Junk technology: Why your penis pedometer is DOA

If all you want for Christmas is a penis pedometer, get ready to be disappointed.

NSFW Warning: This story may contain links to and descriptions or images of explicit sexual acts.

Last summer, British sex shop Bondara promised to disrupt your junk with Sexfit, a cock ring that doubles as a sexual activity tracker. It would record calories burned and thrusts per minute, vibrate for her pleasure and connect to social media. A press release with renderings of the device in brooding black and sultry purple reported prototypes were in development and the company hoped to begin testing in late 2014.

And the Internet went wild. At last count, our post had 911,676 page views.

Just shy of one year later, an Indiegogo campaign emerged with a slightly more egg-shaped device called Lovely that made a similar promise to enhance your pleasure and your prurient data gathering.

Again, the internet went wild. That post has pulled in 206,208 page views to date.

One year and four months after Bondara piqued our interest, however, neither the Sexfit nor the Lovely have wrapped around your shaft. So why are you still manually counting your pumps per minute?

According to a Bondara rep, the company put development on hold because “it is proving expensive and getting the right tech on the device is taking time.” Still, the company expects to launch in late 2016.

The quantified-self movement is already masturbatory enough. Do we really need a device to tell us how to get it on?

Meanwhile, Lovely, the crowdfunded cock ring, never met its goal; it raised only $43,226 of $95,000. Its Indiegogo page says that while the campaign garnered attention from “thousands of people (thank you!), hundreds of journalists and dozens of distributors and investors,” it’s going in a different direction to bring the device to market. The company’s founder says the campaign failed for a number of reasons, including a lack of marketing and advertising funds. He’s hopeful that Lovely will find investors by year’s end.

“If we close the deal before 2016 we should be on track to ship Lovely within a year,” Konik said.

So 2016 could be the year of the quantified cock. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should and the one thing that neither company is copping to is a lack of consumer interest. The quantified-self movement is already masturbatory enough. Do we really need a device to tell us how to get it on?

Indiegogo darling, Eva, the self-professed “truly wearable couples’ vibrator,” recently broke crowdfunding records, and raised $806,472 on a $200,000 goal. Meanwhile, the sex toy industry is booming with $15 billion in annual revenue according to Statistic Brain. Sex toys are big business, but if Lovely’s crowdfunding failure is any indication, male-centric sex tracking isn’t the wave of the future.

The company claims “Lovely monitors your body movements during sex and sends this data to the Lovely App.” It tracks speed, duration, g-force and calories burned and uses that information to “provide you with personalized, sex related ideas and suggestions.” It also acts as the digital equivalent of one of those Kama Sutra black light posters you find at mall novelty shops, providing illustrated suggestions for new sex positions based on your previous behavior. Perhaps the only truly helpful bit of information to be gleaned from the app is calories burned, a metric you can get from myriad fitness trackers.

The Sexfit meanwhile adds the ridiculously useless “thrusts per minute” to the mix and allows users to “share and compare their favorite sessions and impressive individual milestones with their peers on social media.” Because, you know, your Facebook friends are dying to know how the motion in your ocean stacks up.

According to Gartner, wearable fitness tracking device shipments reached 70 million in 2014. While the accuracy of these devices varies slightly and their usefulness has been called into question, studies have shown that they’re great motivational tools… at least for a time. The Huffington Post published a story in July saying that only half of Fitbit’s 20 million users were still active in the first quarter of 2015. And Fitbit and its competitors are actually solving a problem. I still haven’t figured out why I need to know the g-force of my penis.

While Bondara has yet to release pricing information, Lovely would tentatively retail for $169. That’s a lot to ask for a sustained boner, a little clitoral stimulation and a handful of useless metrics. The bestselling vibrating cock rings at popular sex toy retailer Good Vibrations cost between $8 and $25 by comparison. They may not connect to a fancy app that tells you when your lover is close by and ready to get it on a la Lovely, but if you need an app to tell you that, you’re probably not having a whole lot of sex in the first place.

So you won’t find a smartphone-connected cock ring under the Christmas tree this year. In fact, the quantified cock may be little more than a poorly executed wet dream, but, really, you’re probably better off with a truck stop French tickler, anyway.

Force Awakens edition of Droid Turbo 2 hits shelves today

Verizon has always had a close relationship with Lucasfilm – the name of their famed DROID series of smartphones has been licensed from them since the original Motorola DROID was unveiled in 2009. Later came the DROID R2D2 edition of the DROID 2 and the rest, as they say, is history. Today Verizon and Lucasfilm (Read: Disney) unveil another Star Wars themed DROID smartphone, the special edition Force Awakens DROID Turbo 2 (Say that five times fast).

What this actually means is that now on MotoMaker (which you can access online or in Verizon stores) there are pre-built DROID Turbo 2 designs that include custom color palates and backing materials based on characters from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The characters in question are Poe Dameron, Rey, BB-8, a First Order Stormtrooper, and Kylo Ren. My personal favorite is the BB-8 style:

BB-8 DT2

Once you’ve gotten your custom Droided up DROID Turbo 2 you can download “Star Wars Wallpapers for Droid Turbo 2” app from the Google Play store for a set of custom wallpapers to make your setup complete. The Star Wars edition of the DROID Turbo 2 is virtually the same as any other DROID Turbo 2, so be on the lookout for my review of this indestructible phone sometime later this month. If you can’t wait that long, go ahead and pick one up now from Verizon Wireless or MotoMaker

Beginning today until December 31, 2015, AT&T customers who activate or upgrade to an iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus on AT&T Next are eligible to receive a second 16GB iPhone 6s for free, or a $650 bill credit towards the purchase of another iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus model.

App Store on iOS Begins Identifying Apps With Universal Support for Apple TV

Apple appears to be rolling out a new feature in its App Store on iOS to note when an app available on iOS is universally compatible with the fourth generation Apple TV. As pointed out by iFun.de [Google Translate], the new feature is still in the early phases, as universal compatibility with the Apple TV is currently marked as “SF.UniversalAppleTV” rather than a simple “Apple TV” title as is used for Apple Watch just above. The new identifier is also not yet showing in the App Store when viewed through iTunes on the desktop.

pandora universal app

With the growing popularity of the App Store on Apple TV, it makes sense for Apple to want to begin connecting the iOS and tvOS experience as they did when introducing universal iPhone and iPad apps in 2010 and with the addition of the Apple Watch earlier this year. Following its launch in October, Apple began running a new advertising campaign for the Apple TV, which it continues to expand with television shows like Game of Thrones and Veep.

Apple allows developers to build universal apps that support iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple TV all from one purchase, so it makes sense to provide users with information on what platforms are included when they prepare to download a new app.

Samsung details latest monthly security update, includes 24 fixes

samsung_logo_curved_display_TA

Samsung has took to its Samsung Mobile Security Blog to offer details and information on its next round of monthly security updates. This latest update will include patches from both Samsung and Google.

Samsung this time around has includes all of the patches found in Google’s December Security Bulletin. Not only that, but the Korean tech giant has packaged in another nine fixes of its own. In total, this monthly security update will apply 24 fixes to the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, the Note 4, Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Note Edge, Tab S, and Tab S2.

Despite these monthly security updates being all about transparency, Samsung won’t be detailing some of the fixes included in order to avoid giving away unnecessary information to hackers and those who would wish to exploit devices.

These updates are rolling out right now, but some of you may not get them, as it depends heavily upon the region you’re in and the carrier you’re using. For instance, those on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint might not get these updates for some time now, if at all.

Special Star Wars themed DROID Turbo 2 options revealed by Verizon

verizon_star_wars_droid_turbo_2

Yesterday word surfaced that Verizon and Motorola were working on some special versions of the DROID Turbo 2 that would be part of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens marketing train that it seems everyone is hopping on board. The original indications were that this might mean special wallpapers for the devices, which it turns out is part of the deal, but other options were unclear. Verizon has now revealed that starting today, users can customize their DROID Turbo 2 devices through Moto Maker to not only get the wallpapers, but they will have a selection of special colors and backing materials to choose from.

The color combinations that Motorola and Verizon are making available as part of this special offer are based on characters from the Star Wars franchise. They include Poe Dameron, Rey, BB-8, a First Order Stormtrooper, and Kylo Ren. The special wallpapers will also be part of the marketing tie-in, although their release is still pending. Verizon indicates they will be available in the Google Play store for owners of the DROID Turbo 2.

If you want to get in on this deal, hit the links below to read more or start your order process. It appears the earliest delivery for the units is December 21st, so you may not have it by opening night.

Google Wallet lets you text your friends money

Google has updated both the iOS and Android versions of their Google Wallet app and have added in a really cool feature in my opinion. That feature is that you can now send money to most anyone by a simple text message. Yes, that’s right. Just like with Gmail where you can send money via an attachment to your best friend or your favorite family member, you can now send a text message to someone and it can include cold, hard cash. Not literally, but they will of course get paid.

For me this is pretty huge because I do a lot of payment stuff via Google Wallet, both sending and receiving. Most of the time I do this from home, as it’s just a bit easier to do it on the PC. But now, I can simply send a text message to one of my contacts and they will get money. This means while I’m sitting at my favorite restaurant, I can just send my best friend money who is dining with me and he can pay for our meal before we leave.

Google Wallet Featured Image

Google announced this earlier and while it’s not available for everyone right now, they are rolling it out slowly over the next several days. Unfortunately, I’m still on the waiting list so I don’t have the option/feature yet, but hopefully I will and then I’m going to be sending money via text messages like crazy.

No email? No problem! Now you can send money to anyone in your contact list using just a phone number.

When you send money to a phone number, the recipient will get a text message with a secure link. They can simply enter their debit card to claim the money and it will be available in their bank account within minutes.

To start using this feature, look for a new version of the Google Wallet app on Google Play or in the App Store in the next few days.

So now that this new little feature is rolling out to Google Wallet, what’s next? A lot of people thought Google Wallet wasn’t going to survive and was possibly going away soon’ish. Are you one of those that thought that or not? Regardless, tell us your thoughts on this new feature in the comments section below and let us know if you’ll be sending us some money via a text message so we can keep an eye open for that!

New York shuts down FanDuel, DraftKings during legal battle

FanDuel and DraftKings will not be allowed to operate in New York while the companies fight in court against state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who contends the sites constitute illegal gambling. State Supreme Court Judge Manuel Mendez ruled on Friday that the sites shut down until the legal battle is resolved, noting that the decision is “not a final determination of the merits and rights of the parties,” The Wall Street Journal reports. Schneiderman fought for the temporary shut-down, while both sites (unsuccessfully) argued that they should be allowed to operate during the trial.

DraftKings plans to appeal, it says in a statement to The WSJ: “We are disappointed with the Court’s decision and will immediately file an emergency notice of appeal in order to preserve the status quo. Daily Fantasy Sports contests have been played legally by New Yorkers for the past seven years and we believe this status quo should be maintained while the litigation plays out.”

Schneiderman says he is “pleased” with the decision, the site reports. “I have said from the beginning that my job is to enforce the law and that is what happened today,” he said.

Schneiderman has also targeted Yahoo’s daily fantasy sports business. Nevada, home of gambling hub Las Vegas, recently shut down DraftKings and FanDuel in the state. We break down the world of daily fantasy sports (and lawsuits) right here.
