[Deal] Get the Fire HD 6 Tablet for just £59 from Amazon UK

Amazon_Fire_HD_6

Giving a tablet as a Christmas present can serve dual purposes; on the one hand, it will make you feel good that you gave such a nice present, and on the other it will keep the recipient busy (quiet) for hours. You don’t have to spend the earth either because Amazon’s Fire HD 6 is a perfectly decent offering with decent features for its price. And, handily for this time of year, it has been discounted to just £59, giving a saving of £20.

For £59, the Fire HD 6 features the following specifications:

  • Fire OS 5 “Bellini
  • 6-Inch HD IPS display with 1280 x 800 resolution and 252ppi (Gorilla Glass protections
  • Quad-core processor (2 x cores @ 1.2GHz + 2 x cores @ 1.5GHz)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal storage (4.5GB user)
  • 2MP Rear camera
  • VGA Front camera
  • Mono speaker/microphone
  • WiFi: 802.11 b/g/n
  • Dimensions: 169 x 103 x 10.7mm
  • Weight: 290 grams
  • 3.5mm Audio jack

The Amazon Fire HD 6 isn’t the best tablet you can buy, but for £59 it’s a decent step up from the basic Fire Tablet (reviewed here) that is just £10 cheaper but comes with a display with a poorer resolution (1024 x 600). Amazon UK shows the Fire HD 6 as in stock and ready to be delivered by December 11th (if you are an Amazon Prime customer). Only the Black, Cobalt and Citron colours are eligible for the £20 saving, the White and Magenta options revert to the usual £79 price tag.

It should be noted that the Fire HD 6 does come with Special Offers, which means you’ll receive personalised offers on the bottom of the device, as well as on the screen saver. Luckily, if this annoys you, you can opt out for just £10 anytime afterwards. Does the Amazon Fire HD 6 tick your box? Let us know in the comments below.

Best Buy knocks $100 off all its Apple Watches

Here are two pieces of information that you might think that it’s worth using to draw a conclusion, or not, we won’t judge. First up, Best Buy is offering a $100 discount on the Apple Watches that it sells, meaning that you can grab a base-model 38mm Sport for just $249. Second, rumors have emerged claiming that Apple will launch the second-generation of its wearable at an event in March. Now, if you wanted to imply that the retailer is clearing house in preparation for the inevitable refresh, well, that’d entirely be up to you.

It’s not the only store that’s currently offering deep discounts on Apple Watch models, although others aren’t feeling as generous. Target will also sell you a watch for $249, but the $100 discount comes in the form of vouchers that can only be spent at the same retailer. Alternatively, it could just be a way to pep up sales for the holiday season, since sales of the Watch have been remarkably consistent for the last two quarters. Either way, if you’ve been waiting for a chance to grab one and don’t mind the risk of something trumping it in the new year, this is your moment.

PINE A64 is a $15, ‘high-performance’ take on the Raspberry Pi

Thanks to boards like the Raspberry Pi, DIY computing projects are no longer reserved for enthusiasts who can afford to sink hundreds of dollars into them. As the new $5 Pi Zero demonstrates, picking up on a new project now costs the same as a cup of coffee. It also means that if a new entrant wants to make an impact, it needs to include a better range of components or beat its competition on price. Or both. And that’s exactly what PINE64 Inc. is looking to do.

There’s no denying that the PINE64 Inc. is attempting to build upon the Raspberry Pi’s legacy. The team says its board’s name is derived from two constant variables – Pi and Euler’s Number e (the mathematical constant). As you may have guessed, the 64 comes from its 64-bit processor and the A helps differentiate it from future versions. Taking of processors, the PINE A64 hosts an ARMv8 Cortex-A53 chip. Oh, and it starts from just $15 and is available to “pre-order” via Kickstarter right now.

Measuring 3.125 inches by 5 inches, the PINE A64 includes a quad-core ARM Cortex A53 1.2GHz processor, dual-core Mali 400 MP2 graphics, support for up to 2GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a microSD slot (which can handle cards up to 256GB), up to gigabit ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI 1.4 connector offering 4K output and both a stereo mini-jack connector and built-in 3.7V Lithium battery charging circuit. PINE64 Inc. will also offer separate modules that will add a 5-megapixel camera port, 4 lane MIPI video port, touch panel port, WiFi connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0. Like other boards, it runs on 5V power through MicroUSB but can also call upon on-board power management via a battery.

“PINE64 set out to create a simple, smart and affordable computer that gives people access toward making their next big idea come to life.” says Co-Founder Johnson Jeng. “We provide a powerful 64-bit quad-core single-board computer at an exceptional price and remain compatible with multiple open source software platforms to build a community of creativity and innovation.”

If you’re familiar with other ARM-based boards then you know the drill. It can be set up to operate as a mini computer, a gaming console, control your connected home and let you run your own media center. It’ll handle Android 5.1 (Lollipop), Ubuntu Linux, openHAB, OpenWRT and Kodi, which offers 4Kx2K output via the H.265 video standard (1080p60 and 4Kp30) and also supports Miracast.

Why so cheap?

When asked why Raspberry Pi continued to launch hardware based on the ARMv7 architecture when ARMv8 64-bit chips are readily available, founder Eben Upton alluded to the fact that a more powerful processor would come with a boost in price. When your business is focused on delivering performance without the cost, that can become a problem.

For PINE64 Inc., the tipping point likely came earlier this year when companies began launching new super-cheap 64-bit System-on-a-Chip (SoC) platforms. Allwinner, for example, touted a $5 64-bit Cortex A53 processor for tablets way back in January, and it’s this chip that powers the $15 PINE A64 board. A year is a long time in the fast-moving world of processors, so it’s reasonable to expect that Raspberry Pi’s rationale for sticking with ARMv7 isn’t as valid as it once was.

PINE64 is available as three different models — the PINE A64, PINE A64+ and PINE A64+ 2GB — that offer more memory, connectivity and features for a little extra money:

While there are plenty of 4K streamers now available, namely via Amazon and Roku, nothing quite beats being able to build one yourself. The open-source community has already fully embraced the Raspberry Pi and ported powerful media center software so it can run on the Pi’s ARMv7 chipset, but video decoding is stable but not spectacular. Sure, you can throw a 4GB Matroska-encoded (MKV) file at it and it’ll do the job, but extra performance is always welcome. That’s not to say the PINE A64 is a 4K powerhouse, and a lot also depends on the software you’re using for the job.

PINE64 Inc. says it is launching pre-orders via Kickstarter (with a $31,416 goal) in order to get an idea of what makers want to see before it comes to market. Do people want a $15 version or a $19 model with better specs, for instance? If you decide to back the project today, the company says boards will begin shipping globally in February.

There will undoubtedly be interest in a development board that can offer more power and similar features to the Pi and at an very competitive price. However, it remains to be seen whether the crowdsourcing approach will resonate with makers who can order a rival board anytime they want.

[Rumour] HTC’s next flagship is codenamed ‘Perfume’, will launch with Android 6.1 and Sense 8 in tow

htc_logo_fall_2015

Back in August, there was a rumour that HTC’s next flagship handset ran under the codename ‘O2’ and featured a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 6-inch display. In theory, it was a monster of a handset, with a fan’s wish list of high-end specifications, which means it shouldn’t be a surprise to learn that the ‘O2’ is dead in the water. Instead, HTC’s next flagship is running under the codename ‘Perfume’.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

This is according to @LlabTooFeR, a serial leaker with a good track record when it comes to HTC. This new ‘Perfume’ flagship will apparently launch with Android 6.1 Marshmallow with Sense 8 in tow. Before you begin worrying about the ‘Perfume’ moniker, it should be stressed that it is a codename only. You can imagine the headlines if it launched as the HTC Perfume and it didn’t meet expectations.

Hopefully, the HTC ‘Perfume’ can continue to pull the struggling Taiwanese company out of its financial problems, much like the One A9 (reviewed here) that has helped HTC post a 6-month high in revenue.

It’s going to be at least March before HTC announce the ‘Perfume’, what specifications would you like it to feature? And do you want it to carry on with the One A9’s design language?

Duet Display Updated With iPad Pro Support, Major Performance Improvements

Second-screen app Duet Display received a significant update today, introducing a new resolution option to support Apple’s 12.9-inch iPad Pro and bringing significant performance improvements for both iPads and Macs that run the accompanying software.

For those unfamiliar with Duet Display, it’s an app that is designed to turn the iPad or iPhone into a secondary display for a Mac. Duet Display was the first app to use a Lightning cable to allow an iPad or iPhone to interface with a Mac, thereby drastically cutting down on the lag that’s typically present when an iOS device is used as a secondary display for a Mac over Wi-Fi.

Since its late 2014 launch, Duet Display has been updated several times to improve performance on a wide range of iPads and iPhones, but according to Duet Display developer Rahul Dewan, today’s update brings “massive performance improvements.” Improving performance was necessary to allow a Mac or PC to drive the high-resolution display of the iPad Pro while maintaining a lag-free connection, but the improvements also apply to all older iPads.

With the latest version of Duet Display, CPU usage has been reduced by over 80 percent on iPad and Mac or PC, thanks to a new algorithm that’s more efficient and an intelligent refresh feature that’s similar to the iPad Pro’s own faster refresh technology, but on the software end. Extremely high CPU usage was one of our major complaints with Duet Display when it was first released and it’s been a customer concern for some time, so this update should go a long way towards fixing one of the major pain points in the app.

Duet Display has proven to be a popular app with iPad owners as it gives the iPad the versatility to be used as a second display for a Mac. iPad Pro owners may find Duet Display to be especially useful given the large screen real estate of the device.

Duet Display can be downloaded from the App Store for $9.99 (reg. $15.99). [Direct Link]

Apple Says iOS 9.2 Fixes Unresponsive iPad Pro Issues

iPad-Pro-ChargingApple has confirmed that iOS 9.2 should prevent an issue that caused some iPad Pros to become unresponsive after charging from continuing in the future.

Shortly after the launch of the iPad Pro, some early adopters began complaining about an issue that caused the 12.9-inch tablet to become unresponsive after charging, requiring a hard restart to restore functionality.

Apple acknowledged the problem in a support document on its website, stating that it was “investigating” the issue, and has now updated that support document to reflect that “iOS 9.2 or later” should prevent the issue from occurring again.

The issue affected both 32GB and 128GB iPad Pros on iOS 9.1, including Wi-Fi and LTE models, and some users speculated that restoring from an iCloud backup during setup may have contributed to the freezing issues.

iOS 9.2 was released on Tuesday alongside OS X 10.11.2, tvOS 9.1 and watchOS 2.1.

The Moto E will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow after all, in select regions only

Moto_E_2015_Main_TA

A month or two ago when Motorola first published its list of handsets that were eligible to be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, you might have noticed that there was some distinct outrage that the Moto E 2015 wasn’t mentioned. Motorola has since updated the list, with the Moto E 2015 making an appearance. It is only good news, however, depending on which region you live in.

According to the newly updated list, the Moto E 2015 will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but only in the following regions:

  • Canada
  • Latin America
  • Europe
  • Asia

If you own a Moto E 2015 that originated from China or the US, it would appear you are still out of luck. While it’s a nice surprise for the eligible regions, for the US and China, it’s still a bitter pill to swallow for a handset released only a few months ago, especially since Motorola had promised timely updates.

Do you think Motorola will update the list again to include US and China? And how does this color your view of Motorola? Let us know in the comments. Afterall

Marshmallow heading to the Moto E 2015 after all, but not in the US

Mote-E-LTE-10-710x473

Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates are already planned and even rolling out to a number of high end smartphones but Motorola has announced that it will be bringing a Marshmallow update to its wallet friendly Moto E 2015 smartphone too. Although there are a few conditions.

According to Motorola’s announcement, the Moto E 2015 Marshmallow update will only be available in a select number of regions and will only apply to the 4G LTE models. This means that the Snapdragon 410 powered versions of the handset will be supported, but the Snapdragon 200 processor version won’t be.

motorola-logo-mwc-2015-1See also: Motorola confirms Marshmallow plans, no love for US carriers’ Moto X (2014)52

The update will officially launch only in Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia, excluding China. The USA is strangely absent from the list, which is also the case for carrier versions of the Moto X 2014. Customers may end up having to look for unofficial ports and custom ROMs to get their Marshmallow fix.

Originally, the Moto E 2015 had been left off from Motorola’s Marshmallow upgrade roadmap. This left many customers feeling that the handset’s support lifetime was cut shorter than had been promised. Fortunately, this little bargain handset will offer up some additional Marshmallow value after all. Now we just have to wait for the company to announce a timetable.
