HTC launches Desire 828 with 13MP OIS camera, 4G LTE and dual SIM at $300 in India

HTC has finally revealed the price of its latest mid-ranger beast, the Desire 828, which will be available for sale via Indian online retailer Flipkart for Rs. 19,990 (roughly USD 299). The 4G LTE-capable handset comes preloaded with Sense 7 UI based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

The Taiwanese company had recently announced the One A9 in India, which will be available exclusively on Snapdeal for Rs. 29,990 (an equivalent of USD 434).

Going on sale from December 14, the latest Desire device features a 5.5-inch IPS display with 1080p resolution and a respectable pixel density of 401 ppi. It is powered by an 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor and 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal memory.

The USP of the device, however, could be its 13-megapixel rear-facing snapper that comes with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), BSI sensor, autofocus and LED flash. It even has a 4-UltraPixel front facing camera to take those high-quality selfies and video calls. The HTC Desire 828 has two 4G LTE-compatible SIM card slots. It houses a 2,800 mAh battery and is available in Dark Grey and Pearl White colors.

PopKey’s keyboard now adds GIFs to Twitter and Slack

After Apple added third-party keyboard support to iOS, developers were quick to whip up keyboards that made adding a GIF to iMessages a breeze. Now PopKey for iOS is adding the ability to drop GIFs on Twitter, Slack, GroupMe and others directly from its keyboard. If you love adding GIFs to most of your communication services, it might be worth checking out.

PopKey co-founder Adrian Salamunovic told Engadget that the initial app focused on iMessage because “at the beginning we didn’t want it to be sloppy trying to do everything like a Swiss Army knife.”

When composing a message, just tap on the app selector drop down and pick your service of choice. The keyboard will create the preferred link for the service for you to paste and you’re in business.

Bloomberg: Swatch is hoarding smartwatch patents

We’ve snarked at Swatch for waiting forever to release a smartwatch, only for the finished article to be a regular watch with an NFC chip beneath the dial. Bloomberg Business believes that the Swiss firm is playing the long game by quietly hoarding a pile of (173) patents related to the technology. The news agency has dug deep into the paperwork to learn that Swatch holds rights to plenty of useful concepts including proximity sensors and data-transmitting batteries. Sources claim that the watchmaker has enough IP in its back pocket to make a device on its own, unlike TAG Heuer, which had to partner with Intel.

If we’ve learned anything from the smartphone wars, it’s that owning the intellectual property to a device can be more lucrative than the device itself. Microsoft, for instance, has a filing cabinet of phone patents that actually made it more money (in licensing payments from Android manufacturers) than it did selling the Xbox. By keeping all of this know-how in its back pocket, it’ll be able to make a bucket of cash from its rivals, as well as have an easier time of things if it does, eventually, decide to join the race.

Google releases Android 6.0.1 factory images and binaries for the Pixel C

pixel c first look aa (4 of 12)

Earlier this week, Google released the Pixel C tablet to the world by making it available for purchase on the Google Store. Today, the company released Android 6.0.1 factory images and binaries for their new gadget.

Google has released two Android 6.0.1 factory images for the Pixel C, carrying build numbers MXB48J and MXB48K respectively, with “ryu” being the codename for Pixel C’s software branch. These packages have arrived only 4 days after Google released the latest factory images for the Nexus lineup. We have already talked about the new features in Android 6.0.1 in a previous post.

Using these factory images, users can flash their Pixel C back to stock in case they screw up while toying with the device’s software. Of course, for that to happen, there needs to be custom ROMs for the Pixel C in the first place. Google’s taken care of that as well by releasing the proprietary binaries, codenamed “dragon”, as well. This bit of news is sure to delight ROM developers.

The Pixel C is Google’s take on a convertible device, which works as a tablet when you want to use the device for media consumption and entertainment, and as a laptop once you dock the tablet on the keyboard accessory (sold separately) that can be used for work.

Google isn’t the only company that’s trying to compete with the Microsoft Surface Pro line – HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus all offer similar convertible devices to consumers, all of them running on Windows OS. There’s also the Apple iPad Pro that’s based on iOS 9. Meanwhile, the Pixel C runs on Android OS, although there is a report suggesting that Google originally tested Chrome OS on the Pixel C.

Getting back to today’s story, you can find the download links to the Pixel C factory images and binaries down below.

Pepper the robot’s latest job is in a train station

When it’s not vaguely talking up Nescafe coffee or or telling you about a Japanese phone carrier’s excellent data packages, Pepper the robot is in France, working at a train station. Starting this month in three stations, Aldebaran’s humanoid ‘bot will welcome guests both departing and arriving, offering train timetable information, as well as local tourist information. Three of the wide-eyed automatons will help staff French train stations for three months, ending mid-March 2016 when the French National Railway Company (SNCF) will decide whether to install Peppers in other regional stations. The robot will even (attempt to) collect those customer satisfaction surveys that we all loathe. But when it’s administered by a robot, perhaps we’d be more likely to respond.

Google’s Verily has its own robot-surgery spinoff

It hasn’t even been a week since Verily became an official Alphabet entity, and it’s already announcing its own spinoff. The former Google X Labs Life Sciences division has collaborated with Johnson & Johnson to give rise to a new company called “Verb Surgical.” J&J’s press release didn’t mention any specific project, but from what we can tell, it’s developing robotic technologies for the operating room:

The PR says:

In the coming years, Verb Surgical aims to develop a comprehensive surgical solutions platform that will incorporate leading-edge robotic capabilities and best-in-class medical device technology for operating room professionals. The goal of Verb Surgical is to develop these new technologies in partnership with surgeons and hospitals to enable better patient outcomes, improve access to minimally invasive surgery, and achieve greater hospital efficiency.

According to Wired, Verb has already hired over a hundred people and will operate out of Mountain View, just like its parent corporation. Verily CEO Andrew Conrad told the publication that Verb Surgical is the first company it launched with a partner. And since the spinoff did say that it intends to work with more companies outside of Alphabet, it may not be the last.

Fallout Shelter update adds pets, dweller eviction and Overseer options

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

The hype for Fallout Shelter has well and truly died down now that Fallout 4 has been released for consoles and PC, but that doesn’t mean Bethesda is content to let the mobile game go without updates. While there hasn’t been a sizeable update to the game since launch, that’s all changed with the latest Fallout Shelter update which has enough content and improvements to at least warrant another attempt at being an Overseer of a fledgling Vault. According to the notes on the Play Store page, the game has been updated with pets, which add to the happiness of your Vault dwellers, and if there are dwellers that you don’t like, you can now evict them from your Vault. There are also some more minor improvements that avid players will notice such as new conversations between dwellers of opposite sex and a new option to sell everything in your inventory.

WHAT’S NEW

  • Vault-Tec research has shown that four legged companions can have a profound impact on Vault happiness and productivity. Introducing Pets!
  • Have a lazy or trouble causing dweller? Now you can evict dwellers and send them on their way.
  • Bored with the same pickup lines and conversations? Dwellers have finally learned some new ways to impress other dwellers and the opposite sex.
  • Overseers will love the new sell all options.
  • Dweller management improvements and new objectives.

Despite being a free-to-play game, Fallout Shelter is remarkably playable without the need for forking out actual money, though it can get a little repetitive once you’ve worked out the secret to a self-sustaining Vault. If you’ve yet to try it out, or just want to download the update, we’ve got the Play Store link for you below:

Now that OnePlus 2 invites are gone, what’s next for OnePlus?

oneplus x first 48 hours aa (32 of 33)

When OnePlus first entered the smartphone market with the OnePlus One back in 2014 it caused quite a stir. The idea that consumers should “never settle” for low quality budget phones was a powerful one, especially when OnePlus backed it up with a “Flagship Killer” like the OnePlus One, which could go toe-to-toe with the top smartphones of the day on paper, but cost around half the price, starting at $300.

The invite-only system, was a clever way to manage production, ensuring that the fledgling manufacturer didn’t overproduce stock and end up in trouble. It also sprinkled some exclusive stardust on the OnePlus One. Tell people that they can’t have something and many of them will only want it more. It was an impressive start, but the idea that the OnePlus marketing department was a repository of genius was soon laid waste.

Fast-forward a year and a half and things aren’t looking so rosy for OnePlus anymore. What has gone wrong? And can OnePlus turn things around? What should the company do to save itself?

Ship more and ditch invites

The invite system has always been a bone of contention for OnePlus. It’s understandable that a newcomer to the scene with low margins would need a way to manage demand, but failure to strike while the iron is hot has probably cost OnePlus a lot of sales. It promised to sort things out for the OnePlus 2, claiming that invites would be easier to come by and handsets would ship faster.

In reality there were delays, even for the lucky few who managed to get an invite. The OnePlus 2 was delayed by a month for the U.S. and Canada. If OnePlus wants to stick around for the long haul, it definitely needs to ship more devices and ship them on time. No one likes waiting for a new phone, or having to scramble around to get an invite.

oneplus 2 vs oneplus one aa (6 of 27)

There are signs that OnePlus may be realizing this, as it scrapped the invite system starting December 5th, though that could also be down to disappointing sales figures. You’ll be able to buy a OnePlus 2 without an invite from now on, but the OnePlus X is still only available through the old system. It’s probably time OnePlus ditched it for good.

Pick the right target

The OnePlus 2 was described as a “Flagship Killer” when it clearly isn’t. There’s no doubt it is a very good phone for the $329 starting price (read our OnePlus 2 review for a closer look), but the lack of wireless charging, NFC, microSD expansion, and fast charging was disappointing. There have also been problems with the software. Look at phones like the Moto X Style and the ZTE Axon Pro, and you can see that OnePlus is starting to fall behind in this category.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The market has moved on. First time around people were willing to put up with some of the problems because the OnePlus One represented a real bargain, but the OnePlus 2 doesn’t really stand out from the crowd. Prices in general have come down. OnePlus has more competition now, and the OnePlus 2 is closer to the mid-range than the cutting edge.

OnePlus may understand it has to change direction slightly, and the OnePlus X could be a sign of things to come. The company is now trying to deflect attention away from the spec sheet it shouted so loudly about with its first phone. The X has real potential for people seeking a smaller device. It’s a very good-looking phone, and by using an older processor, OnePlus has managed to cut the price to $250. The OnePlus X is a well-designed phone, with excellent build quality for the price, but it’s definitely a mid-ranger.

Maybe OnePlus needs to drop the flagship killer pretensions and aim to boss the mid-range with quality at affordable prices.

Sort out the software

The OnePlus partnership with Cyanogen, to ship its phones with the popular Android custom ROM pre-installed, seemed like a smart play that would appeal to the target audience for OnePlus. And it seemed to work well in the beginning. Unfortunately, the licensing agreement obviously wasn’t studied hard enough and sales of the OnePlus One were temporarily halted in India after Micromax pointed out that it had exclusive rights to distribute Cyanogen-branded products in South Asia.

OnePlus switched to its own, lightweight OxygenOS, which isn’t far off stock Android, but it has taken time for the bugs to be worked out, and it’s not exactly feature-rich. It’s tough to produce good quality, reliable software, and it’s a completely different beast from hardware. OnePlus still has work to do to really nail it with OxygenOS.

You don’t really have to look far to find complaints about the customer support that OnePlus offers. A lot of people have had trouble with RMAs, even with obviously legitimate issues. It’s hard to calculate the cost of treating a customer shabbily, but you can expect them to badmouth you loudly and never buy your products again.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

OnePlus is far from the only smartphone manufacturer with questionable customer support, but it should really work on improving it. Dealing with a complaint well can seriously boost brand loyalty and reputation, something OnePlus could really do with.

Where’s the profit?

The biggest question mark still hanging over OnePlus concerns income. The company has admitted that its margins are razor thin, and it makes very little, if any, profit at all. It wanted to try and apply the Silicon Valley startup approach whereby it tries to create a good product and build a big user base, and then worries about how to generate profits down the line.

How long will its investors wait? Is it growing big enough, fast enough, to suggest that profits will follow? Much depends on how the OnePlus 2 and X sell. If they don’t draw in a big audience, then OnePlus surely won’t last much longer. How else is it going to make money? It’s not impossible for OnePlus to succeed, but it looks harder now than it did when the company first arrived on the scene.

HTC Vive pre-orders to kick off in February, launch by April

HTC Vive hands on

The virtual reality industry hasn’t really even kicked off yet, but consumer excitement for first generation products is already high. HTC has just announced that consumers will be able to pre-order its Vive headset in February 2016, with a release date scheduled for April.

While some consumers had been hoping to get their hands on the final product a little earlier, HTC states that it had decided to shift availability back a little to ensure the best possible end product. The company also wants to make sure that there’s immersive content and a leading distribution platform in place by the time the Vive lands in consumer hands.

HTC is already looking beyond the VR gaming market that is expected to drive early consumer adoption too. The company recently co-hosted a symposium with Professor Neil Martin, Chair of the Neurosurgery Department at UCLA, and is investigating the uses of virtual reality to help train medical students and to reduce dependency on and costs of using cadavers for dissection.

While we are edging closer to an exciting consumer level launch, HTC is also gearing up to unveil a next generation developer version of its VR headset. 7,000 additional developer kits will be distributed in early 2016 and the company will be showing off the new kit at its ‘Vive Unbound’ event in Beijing and at CES 2016 in Las Vegas.
