Lara Croft GO won Mobile Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2015

It’s awards season in the video game world and kicking it off is The Game Awards 2015 that was held in Los Angeles on December 3rd. While the obvious main attraction was the overall Game of the Year award – which ended up going to the utterly awesome The Witcher 3 by CD Projekt RED – we were most interested about the mobile categories, namely the Mobile Game of the Year. Technically, the award was shared between mobile and handheld (which is kind of a bummer to begin with), but given the list of nominees, it’s not terribly surprising that Lara Croft GO won Mobile Game of the Year award ahead of its competition.

The other nominees in the category included Fallout Shelter, Downwell, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and Pac-Man 256. While all the games listed are great in their own right (the ones for mobile, at least), it’s obvious the award doesn’t really cater for the full breadth of mobile games available to Android and iOS, nor are they really taking mobile seriously as a gaming platform – in fact, if they really wanted to do it properly, they should have done all the same awards but for mobile. But hey, at the very least, if you’re looking for what’s probably the best game on mobile anyway, you can pick up Lara Croft GO at the Play Store for $4.99 USD.

Last Horizon on Android is a minimal space exploration game from Noodlecake Studios

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the- oh, my bad, let’s start over. If you’re looking for a mobile game that’s going to satiate your hunger for space exploration, you might not need to look further than Last Horizon on Android. It’s the work of one of our favourite mobile publishers around, Noodlecake Studios, and PixelJam Games, and it takes the form of a minimal (read: pixels) space exploration game where you pilot a tiny spacecraft – specifically “the last vessel of a fallen civilization” – planet hopping to refuel your ship in the hopes of finding the perfect new homeworld. Check out the launch trailer below for Last Horizon which is pretty much all gameplay footage:

It’s the type of game where deft fingers and calculated risk-taking will reap the most rewards – as long as you don’t get too near to the homeworlds of other civilizations. The price of admission is $2.99 USD which you’ll only have to pay once and no ad will ever show its face to you – if you’ve still got some Google Play credit lying around, perhaps you should be exploring the outer regions of known space.

A defective screen component led to the cancellation of the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE was announced at the start of October and was a significant announcement because it was the first Android Wear smartwatch to feature cellular capabilities. The watch was expected to be available for purchase in November in the U.S. and Korea, and shortly after in Europe. However, in a strange turn of events, the launch of the Urbane 2nd edition was canceled indefinitely. The reason given in November for the device’s cancellation was an “unspecified hardware issue.” However, last week, LG said the reason for withdrawing sales for the watch was not because of safety issues, but over the component’s potential to take away from the user experience over time. LG says this faulty component has never been used in any of its wearable devices before.

In a statement to Telegraph, LG stated: “For competitive and supplier relations reasons we are not in a position to communicate the specifics of the issue that led to this decision. However, what we can share is that the hardware issue was related to a new advanced component that we had incorporated in the device that had never been used in an LG wearable device before. During aggressive testing over thousands of hours under severe conditions, it was revealed that this component failed to meet LG’s quality standards and could potentially impact our image quality over the life of the device.”

I was not a fan of the original LG Watch Urbane’s chunky design, and much prefered the alluring sleekness of the Moto 360. However, I was still excited about the Urbane 2nd edition because, of course, its cellular capabilities and high resolution display. The Urbane 2nd edition was set to feature a 480×480 P-OLED display, meaning it would have been the most pixel-dense Android Wear smartwatch to ever have been released. Its cellular capabilities were also rather exciting, because users could make calls and texts directly from the watch itself, rather than through a Bluetooth-paired smartphone. This would’ve been great for runs and workouts, in which carrying a phone around is highly impractical.

LG did not specify whether or not a fixed model would be available soon. Were you excited to pick up the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE? Would you still want one if a revised model came out? Let us know in the comments below!

Mozilla is removing (some) ads from Firefox

Whether you still use Firefox or not, the company has some news: It’s pulling ads from the Tiles that pop up when a new tab is opened. The company says that the move is the result of learning what its users want (content that’s “relevant, exciting and engaging”) and that it’ll use the free spaces to help enable discovery of said content. But this won’t happen overnight. VP of content services Darren Herman writes that Mozilla will of course honor its obligations with its advertising partners and will gradually end the program over the next few months.

All of Google’s new emojis have leaked

Emojis (1)

Two days ago we told you that a slew of new emojis were coming to Nexus devices. Now we have images of all the new emojis in a leak.

One can expect Google’s new emojis to roll out on Nexus devices early next week. However, if you can’t wait that long to see them, a new leak has provided images containing all the new icons. The new emojis will be part of V.6 of what one can assume is a keyboard update. A link to all of the used unicodes and currently not used unicodes has also been posted, which can be retrieved at the source link down below. If you don’t want to see the icons until the official release, I suggest you turn away now.

TAG Heuer is experiencing difficulty keeping up with the rapid demand for its Android Wear smartwatch

tag_heuer_connected_band_colors

Back in November, TAG Heuer released its first ever Android Wear smartwatch. And so far everything is looking good.

The TAG Heuer smartwatch is a super premium Android Wear powered smartwatch with a round display. Out of all smartwatches, none resemble that of a real watch as closely as the TAG Heuer smartwatch. Apparently the $1,500 price tag isn’t a deal breaker.

A recent report from Bloomberg states that retailers and subsidiaries have requested approximately 100,000 TAG Heuer units since its release. This number is quite shocking and has pushed the company to raise its production level to 2,000 units weekly. In matter of fact, TAG Heuer has suspended sales temporarily while it attempts to catch up with the high demand. For now, the only ones who can get their hands on the smartwatch are physical retail stores.

Due to the success the smartwatch has received, Jean-Claude Biver CEO of TAG Heuer made the following statement in an interview with Bloomberg:

“Considering the success of this single and unique watch, we will develop a collection made out of different varieties, executions and materials at the end of next year or beginning of 2017.”

For Mirai buyers, Toyota trucking in mobile hydrogen stations

With only a small number of hydrogen stations available to the public in California, Toyota will bring in mobile H2 pumps to dealerships. The exact number of open, working, public hydrogen refueling stations in California is something of an open question. The EPA says there are 10. The California Fuel Cell Partnership (CAFCP) says there are four. Whatever the actual number, it’s not many, which is why Toyota is trucking temporary H2 stations to dealerships selling the new Mirai fuel cell car for early adopters.

Sony buys out Toshiba’s imaging sensor business at a heavy cost

Sony_Xperia_Z3v_Back_G_Camera_Lens_02_TA

In desperate need of a turnaround, Sony just purchased Toshiba’s entire imaging sensor business.

Sony made a big move today costing the company 19 billion yen or approximately $155 million USD. This is right on par with recent reports that said Sony had built-up a brand new division called the Sony Semiconductor Corporation. Instead of facing Toshiba as a rival, Sony decided to buy out the company’s whole imaging sensor business. Sony wants to be the primary supplier for camera image sensors, which has become a big market for smartphones. Sony’s sensors are already included on a variety of smartphones from tech giants like Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi. The image sensors are also used in many DSLR cameras from Nikon.

Toshiba is reportedly thinking about merging with Fujitsu and/or Vaio in the future. The company is also considering selling a share of its memory chip business. Do you think this is the right move?

Samsung agrees to pay Apple $548 million in settlement

Samsung has been fighting Apple in court for years, but it sounds like it’s getting near to letting it all go. The South Korean electronics maker has agreed to pay Cupertino $548 million — or a little over half the original $1 billion amount the court wanted it to pay — as soon as December 14th to settle an almost five-year-old case. According to Foss Patents, the rivals have filed a joint case management statement shortly after the Court of Appeals denied Samsung’s request for a hearing on whether Apple can ask payment for invalid patents.
