AT&T took a $10 billion hit, but it’s hoping you won’t notice

lisbon january 26 2014 ...

In an extra-special Friday-night-before-a-holiday-weekend news dump, AT&T just announced that its Q4 results will include about $10 billion in charges. That includes a $7.9 billion “related to actuarial gains and losses on pension and postemployment benefit plans”, plus a $2.1 billion charge for abandoning some copper lines it says it doesn’t need anymore. Of course, you’re probably already well into whatever your weekend plans are, so you’ll barely even notice this happened once you get back to work on Tuesday — which is just how AT&T hoped it would go.

User agent profile for Samsung Galaxy S 6 lists Quad HD display

samsung_galaxy_s6_uaprof_quadhd

More news has surfaced about the Samsung Galaxy S 6, possibly the next major flagship device to be announced this year. With so many people looking forward to seeing what Samsung does with the next version of their flagship Galaxy S device, we expect to see lots of leaks about specs and other device details like the news about the use of Samsung Exynos chip in the Galaxy S 6 or a touch-based fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S 6. One area sure to get a lot of attention is the type of screen that Samsung gives the devices. A new user agent profile file for the AT&T variant indicates the Galaxy S 6 will get a Quad HD display as expected.

We are seeing more and more manufacturers moving to Quad HD as the minimum resolution for a top-tier device, so it is really no surprise to see this confirmed for the Galaxy S 6. Unfortunately, the UAProf file does not reveal the size of the screen, only that it will be running at 2560 x 1440 resolution. There has been some suggestions that Samsung may bump up the screen size to something like 5.5-inches which would be on par with the LG G3. Going that large though may turn off some buyers who are not looking for such a large device. Whatever size the screen ends up being, it should be stunning with the 2K display capability.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 shipments to LG and Xiaomi will still be on schedule

We heard the other day that Samsung could be ditching the latest and greatest processor from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 810, for most of its Galaxy S6 devices. This change in direction was said to be partly due to severe overheating issues that the chip is exhibiting and also because contracted manufacturer, TSMC, is struggling to […]

Is Sony bringing the new Z4 to MWC?

Sony-Xperia-Z4

Well, if you’re a Sony Xperia fan we might have some good news for you.  It looks like the new Xperia Z4 just passed through certification in Japan.  When Sony passed up the opportunity to announce a new handset at CES, Mobile World Congress became a possibility.  At the moment there isn’t a scheduled Sony event at MWC, but that could change in the coming days.  While we won’t be seeing this handset stateside anytime soon, it at least gives us something to look forward to.  It’ll be fun comparing the Xperia Z4 to HTC’s, LG’s and Samsung’s expected flagship phones for the new year.

The Xperia Z4 isn’t expected to be a complete redesign, but we can expect a decent spec bump.  If the big-brother Z4 isn’t your cup of tea, keep in mind that the Z4 compact is on the horizon as well.  When we hear something solid,  we’ll let you know!

Buyer’s Guide: Deals on Older iPads, Retina iMac, Apple Accessories, and Apps [Mac Blog]

As we mentioned in last week’s Buyer’s Guide post, the deals in the month of January aren’t great, but there are still a few discounts to be had on various products like the previous-generation iPads, the Retina iMac, the MacBook Air, and a few Retina MacBook Pro models.

We’ve also got a handful of accessory deals for you this week, on iPhone cases, iPad keyboard cases, Thunderbolt docks, and the Jawbone Big Jambox, plus some deals on Mac and iOS apps.

iMac

As of yesterday, Apple is selling the new 27-inch Retina iMac in its online refurbished store, offering discounts of 15 percent off, which beats any Retina iMac price that can be found in store this week.

Selection varies, but there are quite a few configurations available for purchase at a discount, which gives consumers looking for a Retina iMac deal a lot to choose from beyond the standard configuration.

imac_retina_waterfall
For example, the 4.0GHz Retina iMac with 8GB RAM and 1TB Fusion drive can be purchased for $2,339, a discount of $410 compared to the price when purchased new, and the stock 3.5GHz/8GB/1TB Retina iMac is available refurbished for $2,119, a discount of $380.

All of Apple’s refurbished machines come with a 1 year warranty, but stock fluctuates often, so potential buyers may need to wait for a desired machine to show up in the store.

iPads

We don’t recommend buying an iPad Air 2 or Retina iPad mini 3 this week if you can help it because there are no sales going on, but Best Buy is still offering now-discontinued higher-capacity Cellular versions of the iPad Air and the iPad mini 2 at discounted prices up to $130 off the standard price.

iPad Air Cellular Silver 64GB (AT&T) – $499.99
iPad Air Cellular Space Gray 64GB (AT&T) – $499.99
iPad Air Cellular Silver 128GB (AT&T) – $599.99

How to turn off Facebook’s in-app browser for external links

In August of last year, Facebook started rolling out an in-app browser that let you view links completely in the app without being thrown out to your own installed browser of choice. That’s all fine and good, but if you want the additional features, bookmarking, familiarity or added security of choosing your own browser to open links, you’ll need to dive into the Facebook settings and change this setting. It’s a quick process with just a few steps, and this is how you do it.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Wireless Charging Accessories

Wireless charging has been around for a while now but you’ll be hard pressed to find very many phones with this technology built in. One of those phones being the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. However, all hope is not lost and there’s several different ways that you can bring wireless charging to your Galaxy Note 4. We go over some of the best wireless charging accessories so check them out down below!

You also might like: 7 popular cases to protect your Galaxy Note 4

Galaxy Note 4 Wireless Charging Accessories-15

S Charger Cover for Galaxy Note 4

The S Charger cover is an official wireless charging accessory from Samsung and this replaces the standard back on your Note 4. The S charger cover preserves the stock look and feel of the Note 4 with only one minor difference. The charger cover is thicker than the regular Note 4 back. This added thickness not only makes the overall phone thicker but it also makes the camera flush to the body of the phone which is a good thing. I did not find this added thickness to be a huge problem but for those of you out there who like to use cases, it could ultimately be a deal breaker as the phone will no longer fit most cases. Otherwise the charger cover works just as advertised. Place it on any Qi compatible charger and your Note 4 will start charging wirelessly. The output is rated at 800 mAh so it’s not going to charge nearly as fast as being physically plugged in but it should still be fast enough for overnight charging. Available colors include charcoal and white.

Buy from Amazon – $43.96

Wireless Charging S-View Flip Cover for Galaxy Note 4

This is essentially the same case as the normal S-view Flip Cover that we covered previously with the exception of wireless charging built in. Just like the S Charger cover is thicker than the normal Note 4 back the S-View flip cover with wireless charging is thicker than the standard S-View flip cover but if you didn’t have them side by side you’d hardly notice the difference. To install just simply remove the stock Note 4 back and snap on the S-View flip cover in its place and you’ll be ready to charge wirelessly on any Qi-enabled charger. Just like the S Charger cover this is also rated at an output of 800 mAh so it’s best to be used in situations where you have plenty of time to charge your phone. Available colors include charcoal and white.

Buy from Amazon – $60.55

Qi-infinity Wireless Charging Receiver for Galaxy Note 4

If you want to wirelessly charge your Note 4 without adding any bulk at all and still be able to use  protective cases then the Qi-infinity wireless charging receiver is your best bet. This little receiver sits on top of the battery and can be held in place by the pressure of the battery cover itself but you can choose to tape it down if you wish. To install, just line the receiver up as shown on the box making sure the copper connectors on the top and left sides are properly aligned with the copper connectors inside the Note 4. Place the battery door back on and you’re ready to wirelessly charge. The biggest drawback to this receiver is that it’s output is rated at only 600 mAh so it’s much slower than the official wireless charging methods from Samsung but it’s definitely worth it to not have any additional bulk to deal with. Out of all the wireless charging options this one is my personal favorite.

Buy from Amazon – $12.95

S Charger Pad Wide

Once you have enable Qi wireless charging on your Note 4 you’ll need an actual wireless charger to complete the process. While the S Charger Pad Wide will work with any Qi enabled device, it is perfectly optimized for the Note 4 because of how spacious it is. The Note 4 fits directly on top with plenty of room to spare and you’ll never have any doubt that your Note 4 is actually charging. The charger itself is thin and sleek with a rubber material on the underside to prevent it from sliding around on your desk and it features an indicator light to notify you that charging has taken place just in case you decide to charge other devices that don’t have indicator lights of their own.

Buy from eBay

And that wraps up some of the best wireless charging options for the Galaxy Note 4. Are you a fan of wireless charging? If so, which option is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!
