‘The Beatles: 1+’ Collection Debuts on iTunes With 50 Restored Music Videos
A new collection of 50 music videos by The Beatles has hit the iTunes Store today and comes packed in with remastered versions of the band’s most popular singles along with a sampling of “mini-movies” the quartet made together (via MacNews). The $26.99 collection, dubbed The Beatles: 1+, is divided up into 27 music videos of the group’s #1 hit singles from the United Kingdom and United States, as well as 23 alternate versions of some of the songs.

After The Beatles stopped touring, and because travelling around the globe to promote new releases was impossible, they increasingly made what could be described as “mini movies”. These pioneering promotional films and videos helped to define the way we have come to watch music. The Beatles 1+ features all of their 27 #1, UK and US singles as beautifully restored videos for each song, along with 23 alternate versions, as well as rarely seen and newly restored films and videos of additional songs.
The restored videos and audio mixes were produced from the classic analogue tapes made at Abbey Road Studios, and even include audio commentary and introductions by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Fans who purchase the collection will also receive a digital illustrated art book with 113 pages of details and notes about each of the hit songs found in the 1+ collection.
Although Apple and The Beatles were initially in disagreement on the exact terms of releasing the band’s popular oeuvre onto the iTunes Store, the eventual digital release of their albums saw impressive sales numbers in the months afterwards. The band’s music has yet to make its way onto Apple Music, but Apple has curated a few Beatles-themed radio stations, including a track list of the band members’ alternative work and some of the more popular Beatles tracks sung by other artists.

Dropbox Shutting Down Mailbox and Carousel in Early 2016
Dropbox has announced that it will be shutting down popular email and photo sharing apps Mailbox and Carousel on February 26, 2016 and March 31, 2016 respectively.
Dropbox originally acquired Mailbox in March 2013, and launched Carousel in April 2014. The company says it will be communicating directly with users of both apps in the coming days.
Mailbox users will no longer be able to sign in starting February 26, and Dropbox will disable and delete “Auto-swipe” patterns, return “Snoozed” emails to inboxes and delete all email drafts on that day. Mailbox has posted a FAQ to assist users with the transition.
Carousel timeline photos will remain available in Dropbox, and an export tool will be released early next year to save conversations or shared albums. In the meantime, photos within shared albums can be saved to Dropbox directly from the Carousel app. Carousel has posted a FAQ to help users with the transition.
Dropbox:
The Carousel and Mailbox teams have built products that are loved by many people and their work will continue to have an impact. We’ll be taking key features from Carousel back to the place where your photos live—in the Dropbox app. We’ll also be using what we’ve learned from Mailbox to build new ways to communicate and collaborate on Dropbox (you can see early signs of this focus with Paper).
Mailbox:
…As we deepened our focus on collaboration, we realized there’s only so much an email app can do to fundamentally fix email. We’ve come to believe that the best way for us to improve people’s productivity going forward is to streamline the workflows that generate so much email in the first place.
Carousel:
When we introduced Carousel in April 2014, we believed a standalone app would be a better way to experience photos. We’re proud to have created a photo app that many of you use and love. However, over the past year and a half, we’ve learned the vast majority of our users prefer the convenience and simplicity of interacting with their photos directly inside of Dropbox.
Dropbox users who earned bonus space for using Mailbox or Carousel will retain that storage.

WSJ: “President-level” Samsung executives investigated for insider trading

High-ranking Samsung executives are under investigation in South Korea for alleged insider trading involving shares worth up to $43 million.
Korea’s financial watchdog, the Financial Services Commission, is reportedly looking into suspicious market activity that occurred before the announcement of the acquisition of Samsung C&T by Cheil Industries, the Samsung group’s de facto holding company.
The investigation, which could take up to a year, was announced last Friday, and nine executives have been revealed to be under investigation. The Samsung executives belong to three or four of Samsung’s major companies. These persons are investigated for buying Cheil Industries stock worth $35 million-$43 million in the days before the acquisition of Samsung C&T was made public in May 2015. Cheil’s shares rose after the announcement.
According to the Wall Street Journal, citing a FSC official, other Samsung employees may be involved as well, including some “president-level” executives.
Samsung has around 60 affiliates, which are autonomous companies controlled by the Lee family through a complex web of ownership. Each of these structures has one or more president-level executives.
When Cheil Industries bought Samsung C&T, prevailing thinking was that the move was intended to give Lee Jae-yong, Samsung’s vice chairman, better control over Samsung Electronics, the all-important unit that makes smartphones, among other devices. Samsung C&T, a construction company, owns a part of Samsung Electronics.
Lee Jae-yong is seen as the heir to the Samsung empire. His father, chairman Lee Keun-hee, is yet to recover from a heart attack he suffered in 2014. By having Cheil buy C&T, Lee Jae-yong obtained control over 4.1% of Samsung Electronics.

To be clear, there are no public allegations against Samsung Electronics executives.
Still, this complication could, in theory, make it harder for the 47-year-old Lee Jae-yong to take on the reins of the massive conglomerate, which sells everything from clothes, to insurance, to cargo ships and mobile devices.
The leadership of Samsung Electronics is going through changes, following the company’s recent slowdown. Shin Jong-Kyun, who has led the mobile division through its rise and recent fall, will step back from day to day operations, though he will keep his co-CEO and president position. Taking over control is Koh Dong-Jin, who already warned about Samsung’s “tough year” ahead.
Huawei Mate 8 to go on sale this week

Last month, Huawei unveiled its new Mate 8 flagship smartphone and the handset will finally be going on sale this Wednesday, December 9th, at least in China. The announcement was made by Huawei’s head of smartphones, He Gang, and has been accompanied by the teaser above.
For a recap, the Huawei Mate 8 comes packing the company’s new Kirin 950 SoC, which is an octa-core big.LITTLE chip based on four Cortex-A72 and four A53 CPU cores, as well as a Mali-T880 MP4 GPU. There’s either 3GB or 4GB of RAM to choose from depending on the internal memory size, along with a 6-inch 1080p display, 16 megapixel rear and 8 megapixel front cameras, and a 4,000mAh battery.

The Huawei Mate 8 will carry a variety of price tags for its different memory options. Here’s the breakdown:
- 3GB RAM, 32GB storage – CNY 2,999 ($470)
- 4GB RAM, 64GB storage – CNY 3,699 ($580)
- 4GB RAM, 128GB storage – CNY 4,399 ($690)
- Exclusive Champagne Edition – CNY 6,888 ($1075)
Huawei is expecting that its Mate 8 will outsell its predecessor, which managed 7 million sales within one year. A target of one million units per month is pretty bold, but the Mate 8 certainly has a plenty of hardware on offer at a competitive price point. International availability will be announced at CES 2016.

First Generation Lytro 16GB Camera

The majority of the cameras out there only capture the position of light rays, which produces an average static 2D image. The Lytro camera, on the other hand, records the direction of these rays, which generates images you can later refocus, change prospective within, or view in 3D. This essentially means you’ll be able to revisit the scene of the photo!
The camera will be able to record 11 million light rays in each scene. And with 16 gigabytes of included storage on this thing, you’ll be able to store up to 750 images at one time. Amazon’s $250 Fire bundle will feed your reading habit
If you’ve been eyeing an e-reader for that special someone this holiday, Amazon has a new bundle that could do the trick. The online retailer announced what it’s calling the Reader’s Edition of the Fire HD 8. In addition to the reading gadget itself, the $250 price includes a year of books from Kindle Unlimited and a leather cover. If you were to pay separately, the Kindle Unlimited subscription alone would cost you $120 for 12 months.

Twitter no longer crops the photos in your Timeline

A small change, but one that’s welcome all the same. Starting today Twitter.com will no longer crop the photos in your timeline, saving you a click to see holiday snaps, selfies and anything else the people you follow have been posting. It also means that when you upload an image, especially anything in a square format, you don’t have to worry about how it’ll appear on the web. That’s good news for shutterbugs and news organisations, although power users will probably be disappointed in the move, which ultimately sacrifices tweet volume for visual media.

Japan Display Planning Mass Production of OLED Displays for iPhones in Early 2018
Apple supplier Japan Display plans to begin mass production of OLED displays for future iPhones in spring 2018, according to Japanese website Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun [Google Translate] (via GforGames).
Japan Display executives are reportedly in negotiations with Apple about securing OLED orders for future iPhones, in an effort to compete with existing OLED panel suppliers Samsung Electronics and LG Display.
Japan Display, a joint venture formed in 2012 by Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba, is one of two major LCD display suppliers for current iPhones alongside rival Japanese company Sharp. Apple has used LCD panels for iPhones since the original model launched in 2007.
KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported last month that iPhones are unlikely to have OLED displays for at least the next three years, and Japanese website Nikkei confirmed that Apple plans to switch to OLED displays for iPhones starting in 2018. Apple may continue to offer some iPhone models with LCD displays to fulfill demand.
OLED displays can provide sharper images, better color accuracy and brighter colors compared to LCD displays, but the technology generally has a shorter lifespan and higher manufacturing costs. Samsung’s popular Galaxy-branded smartphones are equipped with AMOLED displays, as is the Apple Watch.
Should these supply chain rumors prove true, the so-called “iPhone 8” could be released in late 2018 as Apple’s first smartphone equipped with an OLED display, based on the company’s current naming and release cycle.

HTC One A9 helped the company hit $314 million in revenue for November, report says
The sinking ship that is HTC has been, well, sinking for some time now, but it looks like the company’s new flagship, the One A9 (review here), is beginning to turn things around. HTC posted a revenue of $314 million for the month of November, which is a 6-month high, according to DigiTimes.
DigiTimes says One A9 sales truly was a key component in reaching this number, especially when compared to revenue figures from just a few months back. The sales jump is 14.96%, but it’s important to note that this is only month-to-month performance. Year-to-year performance still isn’t looking good (there was actually a 39% decline), which is something HTC needs to resolve for long-term success.
There’s still a little under a month to go before we close out 2015, but DigiTimes is already expecting HTC to post a revenue of $3.3 billion for the year, which is a 33% decline from last year’s revenue figures. We truly hope business gets better for HTC, but it goes without saying, the smartphone market has some tough competition that’s only increasing, which is some of the trouble LG is facing.
While the numbers for November is good news, the One A9 won’t be able to sustain HTC for long. More competition is just around the corner, as big manufacturers are preparing to release their flagships for the next year.
Hopefully HTC has something up its sleeve to stay competitive and get out of the hole it’s in.
