional 64GB. Customers will also be given 100GB of free Google Drive storage for two years and 5GB of free storage for a lifetime from Asus.

Other hardware specifications include a 5 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel (VGA) front facing camera, and Asus’ Zen UI 2.0 which is built on Android 5.1 Lollipop. There’s also a rather small 1,600mAh battery, Wi-Fi, and dual-SIM support, but no 4G LTE connectivity. This 4.5-inch model is priced slightly cheaper than the 5-inch ZenFone Go that launched earlier in the year.

For its price, the Asus ZenFone Go 4.5 offers a very affordable introduction to the smartphone experience and should help Asus build a bigger portfolio in the low-cost market. The handset will be manufactured in black, blue, pink and white color options and is available to purchase from Flipkart starting today.

New Xiaomi device stops by China’s TENAA, possibly the Redmi 3

Xiaomi Redmi 3 TENAA

Xiaomi has been producing some really great budget-friendly hardware over the past year or so. Specifically, Xiaomi’s Redmi line of smartphones are some of the more popular budget options available from the China-based smartphone maker, and it looks like we’re getting a pretty good glimpse at the next mobile device in this line.

A new Xiaomi device has just been spotted in TENAA, China’s certification center. What’s rumored to be the successor to the Xiaomi Redmi 2 from last January, this new device will sport a 5.0-inch TFT display with 1280 x 720 resolution. It will also be powered by an octa-core 1.5GHz processor, 2 gigabytes of RAM and have 16GB of internal storage with microSD card expansion up to 128GB. It’ll also likely come with a 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, measure 139.3 × 69.6 × 8.5mm and weigh 143 grams. Folks who are worried about running the latest version of Android will probably be disappointed here, as the device is set to launch with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. It will come in three color variants: Silver, Gray and Gold.

The TENAA listing pegs this new device with model name Mi 2015811. While the Mi 2015811 looks to be made of metal in these photos, it’s entirely possible that it will actually be made of plastic in order to achieve a cheaper price point.

If this is in fact the Redmi 3, we’re really looking forward to what it has to offer. The Redmi 2 launched with lesser specifications pretty much across the board, and also came with a plastic build and a small $110 price point. We haven’t heard anything official from Xiaomi quite yet, but we’ll let you know when we learn more.
