5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly
Welcome back to Android Apps Weekly! Here are your big headlines from the last week:
- Telltale Games is chugging right along as they picked up yet another popular IP to turn into one of their now-iconic episodic adventures. This time around, they’re making a Batman game. If their prior efforts are any indication, this game will likely be really good and true to the story of Batman. The game is expected to be released in 2016.
- Google Play has released their picks for the best apps and games of 2015. It’s a pretty standard list and a lot of them may only be there because of their popularity or their close ties to Google. In either case, there are no real bad eggs on the list and we encourage you to check them out!
- The Room 1 and 2 are among the best and most interesting puzzle games ever to land on Android. As it turns out, the developers have been fervently working on The Room 3 and that should be out Monday, January 11th, 2016. Needless to say, this app guy will be buying that on day one because it’s probably going to be awesome.
- Google has released a new type of advertisement that allows people to play-test games in the advertisement without actually downloading the game. The hope is that the player will enjoy the experience and download the game after trying the in-ad demo. On paper, it seems really awesome but you know people are when it comes to advertisements.
- Google has announced that by the end of January, they will have completely absorbed Songza into Google Play Music. As a result, the Songza service will be shutting down permanently. There is a silver lining as Google will be helping Songza users migrate over to Google Play Music to continue using those features.

We don’t normally do app updates in this section anymore but LinkedIn made such a huge change to their app that it’s worth talking about. Especially when the app was as bad as LinkedIn’s used to be. The new design features sprinkles of Material Design and it also appears to take some design cues from Facebook. The app centers around the core functions of the service and it’s so much easier getting around. If you haven’t checked out LinkedIn in a while, it’s worth a shot now.

Rayman Adventures is the latest adventure-platformer game out of the once iconic Rayman franchise. This one features a bit more exploration than prior titles and the point will be to collect all of the Incrediballs. Interestingly, Ubisoft is going with a Freemium pricing model which is in stark contrast to the pay-once games that didn’t have in-app purchases. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out, but so far the user reactions have been positive.

Storehouse

Storehouse is a unique photo sharing application that creates a kind of webpage with up to 50 of your photos for easy sharing. The basic idea as far as I can tell is that it lets you create a collection of photos which it then arranges on a webpage type of layout. You can then send that link to your friends who can then view it on their mobile devices or on the computer if they so choose. It’s fun to use and it’s totally free with no in-app purchases.

Cardboard Camera

Last and certainly not least this week is Cardboard Camera. This app is meant to be used in conjuction with Google Cardboard and it helps you create VR photographs. In other words, it lets you take photos that are meant to be viewed in complete VR. The app works surprisingly well and some of the stuff you can create with this is really awesome. It’s completely free to download and use and is now another great reason to grab at least a Google Cardboard device.

Nexus device displaying washed out colors? You are not alone and a fix is coming
Did you happen to notice washed out colors in your Nexus device after the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update? You are not alone. Plenty of reports regarding this issue have surfaced online, and Google has even recognized the problem.

There is a bug in the Android 6.0 software for the Nexus Player, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. In a way, this is good news, as many of you probably thought this was a hardware issue and not something you can easily fix with an update.
Google goes on to mention that the issue with the Nexus Player is not the same as the one with the smartphones. The cause seems to be different, and the Search Giant has actually fixed the smartphone bug already, they just need to send it out in a future update.

As for the Nexus Player, Google is already working on a fix, we just don’t know when, exactly, it will be hitting your Android TV devices. There also doesn’t seem to be any kind of workaround to fix this, so your best bet is to wait for whenever Google gets to updating your Google devices.

Scientists 3D print ‘live’ blood vessels
It’s no longer a rare feat to 3D print blood vessels. Printing vessels that act like the real deal, however, has been tricky… until now. Lawrence Livermore researchers have successfully 3D printed blood vessels that deliver nutrients and self-assemble like they would in a human body. The key is to print an initial structure out of cells and other organic material, and then to augment it with bio ink and other body-friendly materials. With enough time, everything joins up and behaves naturally.

They call it the Advent Calendar Game. Like any other game, you need a certain level of interaction and dedication in order to take advantage of all it has to offer.

Samsung Gear S2 update starts rolling out with new features
A software update for the Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch started hitting user devices over the weekend. The update adds some new apps, watch faces, a variety of new features, and the usual performance improvements and bug fixes.
Among the apps that are now available to owners of the Gear S2 is a World Clock app, News Briefing and ESPN apps. The ESPN app will let users see scores of their favorite games on the device. Samsung also includes some new Mendini watch faces which may be especially popular for users who have purchased the Mendini bands.
Some of the new features include a new unread notification indicator. A small red sphere will show up on the watch face when there are unread notifications to be reviewed. Samsung also added a new alert to let users know when Bluetooth is disconnected. There is a new search feature available in the Contacts app, screen time out settings have been updated, and emojis are now available through the keyboard.

Japan’s Venus probe is about to take another shot
Japan tried and failed to get its Akatsuki (“Dawn”) probe into Venus’ orbit back in 2010, and the spacecraft has been stuck orbiting the Sun ever since. However, the team is about to get another chance at completing its intended mission. Controllers plan to fire the ship’s engines on December 7th at 9AM Japan time (December 6th 7PM ET), hopefully giving it just enough of a push to (eventually) get it circling around Venus. They’ll know whether or not the burn worked properly within a few hours, but it’ll take a few days before they know if they’re in orbit.
Update: The attempt is happening in just a few minutes, for live updates you can watch a stream of the data and control center, or follow Emily Lakdwalla on Twitter.
