HTC One smartwatch could finally arrive in February 2016

HTC One M9+-13

Over the past two years, we’ve heard several rumors talking about HTC working on their very own smartwatch. Well, the company’s first wearable gadget might be just around the corner, if @evleaks is right.

http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Evan Blass aka @evleaks, has tweeted that the HTC One watch is coming in February 2016. Since Mobile World Congress 2016 will be held between February 22 and February 25, there is a high probability that HTC’s first smartwatch will be announced then.

Rumors suggest that the HTC One watch would feature a circular display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. The upcoming gadget is said to be codenamed Halfbeak. Of course, none of this can be confirmed as of yet.

Android Wear-based smartwatches have been around since mid-2014, with several OEMs adopting the platform and releasing multiple SKUs. The smartwatch landscape has changed quite a bit since them: Samsung recently launched the Gear S2, TAG Heuer launched a $1500 smartwatch, Pebble announced their first round smartwatch called Pebble Time Round, and Motorola’s Moto 360 Sport is coming to the US for $299 on January 7th. A research report released in August this year talks about the falling consumer interest in wearable devices. Despite this, it looks like HTC will make an attempt to woo the market.

HTC was one of the companies that Google originally announced as partners working on Android Wear. Despite some false alarms, we’re obviously yet to see HTC’s take on the Android Wear concept.

Are you excited for the HTC One watch? Let us know in the comments below.

Verizon begins offering 2GB of free data for life in new promotion

Verizon-Wireless-logo-7893

Verizon today began running a new promotion for its customers with XL and XXL data packages. The carrier will be looking to giveaway free data to customers on those data packages who upgrade or add lines to their plan.

Each line that is added or upgraded on the account will get 2GB of shareable data for free. In other words, if you upgrade four lines on your account, you’ll get a total 8GB of free data. Keep in mind that this isn’t data that you just consume and then it’s gone. Verizon says this data is free for life, meaning it’ll be added onto the data allotment of your existing plan per month.

Once again, you’ll need a Verizon XL or XXL data package to take advantage of this promotion. If you’ve been on the fence about upgrading or adding a new line, this is the perfect time to jump on board, as Verizon will be offering this promotion through January 6.

For those that aren’t eligible to take advantage of this new promotion, Verizon is also offering a limited amount of Star Wars Cardboard VR viewers to subscribers for free at select locations.

Anyone plan on taking advantage of all that free data?

Amazon’s Fire 7 tablet will soon be available to purchase in China

Amazon-Fire-7-hero-ta

Amazon today announced that its fastest selling tablet yet, the Fire 7, will soon be available to purchase in China. Amazon discounted the Fire 7 to just $35 during its Black Friday sales, and as a result, it was one of the hottest selling electronics this season.

Amazon China was able to reach a deal with Baidu, a leading internet provider in China, to offer search, apps, and an online video experience for Amazon tablets in China. There’s no telling at this point how much actual content Chinese users will have access to, largely because of China’s strict Internet laws.

“With millions of readers already using Kindle e-readers in China, we’re excited to now offer another incredibly affordable option, particularly for customers learning to read English. With tools and features like Word Wise and Blue Shade, plus a large selection of Chinese and English content, we think readers will love the new Fire tablet, ” said Neil Lindsay, Vice President of Amazon Devices.

Customers will be able to purchase the Fire 7 from Amazon Chine for CNY$499.

Be sure to stay tuned with Talk Android, as we’ve got a review of Amazon’s Fire 7 tablet coming down the pipeline!

Samsung uploads new Galaxy Tab S2 Santa TVC

samsung_galaxy_tab_s2_ad_screenshot

Just this morning Samsung uploaded a new Galaxy Tab S2 TVC.

Samsung’s latest TVC for the Galaxy Tab S2 takes a holiday approach. The ad features a little girl repeatedly asking, who we could assume is her father, when Santa is coming. After a long night, the father reads his daughter a Christmas story from his Galaxy Tab S2 to pass the time. Samsung says “if it’s waiting time, it’s Tab time.”

Samsung is clearly pushing its Galaxy Tab S2 and wants us to realize how much the tablet has to offer that can fill the time. The Galaxy Tab S2 comes in black and white color options and is up for purchase today. You can find it in a majority of retail stores such as Best Buy or search it online on Amazon. Samsung will most likely have the slate on a discounted sale price sometime between now and the holidays so keep an eye out if you want to get the best deal. You can watch the full TVC down below or check out another advertisement for the handset here.

An ‘XCOM’ game in Excel beats playing with spreadsheets

Who said that spreadsheet apps had to be dry and boring? Certainly not Reddit user Crruzi. As a test of Visual Basic skills, the budding programmer wrote and released an XCOM game, EXLCOM, for Microsoft Excel. That’s right — the same software you use to create charts and graphs will also let you fight invading aliens. It’s not what you’d call visually rich (just about everything on the map is represented by crude squares), but it’s a surprisingly thorough recreation of the game’s tactical battles, complete with unique character stats and terrain you can blow up. There’s even a basic level editor.

Finally, a smartphone you can wash with soap and water

What’s better than a waterproof smartphone? How about one you can clean with soap? Kyocera, which has done a line in toughphones for several year, revealed exactly that. Launching in (particularly soap-themed) pink, white and blue color options in Japan, don’t let the kawaii design fool you — the phone is pretty designed to take some damage. And a shower.

Researchers claim they’ve built the first 3D color hologram

Princess Leia was apparently indisposed, but Korean researchers are laying claim to the world’s first 360-degree color hologram — a floating Rubik’s cube. A 16-company consortium called ETRI, led by LG Display division, has created “tabletop holographic display” that can be viewed from all angles. According to ET News, it’s a true hologram and not a “pseudo hologram that make[s] 3D effects through 2D images.” In other words, it’s not a “Pepper’s Ghost” illusion famously used for the Tupac hologram. Since the view changes when you move around it — as if it were a real object — it also differs from “floating 3D-movie” type holograms.

France wants to make its own cheap electric car

The world’s politicians are currently huddled in Paris arguing over how much effort they’re prepared to make to stop the seas from boiling. As such, France has decided to throw down a well-tailored gauntlet to its partners by announcing a competition to build an electric car that costs under $7,000. The country’s ecology minister, Ségoléne Royal (pictured), revealed that she’ll launch a project that’ll encourage private companies to build an environmentally-friendly ride for the population. How will they be able to keep the costs that low, you ask? By ditching the built-in battery in favor of a country-wide network of stations that’ll let people swap cells during their journeys.
