RCA Announces 4 new UnlockedSmartphones

81nkujR24oL._SL1500_grandeRCA has been getting in on the fun at CES today, announcing two different versions of two phones for a total of four devices. The first phone, the G1, comes with either 3G or 4G and features a 5.5″ 1080 x 720 screen and a 1.3 GHz quad core processor with 8 GB of storage and expandable storage up to 32 GB. The device also sports an 8 MP camera with a flash for shooting HD video and a 2 MP front camera. All of this is powered by a capable 2,400 mAh battery.

The second, the Q1 is similar to the G1 in specs and features with a few exceptions: the screen is smaller—5″— with the same resolution, and dual SIM support is included.

Both devices have Wi-Fi and hotspot connectivity capabilities, along with Google Play Services. They will both be sold unlocked for $160 and $140 on Amazon, Sears, and Rakuten.

Finally, the Moto G and E have some competition! What do you think about these new phones? Would you consider getting one for yourself on your GSM carrier?

CES 2015: Otterbox Reveals 2,600 mAh ‘Resurgence’ Power Case for iPhone 6 [iOS Blog]

Today at CES, Otterbox announced the iPhone 6 version of its Resurgence Power Case series. The case comes with 2,600 mAh of battery power and military-grade drop protection. The previous version of the Resurgence case featured a 2,000 mAh battery.

OtterBox Resurgence Family

Resurgence boasts 2,600 milliamp hours (mAh) of battery power, providing more than two-times the battery life of the iPhone 6. The two-piece snap design simplifies case assembly and removal. Resurgence is made up of a specially formulated polycarbonate to improve impact resistance and absorb energy from drops and bumps. The case is rigorously tested to meet MIL STD 810G-516.6, a third-party test that drops the case on all faces, edges and corners from four feet.2 The new design incorporates compact advanced circuitry, resulting in a smaller profile.

The case also has auto-stop technology, which shuts off the case when the phone is fully charged, allowing users to save battery power from the case for when it’s needed. It also supports wireless and wired syncing without removing the case and a headphone jack extender, as the case adds length to the bottom of the phone.

The pricing and availability of the Resurgence Power Case for iPhone 6 is currently unclear, though Otterbox says its website will have further information in due time. Pricing may mirror the cost of the iPhone 5 and 5s version of the case, which retails for $99.95. However, Otterbox has not yet revealed plans for an iPhone 6 Plus version of the case.

Sony goes all in with Android TV for their 2015 Bravia Smart TVs

Sony Logo

In what most are considering a huge victory, or at least a monstrous step forward for Android TV, Sony has committed to using the Google built platform for all of its Bravia line smart TVs in 2015.

The press conference packed CES 2015 launch day has been filled with all sorts of announcements from a large handful of the largest players in technology. Among these press events has been a lot of talk of the television set, and Sony was no exception.

Samsung had more than one TV on their stage, talking about the size, design and display quality, while they kept somewhat quiet about the fact that they were pushing forward with their own in-house operating system, Tizen, for their smart TVs. Sony went the opposite route, utilizing the Android based open option, built by Google.

Android TV is not Google’s first foray into smart TVs, and this is not the first time that Sony has committed to a Google TV platform, but this is the and largest commitment to the platform at this scale. Android TV was introduced at Google I/O back in June 2014. It has been slowly making its way forward from there, more recently launching the Nexus Player, an Android TV based set-top box.

Sony’s commitment with Android TV brings a bunch of awesome features to users as well. Including the power of the Google Play Store. Sony Bravia TV owners will be able to install their favorite Android games and so much more. Perhaps one of the best features will be the ability for Sony TVs to leverage built-in Google Cast functionality.

Google has seen much success with their Chromecast streaming device, and even announced an audio only hardware approach today. Best of all is the recent addition of full screen mirroring to the big screen for most devices.

We are loving what we are seeing so far out of Las Vegas and CES 2015, stay tuned for more coverage.

Does the addition of the Android TV OS make you want to look at a new Sony Bravia TV?

CyanogenMod releases CM12 Nightlies

cyanogenmod-12-cm12-android-lollipopThe folks over at CyanogenMod have been hard at work on your New Year’s present and finally have something to show for it: nightlies!

The release of the nightlies is accompanied by the news that CM12 is 85% complete, and should be finished up by the end of the month. Some of the features not yet in the nightlies are: Theme Engine, Quick Settings customization and Ribbon Mode, Navigation bar reorganization, Sound panel customization, and Lock-screen quick unlock. Smaller tweaks are also missing, but will probably not be noticeable.

Other than that, these nightlies are the perfect chance for those of you with pioneering spirits to go ahead and check out what CyanogenMod can do with Lollipop. Some new features to be added with CM12 (just to wet your whistle) are ambient display, a new messaging app, and a weather option in the status bar.

As always with a nightly. expect bugs. If you are already running a version of CM11 and your device is on the list, you may be able to flash the update directly from your current ROM without needing to wipe your device. For more instructions, follow the link below.

Dish announces live streaming television with Sling TV

dish-logo

Cable television is at the crossroads of its inevitable evolution. Out of all the major entertainment delivery methods, cable and satellite companies seem to be the slowest to adopt streaming models. TV and Internet are defined as different ways to deliver content. They can be bundled by providers, but distinctly they are different avenues in which content is presented. Dish is looking to buck that trend, it seems, by offering what they are calling a companion to their satellite TV service. Sling TV is an “Over-the-Top” service that will give consumers live streaming TV over the internet. For $20 a month Sling TV customers will be able to watch ESPN, ESPN2, Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel (among others).

What’s great about this service is that it is scheduled to support a slew of Android powered devices at launch. Amazon’s Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Google’s Nexus Player, and Android in general are on the supported list from Dish. Also eligible for Sling TV support are the Roku, Microsoft’s Xbox One, iOS devices, Mac OSX, and PC powered machines. Just download the app and you’re ready to go.

Dish is targeting millennials with this service. Not everyone wants to be pinched into what services they can or cannot have. Add on packs for things like children’s programming and sports start at just $5 a month. No contracts or credit cards are required, and this service can be stopped and started at any time. The drawbacks so far seem to be the lack of DVR or cloud offerings. Dish is trying to combat this be offering an On-Demandish 3-Day replay feature. That is, anything aired in the last 3 days should be viewable.  Let the cord cutting begin.  What do you think? Are you in the target demo for Sling TV?

CES 2015: Hexoskin Debuts Line of Connected Biometric Shirts for Kids and Teens [iOS Blog]

Biometric shirt manufacturer Hexoskin today announced its new line of smart shirts for kids and teenagers at CES 2015, allowing coaches and parents to track physical metrics in real-time through an iOS app.

hexoskinjunior
The Hexoskin Junior features built-in sensors inside of a lightweight, water-resistant shirt, with an optimized fit for regulation of moisture and heat. The sensors themselves can track a number of metrics including heart rate, step count, sleep duration, and calories burned, along with advanced statistics like heart rate recovery, acceleration, breathing volume, and sleep.

exoskinapp
All of the metrics can be analyzed on Hexoskin’s free mobile app for iOS, which can provide a look at aspects like a user’s heartbeat in real-time, or a running session with GPS data to measure distance. The app and the Hexoskin shirt can also be used to measure an individual’s VO2max level, which is the maximum volume of oxygen that can be used.

The Hexoskin Junior is available by itself for $149.99 or in a starter kit for $379.99 that contains a Bluetooth recording device and USB cable. The Hexoskin recording device is not required to track metrics with the Hexoskin shirt, but it does allow users to store 150 hours of data with low power consumption and is Apple Made for iPhone (MFi) certified. On its own, Hexoskin’s Bluetooth recording device sells for $230.00.

Cyanogen announces CM12 nightlies based on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop

The Cyanogen team stated that there would be “something special” in store for the new year, which as it turns out is the announcement of nightly builds of CyanogenMod 12, which is based on Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. The first rollout of CM12 nightlies is set to commence soon, although the team notes that work on the M release (milestone snapshot, more stable than a nightly but potentially some issues) is 85 percent complete as of now.
