Defy Media and Smosh’s Food Battle: The Game (review)

Smosh Food Battle

“Defy Media” and YouTube’s “Smosh” together have proven the growing influence and practical applications of YouTube and online communities with their newest app “Food Battle: The Game.” The Smosh duo, Ian and Anthony each make appearances in the game, along with many of the characters and hosts from the smosh universe.

In the game, you play as Anthony, who’s mission is to save the world from the mutated junk food that is attacking. This crazy concept, along with the zany characters that make the smosh channel so charming are present all over this game. While fans of the smosh channel will certainly get a kick out of the game, the gameplay and style are certain to please most android gamers.

The hack and slash style gameplay in Food Battle is executed well, and when paired with the colorful cartoonish art style and smooth gameplay, it makes for a very pleasurable visual experience. The controls however, are one of the weak points in the game. In order to move around, you have to place your finger on the area you’d like to go, which forces your hand to block a part of the screen. This is is especially frustrating during combat, because it seems as though  it was designed to be fast-paced.

Smosh Food Battle

The game is free to play, and does not require in-app purchases to complete, though they are available. The purchases are not forced upon you, however they do give anyone who buys them a huge advantage. Crystals, for example, are used to buy almost anything in the game including: new ingredients for weapons, new clothes or even a new life if you die, but once you run out it’s very hard to find them, unless they’re bought. The prices are very steep, with the cheapest purchase in the game being about $5, which is more than most people pay for full games on the android platform.

All things considered, Food Battle is a very well made game, that deserves its current 4+ star rating in the play store. What do you think of the game? Let us know in the comments down below!

OnePlus to launch two phones this year

oneplus-twodevices

In case you misread the headline, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus will be launching TWO devices this year, not just the anticipated “OnePlus Two”- the successor to last year’s famous OnePlus One.

Last December, OnePlus executive Carl Pei confirmed the plans to launch the OnePlus One successor in the middle of 2015. “We are planning to announce the OnePlus Two in Q2 or Q3 next year,” Pei said. “So it is one year after this phone [OnePlus One].”

Earlier, we’ve heard rumors that the OnePlus Two will come with “surprises in store when it comes to hardware,” according to an unknown source speaking for Business Insider.

Recently, Carl Pei spoke to PCWorld and mentioned that the company is working another releasing another handset this year which could cater to “a different type of audience. Perhaps for those who appreciate design over specs.”

This is all the info we have now about this mysterious, fashionable OnePlus device. It’ll likely be even more affordable than the OnePlus One and offer mid-tier specs with a stylish (colorful?) plastic body.

Information about the OnePlus Two isn’t available yet, but we do know that the company has been testing different sizes for it than the One. “We’ve actually changed the display size several times as well. The final product will surprise people,” Pei said in an interview. He also mentioned the company plans to stick with the invite system at the beginning of the “Two” launch. Whether this is a good idea or not, it might be their only option if inventory is too low again.

Thoughts or comments? What do you have in mind for the OnePlus “Two” phone?

LG shows off “Active Bending” Dual Edge display

LG "Active Bending" Dual Edge Display

Just like its rival Samsung, LG has an interest in smartphones with unusual displays. We’ve already known both companies have invested in curved displays, and now it appears they are pursuing dual edge technology as well.

While the LG G Flex 2 unveiled at CES has a curved display instead, LG has developed “Dual Edge” technology. It is likely it will be used in their next flagship.

Android Community is somewhat sure that LG showcased the new display in a private show. In the beginning, this technology was known as “Active Bending.” It’s possible other manufacturers also have shown an interest in this.

The site states that LG is planning to use “Active Bending,” but it does not know how the company is going to use it.

The dual edged, six-inch display unit LG displayed, with its low 720p resolution display, was most likely just a demo unit.  However, it is likely LG will feature the technology in the LG G4, which will have a 1080p or 2K resolution.

Neil deGrasse Tyson bringing Star Talk to late night TV in April

2015 Winter TCA Tour - Day 1

Fans hoping for a Neil deGrasse Tyson fix this year needn’t worry if Cosmos will be renewed — the astrophysicist will bring his popular StarTalk podcast to the National Geographic Channel. The new show will be filmed before a live audience at the Hayden Planetarium in a Bill Maher-style roundtable format featuring comedians and celebrities. Tyson said that because the established podcast is already streamed on video, the show “is kind of low-risk, I think, for National Geographic.” He added that it’ll let him “continue to spread wonder and excitement (of Cosmos) through Star Talk.”

There’s no word on the exact format, though each episode will feature a short segment by none other than Bill Nye. It’s also unclear whether Tyson will return for Cosmos, though he was reportedly leaning against it due to the show’s punishing schedule. StarTalk will arrive this April on National Geographic, with the time to be announced later.

Report shows that poor indoor cellphone reception keeps landlines alive

AngryCellPhoneReception womaninthrisis

A recent Harris Poll finds that one-in-five people are still dealing with significant cellphone reception issues in their homes and therefore keep a landline. This follows a previous poll which showed that one-in-three are forced to take steps to “boost” their indoor cellphone reception at their primary residence.

The recent poll, commissioned by a cellular signal boosting tech company called zBoost, surveyed 2,024 adults last month and found that 18 percent of those surveyed kept their landline strictly because they have issues with their cellphones at their primary residence.

The previous poll from August of 2014 showed that while 97 percent of mobile phone owners make cellphone calls indoors, thirty-two percent said they have been forced to take “steps to boost indoor cell reception.” Some of those steps included heading outside, standing still like a statue and running for the closest window.

At the moment, AT&T and other telecom companies, are going state-to-state trying to convince regulators that it is in the public’s best interest that consumer regulations are gutted so that the telecom companies can stop servicing landlines.

CableIndustryCapitalExpenditures Vox

As Karl Bode notes:

AT&T and Verizon have been going state by state, trying to convince local governments that if they kill off regulations requiring they keep providing POTS and DSL, those communities will somehow enter telecom infrastructure investment Utopia, where they’re suddenly awash in improved technology, networks and opportunity. – DSLReports

Of course, this situation only helps the telecom companies who then won’t be forced to upgrade landlines and get to push those consumers to the significantly more expensive and data capped LTE wireless service.

Or a company can do what AT&T does and give the impression that if they are allowed to ignore landlines, they just may install fiber-optic services. Nevermind that AT&T and others continue to freeze significant capital expenditures towards non-wireless services such as U-Verse deployments.

AccuWeather gains support for Android Wear

Accuweather Android Wear

Sometimes Google’s stock weather cards just don’t give out enough weather information. If you’re an Android Wear user and would like to get a bit more detailed weather information on your wrist, you may be in luck. AccuWeather, one of the best weather apps for Android, is getting an update that brings Android Wear support. This isn’t just an update that sends AccuWeather cards to your watch, though. This is full Android Wear support, meaning you can open the app on your watch and check out current conditions, your daily forecast, precipitation and even weather alerts. To launch the app, either navigate to it by touch, or use a voice command to open it.

Support for Android Wear is certainly nice to see on a popular app like this, especially because it does more than feed you simple weather cards like many other apps out there. Whether or not you have the free or premium version shouldn’t make a difference in Wear support, so everyone can take advantage of this update. The newest version should be rolling out now, so head to the Play Store link below to update!

Here’s another look at the Spartan browser for Windows 10

Some decidedly more crisp images of the rumored successor to Internet Explorer have surfaced, showcasing a dark theme and a glimpse at the Windows 10 interface. Spartan’s layout lines up with what we’ve seen before: bare-bones, with easy access to share and reading mode buttons to the right of the address bar, and Cortana integration.

App Store Prices Increase in Europe and Canada Amidst Product Price Hikes in Brazil

After sending out an email to developers earlier in the week detailing App Store price changes coming to a few territories, Apple has today raised the price of apps in all countries within the European Union, Norway, Russia, and Canada. The price increases are due to shifting currency exchange rates and tax increases in some countries.

The price of the least expensive paid apps in the App Store, which are priced at $0.99 in the United States, moved from £0.69 to £0.79 in the UK, €0.89 to €0.99 in EU countries, and $0.99 to $1.19 in Canada, with similar price increases hitting the likes of Norway and Russia. On the other hand, app prices in Iceland are seeing a cut from where they were earlier in the week.

app store
Simultaneously, the company has raised the prices of its products in Brazil by an average of 10 percent, where they’re already the highest priced in the world. As reported by ZDNet, the 16 GB iPhone 5s jumped to R$ 2,500 ($938), a 13.6 percent increase from R$ 2,200 ($825). The iPhone 6 Plus saw a smaller 6.81 percent hike to R$ 4,700 ($1,763) from an original R$ 4,400 ($1,651).

Just last week Apple raised developer program prices in a number of countries, most notably Germany and the UK, so today’s app price hikes in these territories no doubt fall in line with the company keeping up with fluctuating currency values and foreign exchange rates.

Both changes come on the heels of Apple celebrating the App Store’s biggest sales day in history on New Year’s Day, along with a prosperous 2014 that saw total developer earnings hit $25 billion since the store’s opening.

Polaroid L Series tablets announced at CES 2015

polaroid_l10_tablet

Polaroid’s new Socialmatic Camera was not the only device the company announced at CES 2015. Polaroid also announced the availability of a new L Series line of tablet devices. The L Series consists of two tablets, the L7 which is a 7-inch tablet and the L10, a 10.1-inch tablet, both of which will come with Android Lollipop. Polaroid is clearly going after entertainment consumers with the tablet line as indicated by CEO Scott Hardy’s statement, “Our L Series provides consumers with super-fast quad core processing speeds allowing for faster performance and less wait times when watching movies, playing games or surfing the web.  In addition the L Series’ sleek design and affordable price point make it a great choice.”

The Polaroid L Series tablets will come equipped with quad-core processors, support for Bluetooth and WiFi, an “extended battery life” and front-mounted speakers. Polaroid says the tablets will have suggested retail prices between $99 and $149, so they are targeting budget buyers as well. Detailed specs were not provided by Polaroid, but at that price point they should probably be minimal. The new L Series tablets are scheduled to be available in the U.S. market sometime during the Spring of 2015.

Verizon finally gets the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge – available now

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

Being an AT&T customer usually means I will have access to all of the latest and greatest phones, like the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge which I reviewed last month.  Verizon customers can now order their own curved display phone today at http://www.verizonwireless.com.  Pricing is similar to other carriers; pricing will start at $399.99 on a new 2-year contract, $799.00 full unlocked price, or $33.33 per month(24 months) for the most intriguing and innovative phone of 2014.

As a refresher, the Note Edge has all of the same features as the Note 4, but has a curved screen on the right side of the phone.
