Intel reports record-breaking revenue for 2014, mobile still continues to plummet

Intel has just published its total revenue for the year 2014, totaling $55.9 billion. This is a record-setting year for Intel, boasting a net income of $11.7 billion, up 22% from 2013. In fact, the company’s Q4 of 2014 was also record-setting, up 6% from 2013. While all seems to be well in the company overall, Intel’s mobile division continues to plummet.
Take a look at these stats given in the press release:
- PC Client Group revenue of $34.7 billion, up 4 percent from 2013
- Data Center Group revenue of $14.4 billion, up 18 percent from 2013
- Internet of Things Group revenue of $2.1 billion, up 19 percent from 2013
- Mobile and Communications Group revenue of $202 million, down 85 percent from 2013
- Software and services operating segments revenue of $2.2 billion, up 1 percent from 2013
As you can see, the company’s Mobile and Communications Group is the only division that hasn’t generated a gain throughout the entire year, which is currently down a massive 85% from 2013. To clarify, Intel’s Mobile and Communications Group includes Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, cellular connectivity and mobile processor technologies. Brian Krzanich, CEO of Intel, seems to remain confident in the matter, as he explains:
… There is more to do in 2015. We’ll improve our profitability in mobile, and keep Intel focused on the next wave of computing.
We caught wind of these losses last year soon after the company posted their Q1 results for 2014. Last year’s Q1 numbers posted a $929 million operating loss, adding up to only $156 million in revenue.
Intel has launched a number of different products from the Compute Stick to the recently-announced Curie module that may make its way into a wearable near you. Oh, and remember that super thin Dell Venue 8 7840 tablet we saw at CES 2015? That runs an Intel Atom Z3580 processor and totes the company’s new RealSense 3D camera. Intel hasn’t been completely scarce in the mobile world, but their efforts so far haven’t been generating enough revenue.
We interviewed Chris Walker, General Manager of tablets at Intel, at CES 2015. Mr. Walker is also keeping positive, as he relays to us the company’s 2015 plans for tablets (which is included in the Mobile and Communications Group). Intel plans to branch out of solely making processors to enhancing the Android experience with other unique software features. For more information on Intel and their tablet and mobile plans, check out the interview below.
So what do you think Intel could do better in the mobile space to get out of this funk? Let us know your thoughts!

CloudMagic goes premium: introduces paid subscription for $4.99 per month

CloudMagic, one of the most popular email clients on Android (and one of our favorites here at Android Authority), has long been known for its abundance of supported email services, instant push notifications, multi account support and custom folder sync settings. The best part is that, up until now, all of CloudMagic’s convenient features have been completely free. In a blog post released earlier today, the developers at CloudMagic, Inc have announced CloudMagic Pro, a premium email service that is aimed at power users.

CloudMagic Pro entails a few features that were already offered in the app for free, plus a few other enhancements. Here are the features you’ll get if you upgrade to CloudMagic Pro:
- Add unlimited email accounts
- Setup email accounts once and login on another device to have everything ready
- Preferences sync’d across devices
- Download attachments in background
- Remote wipe your data if you lose your phone/tablet
- Priority support
Unlimited email accounts were supported in previous versions of the app, so users will now lose that functionality if they decide not to pay. New with the update comes the ability to remotely wipe data if your phone gets lost or stolen, which is likely a feature that will be welcomed by many power users.
In their statement, the developers give a bit of an explanation regarding the move to a premium subscription plan:
We are often asked how we intend to make money and we’ve always maintained we’ll never make our users the product, and instead have premium plans for features that power users will require. So today we announce a new set of features and CloudMagic Pro.
If you’re interested in making the jump to CloudMagic Pro, it will cost you $4.99 per month. If you plan on sticking with the app for awhile, you can pay a flat rate of $44.99 upfront and save $15 for the year. If you’re interested, head to the Google Play Store to download this awesome email client. For those of you that have more than one account synced with CloudMagic, will you make the jump to CloudMagic Pro? Let us know your thoughts!
LG G2 Gets Sweet News
LG’s hit smartphone of 2013 has finally gotten its turn for a treat. The Korean version of the LG G2 has officially received Lollipop. That means that all of the new, exciting features of Android’s latest version is now available for all users of the fancy device. If you own the Korean version, you should probably go check for the update if you haven’t already. This news, of course, is hardly surprising, considering the video that surfaced a few days back of the LG G2 running an official version of Lollipop.
Here’s to hoping that the new update is bug-free and completely stable!

New Windows Previewer app reveals details about Windows 10 Insider program for Phones
A few days ago, an app called Phone Insider was found in the Store. Not too long after, Microsoft’s Gabriel Aul even confirmed on Twitter that the app will be discussed at next week’s January 21 event in Redmond.
The focus of that event is Windows 10, and many believe how it will work on Windows Phone devices will also be detailed.
Now, a new version of the app – with a different name – has been found in the Store. Dubbed Windows Previewer Beta , the app appears to be an internal test version of the app. Windows Phone app developer and XDA forum moderator Jeremy Sinclair has also managed to pull out a few screenshots and details from the app.
Bankruptcy looming for RadioShack, Sprint may purchase stores
RadioShack is nearly one hundred years old, but that does not mean it is guaranteed to hit the milestone. The last few years have been especially difficult for the electronics retailer and now it seems that a bankruptcy filing is on the way. To combat bankruptcy and gain some cash, RadioShack is working to sell some of its stores to Sprint. The carrier, who has also had its fair share of troubles recently, would be able to expand with the takeover of many leases belonging to RadioShack. Sprint has been very open about expanding through retail stores; therefore, it is not shocking to hear of interest in RadioShack locations.

10 best Android fashion apps

Fashion and technology had a long history of remaining totally separate. Over the last decade or so, smartphones have become status symbols which allowed technology into fashion. The best part is that very same smartphone can help you find, shop for, and stay up to date on the latest trends. Here are the best Android fashion apps to help you stay in style.
Amazon Shopping
[Price: Free]
First on the list is the venerable Amazon Shopping. Even though its touted as a store where you can buy anything, Amazon actually has a fairly solid selection of fashion items. The tricky part is finding them which you can do with some creative searching and a keen eye. You’ll also easily find less expensive options to high-price fashion items which is good enough if you don’t make that kind of money. It may not be for the fashion elite, but it’s still worth a gander.

eBay
[Price: Free]
You wouldn’t think it, but eBay is actually a pretty good fashion app. It’s a great place to try to find one-of-a-kind items and items that are no longer sold in stores. Much like Amazon, eBay has a large range of products available for purchase and you can almost always find something that you’re looking for or at least something close enough to it. It’s a free platform and the things listed for sale changes constantly. It’s a good place to scope out that great bargain or that rare item.

Etsy
[Price: Free]
Etsy is one of those sites that is a sanctuary for hipster style. Pretty much everything on sale on Etsy is limited run, limited edition, or one of a kind and that’s the kind of stuff that drive some fashion-minded people nuts. More often than not you’ll find jewelry and other accessories but there are some clothing items strewn about. It currently boasts around 800,000 artists selling over 17 million unique items and one of those may be a permanent addition to your fashion inventory.

The Hunt
[Price: Free]
The Hunt was originally an iOS app that was ported to Android. It’s a trends and fashion app that allows you to snap a picture of an outfit or some cloths and other users will tell you where you can buy that outfit and how much it (probably) costs. Of course, you can return the favor and browse photos of fashion items that other people have posted as well. A lot of the more recent trends end up here and it’s a great way to browse for some fun stuff to wear.

KicksOnFire
[Price: Free with in app purchases]
KicksOnFire is a shoe store that carry many of the latest fashions in shoes. It’s aimed almost exclusively at men who love sneakers but there are women who use it as well. KicksOnFire is one of the more comprehensive fashion apps on the list. It shows a variety of shoes that you can purchase but also has a blog that talks about sneaker fashion, a section just for new releases, and a “hype” section that shows what’s popular right now.

Overstock
[Price: Free]
Overstock has long been known for their bargain prices and rotating stock and that has not changed. With the app you can browse a number of things and clothing and accessory items are among them. You won’t find the top name brands here generally but the sheer number of options in style and taste help make up for it. Those who have to have the latest in name brands should steer clear but bargain fashion shoppers could definitely find some great stuff here.

Polyvore
[Price: Free]
Polyvore is kind of like The Hunt mixed with Amazon. There is a community of people that spend their days building outfits and the like but the app actually gives you the option to buy them right there in the app. It’s the ultimate window shopping experience on Android for the fashion-minded. The items available are actually fairly expensive and seem like name brand items. You can follow people who create trends or you can start creating your own in the app. The choice is yours but this app is a lot of fun if you like cloths shopping.

Pose
[Price: Free]
Pose is kind of like a mixture between eBay and Polyvore. There is a community of people who put together fun outfits and you can go buy them if you prefer. However, the unique part is that Posh allows people to buy and sell their own stuff. That means it’s conceivable to clean out your closet and fill it with the contents of someone else’s closet. There is also a section dedicated to keeping you up to date on what the latest trendsetters and celebrities are wearing.

Poshmark
[Price: Free]
Poshmark is like eBay except instead of trying to sell you everything, it focuses mostly on clothing and accessories. Much like Pose, you can sell things from your closet and buy things from other closets if you prefer. However, unlike Pose, that is the sole purpose of this application. They boast that you can find pretty much whatever you’re looking for and pay less than you would retail which is something a lot of fashion-minded people would love to do.

Zappos
[Price: Free]
Zappos is an online clothing store with a large inventory and free 1-day shipping available to some people. They boast having the latest styles from companies like The North Face, Nike, and Stuart Weitzman in a retail setting so it’s essentially like going to the mall on your smartphone. They also offer you the ability to return items for a different size if you need to which, given the lack of dressing rooms when you go online shopping, is a really nice bonus.

T-Mobile will soon offer no-frills Simply Prepaid plans
T-Mobile really wants your prepaid business, so it’s expanding its offerings with a new lineup of affordable plans. Big Magenta calls it Simply Prepaid, and it might be the better option for people who don’t need another line for family or friends, since it’ll cost every customer a minimum of $40 a month for unlimited talk and text and up to 1GB LTE. That data allowance increases to 3GB for $50 and to 5GB for $60. According to the carrier, the lineup was designed to be as straightforward as possible, so it “has fewer bells and whistles” than the Simple Choice plans. T-Mobile didn’t exactly list which features won’t cross over, but these might include music streaming, tethering, international data and texting, and unused data rollover. That said, these new options still come with WiFi calling, so check them out on January 25th when they become available if fancy features aren’t your thing anyway.
