Apple Ramping Up Production of 12-Inch MacBook Air for Q1 2015 Delivery
Apple supplier Quanta Computer has begun ramping up production of the upcoming 12-inch MacBook Air ahead of a release during the first quarter of 2015, reports Digitimes.
The company has stepped up its efforts to recruit more workers for its production efforts on the notebook, and is looking to bring in a total of 30,000 workers during the quarter to also help with the Apple Watch. Sources close to Quanta further note that the 12-inch MacBook Air will replace the existing 11-inch MacBook Air, with Apple choosing to keep the 13-inch MacBook Air.

The next-generation MacBook Air is expected to feature a high-resolution Retina display and a new Broadwell Core M processor that will enable a thin, fanless design. Other reports have also claimed that the 12-inch MacBook Air will do away with nearly all of the parts found on Apple’s current line of MacBook Airs and contain a headphone jack, a pair of microphones, and a USB Type-C port that may handle both connectivity and charging.

Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Samsung Galaxy S5 arrives in the UK
Towards the end of December, Samsung started a wider roll out of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) in Europe. A limited roll out actually started in Poland at the beginning of December, and then moved to Spain. Now the firmware update has arrived in the UK.
Since the initial deployment in Poland, Samsung has tweaked the firmware a couple of times to squash some last minute bugs. It now seems that the upgrade is ready for mass consumption.
Samsung’s new firmware does more than just upgrade the underlying operating system. The fingerprint sensor has also been improved because of a new driver, and the Note 4’s lock screen has also been brought over to the Galaxy S5.
An upgrade to Android 5.0 for Galaxy S5 devices in Europe was expected, however it seems that Samsung is a little behind schedule. Data gleaned from France’s second largest carrier, SFR, indicated that the S5 would get Android 5.0 during December. However it looks like a January general roll out is well under way.

Motorola: Lollipop update coming to 2014 and 2013 phones really soon
A few of Motorola’s devices, including the Moto X 2014, have already received an update to Lollipop, but if you’re still waiting for the latest version of Android to hit your particular device, there’s reason to be excited. Luciano Carvalho, a software engineer at Motorola, revealed in a post on Google+ that the Lollipop update will be rolled out to 2014 and 2013 handsets “really soon.”

We all want to do our part to help those who are less fortunate healthwise, but not all of us are brilliant researchers and scientists. However, we all have at least one extremely capable tool for making progress in the world of fighting disease: a smartphone. Once Dr. Vijay Pande and Sony have their Folding@Home app pass Beta testing, all you’ll have to do is download the app from the Google Play Store and have it run on your phone whenever you want, doing calculations and folding proteins in order to aid laboratories Stanford in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s or cancer.
The app is still in testing phase right now, which means it will only work on a Sony Xperia device, but if you own a Sony smartphone, by all means download the app and try it out. The general idea behind using smartphones to run calculations is that using modest processor power from hundreds of thousands of smartphones and tablets is much more powerful and cost efficient than using supercomputers. The idea has been done successfully in 2012 with PS3 gaming systems, but since smartphones have much more market saturation, Sony and Stanford have had their eyes set on your pockets for a while.
The app will be free for everyone and will pass through beta testing in early 2015, so keep checking back to see if it Folding@Home has been released yet!

Verizon adjusts T-Mobile’s 4G LTE coverage in new promo
Near the end of 2014, Verizon was faced with some criticism regarding one of its advertisements that featured a map of a competitor’s 4G LTE coverage. The ad compared its network to that of T-Mobile; however, it was greatly skewed in favor of Verizon. The map portrayed T-Mobile’s 4G LTE coverage as extremely scarce by removing the HSPA/HSPA+ coverage. Yesterday, Big Red uploaded an updated version of the ad which shows a much more purple map of the United States (above). The coverage is still dwarfed by Verizon’s but T-Mobile has committed heavily to its growth.

Band Sensor Monitor unlocks more sensors in latest update for Microsoft Band owners
If you have a Microsoft Band, you must grab the latest updated to Band Sensor Monitor. The update just went live and with comes a slew of new features, including the ability to check your skin temperature right on the band itself!
Evidently, the latest firmware update to the Microsoft Band that came last week also allowed more sensors to be viewed. As such, the developers behind Band Sensor Monitor have already incorporated them into the app. Let’s see what is new!
USPTO stays busy in 2014, Samsung awarded 4925 patents for the year
IBM, Samsung, and even Google made it onto the top 10 list for patents awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). While IBM and Samsung take the top two spots (IBM dominated Samsung with 7534 patents awarded), Google comes in on the leader board at number 8, which is the first time the Mountain View search giant has appeared in the top 10.
The past few years have been a total pain for Samsung when it’s come to patents. In a near-constant state of being bogged down by infringement lawsuits, Samsung may be attempting to prevent such legal actions in the future by dutifully applying for as many patents as it can. Compared to 2013, Samsung’s patent awards increased 5.9% in 2014.
Google’s increase from 2013 to 2014 was 38.6%. One of the reasons behind this increase may have to do with all of the robotics and smart home technologies Google gobbled up in recent years. Not to mention, Google’s brief acquisition of Motorola was a way for them to get their hands on Project Ara. The company’s work on developing Project Ara, a prototype smartphone that utilizes a modular design similar to your home computer, probably comes with a slew of technology that Google needed to get patents for.
As has been the case for the past couple of years, Apple and Facebook did not appear on the list; however, Facebook did have a 120% increase in patents awarded compared to 2013.
