Huawei says no plans for a Windows 10 phone, surprises no-one

There’s a tale doing the rounds today about Huawei’s confirmed decision to avoid making any Windows 10 powered smartphones. It’s true, the company did say that during a press briefing at its Shenzhen headquarters as reported by several media outlets who were in the room at the time. While hearing a phone maker confirm they’re skipping Windows 10 doesn’t feel great, this one in particular comes as no surprise.

After all, Huawei has already ditched Windows Phone 8 because “it wasn’t profitable” for them.

Scanbot update adds reminders and 1Password integration

One of our favorite document scanning apps for iPhone and iPad, Scanbot, has been updated to version 3.5 with quite a few imporovements. For one, you can now set tasks and due dates related to documents you take a picture of through the app, provided you’re running the Pro version.

Those reminders tie in with the native Reminders app and Evernote, providing proper system notifications for when that bill is due or that document needs any other kind of attention. There’s also 1Password integration, so you can get connected with related cloud services with minimal fuss.

Here’s a look at the full changelog for Scanbot 3.5.

For All Users

  • Added support for simpler handling of logins to cloud services

  • Overall improvements to scanning and cloud uploads

  • Fixed a problem which led to occasional crashes when scanning larger documents with many pages

For Pro Users

  • Added ability to add a reminder to a document using local push notifications, Reminders app as well as Evernote

Smartphone Futurology: The science behind your next phone’s processor and memory

The electronic brains behind the supercomputer in your pocket

Welcome to Smartphone Futurology. In this new series of science-filled articles, Mobile Nations guest contributor Shen Ye walks through current technologies in use within our phones, as well as the cutting-edge stuff still being developed in the lab. There’s quite a bit of science ahead, as a lot of the future discussions are based on scientific papers with a vast amount of technical jargon, but we’ve tried to keep things as plain and simple as possible. So if you want to dive deeper into just how the guts of your phone function, this is the series for you.

A new year brings the certainty of new devices to play with, and so it’s time to look ahead at what we might see in the smartphones of the future. The first instalment in the series covered what’s new in battery tech, while the second article looked at what’s next in the world of mobile displays. The series’ third part focuses on the electronic brains of our mobile devices — the SoC (system on a chip) and flash storage. The rise of smartphones, and fierce competition among rival manufacturers, has accelerated the pace of technological progress in both these areas. And we’re not done yet — there are ever wilder technologies on the horizon that may some day find their way into future devices. Read on to find out more.

Urbanspoon yanked their Windows Phone app too but will return under Zomato

Back in December, Urbanspoon removed their app from the Windows Phone app store. Part of a growing and disturbing trend, it had appeared that the famous restaurant finder app had seen its last days on Windows Phone. Urbanspoon was a rather nicely designed app, but the last update from the company was back in 2012, so Windows Phone support had already withered.

For better or worse, Urbanspoon was acquired by Zomato just a few weeks ago for a reported $50 million. Interestingly, Zomato not only has a Windows Phone app but a highly-rated one as well (and it looks like they will have a Windows 8.1 app on the way).
