Smart Kegel exerciser can hurt women as much as it helps

Minna Life's kGoal smart Kegel exerciser

If men can have a fitness device for their nether regions, women certainly can, too. Minna Life has released the kGoal, a $149 “smart Kegel exerciser” that helps you work your pelvic floor muscles (read: the vaginal area) in order to both improve your sexual performance and fight disorders like incontinence. It provides real-time feedback through sound, touch and visuals, and you’ll know you’re on the right track through a companion smartphone app that gauges your progress. If all goes well, kGoal should take the mystery out of Kegels — you’ll build strong muscles by developing a proper technique and setting achievable goals.

That’s a big “if,” mind you. Minna describes the kGoal as “comfortable” thanks to an air pillow lets you adjust the device to fit your anatomy. However, that’s not what The Verge‘s Arielle Duhaime-Ross experienced in an early hands-on — she says her vagina was constantly “on fire” despite following advice. Minna is quick to note that this isn’t necessarily a one-size-fits-all product (the company is targeting a broad cross-section of women), but you might want to hold out for a future version if you’re not willing to experiment with technology down there.

Facebook and Instagram get knocked offline.. for about an hour

Snowmageddon might not be all that fun those experiencing it on the East Coast, but it could well be affecting the rest of us too. Starting around 1am ET, Facebook and Instagram were both inaccessible, as well as apps that require FB credentials. Tinder, lonely hearts, also went down in the process — globally. (We saw problems accessing servers across the US, Europe and Asia.) We’ve also seen Hipchat and, er, AIM also knocked offline at the same time. Snow in the servers? We don’t know just yet. Facebook and Instagram have just come back after an hour. Interestingly, as TechCrunch noted, Facebook’s other app, WhatsApp went strong through out.

Facebook and Instagram experience denial of service attack, outage

Facebook and Instagram, the popular social network and it’s photo-centric sub-division, are currently experiencing a denial of service attack that’s affecting access for some users. If you’ve been trying to check your feeds and you’ve been getting errors, don’t worry — it’s them, not you.

Facebook and Instagram currently offline — but you can complain about it on Twitter

Facebook and Instagram, the popular social network and it’s photo-centric sub-division, are currently offline. If you’ve been trying to check your feeds and you’ve been getting errors, don’t worry — it’s them, not you.

Both Facebook and Instagram have solid infrastructures and seldom experience downtime. I’m still not able to access either but no doubt they’re working to restore service as quickly as possible. And in the meantime, if your statuses and photos are piling up, you can still get your social fix on Twitter.

Let me know if you can get to Twitter or Facebook and, if not, when it comes back online for you.

AT&T will acquire Nextel Mexico for nearly $2 billion

AT&T_Logo_01_TAAT&T has announced they will be acquiring Nextel’s Mexico business for roughly 1.8 billion dollars. This deal includes all of Nextel’s equipment and stores in Mexico, as well as about 3 million customers in the country. Nextel’s network covers 76 million people, however, so the acquisition will help AT&T create a more competitive service in Mexico.

AT&T expects the deal to close in the middle of 2015, assuming no legal roadblocks show up.

Huawei may announce the Ascend Mate 7 Compact at MWC 2015

huawei ascend mate 7Huawei may be bringing a smaller version of its Ascend Mate 7 to MWC this year, if rumors about the mini phone are true. While the Ascend Mate 7 features a massive 6-inch screen, the Compact may shrink down just a 5.5-inch display. It’s tough to call that a compact device, but it’s still technically smaller than the larger variant.

The rumors don’t suggest anything else about the device, such as the processor or screen resolution, but it’s possible it’ll carry similar hardware as the normal Ascend Mate 7. MWC 2015 isn’t too far off, so hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Samsung files for 11 new patents and trademarks

Samsung has hinted at lowering their overall mobile device lineup by about 30%.  The driver behind this is cost.  Having less devices to launch should lower the overall cost of doing business in the ever expanding Android market.  That does not mean they have slowed down.  Samsung has recently filed for trademarks for five new devices:  The Galaxy E3, J7, J5 and J3.  Rumors of a Galaxy J1 tend to suggest that the J series of devices will have specs closer to the lower end of the mobile device spectrum.  There is no guarantee that these devices will come to market; however, if Samsung is focusing on lowering cost, the introduction of new low end devices may be the way to go.

Among the 11 new trademarks and patents that Samsung has filed for, the most interesting is Samsung Nudge.  This was listed as a “software used for capturing gestures, facial, and voice recognition for the touchless control of computer applications, computers, phones, smartwatches, and other mobile and multimedia devices.”  Is this Samsung’s attempt to directly compete with Google or Motorola?  We have seen touchless controls for Android before.  This may very well be the TouchWiz control set Samsung has needed since launching the less than successful S-Voice some time ago.  Be on the lookout for these features at more when Samsung presents at the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, this year.

CyanogenMod 12 now available for Galaxy Note 4 on Sprint and T-Mobile

CyanogenMod Nightlies

If you’ve got your hands on Samsung’s latest Note device, the Galaxy Note 4 from Sprint or T-Mobile, but were hoping for a different software experience, Cyanogen inc. has come to your rescue. CyanogenMod 12 nightlies are now available for your device.

Every day that passes, it seems, we see further indicators that the official release of CyanogenMod 12 is approaching. A new boot animation arrived yesterday, and today, a couple new variants of a major flagship device gain support from the main-stream Android alternative.

CyanogenMod 12 nightlies have been available for a selection of devices for a few weeks now, bringing the latest that the custom ROM has to offer, bugs and all. Based on Android Lollipop, it also brings the latest that Android and Material Design have to offer, bugs and all. Things are looking interesting for the AOSP based OS, with Cyanogen recently announcing plans to pull away from the Google services focused Android stream.

samsung galaxy note 4 first impressions (8 of 20)

It is always great to see Cyanogen roll out official support for their OS to new devices. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in particular is one of the better devices out there, one for which I believe users will be very grateful to see some ROM love.

Head on over to the Cyanogen website to get started. Sprint users go here, and T-Mobile users here.

Will you flash your Sprint or T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to CyanogenMod 12 nightlies, hold off for stable CyangenMod 12 or just stick with the stock stream of Android that your device shipped with?

This smart toolbox promotes drinking on the job

You can now add “toolbox” to the growing list of mundane objects looking to up their IQ. Enter the Coolbox, a tech-laden, “smart” toolbox that launches today on Indiegogo. In addition to toting your tools, it packs a 12v rechargeable battery, two USB ports, 270-degree LED lighting, a 10-foot extension cord with three built-in plugs and an iPad stand. The box also has a Bluetooth speaker so you can blast music over the soothing sounds of your miter saw. And then there’s our favorite feature: the Coolbox’s built-in bottle opener, because what pairs better with power tools than beer? (Though maybe wait to crack one open until after your project is finished, huh?) Pledging $179 will get you a basic Coolbox and move the project toward its $50,000 fundraising goal. However, its creators have an even loftier target in mind: surpassing the most-successful KickStarter project of all time. So who’s the reigning champ? A souped-up drink cooler, of course.
