NBC’s iOS app can now send shows to your TV, sort of

NBC app for iOS

The big US broadcasters like to tout the strength of their mobile TV apps, but actually viewing the apps’ content on a TV has frequently proven elusive. That’s a rather glaring omission, don’t you think? Some credit is due to NBC, then, as it recently updated its iOS app with AirPlay support. Unfortunately, it’s pretty basic at this stage. All you can do is turn on AirPlay mirroring and beam whatever is on your mobile device’s screen — you’re out of luck if you’d like to see optimized videos, let alone do something else on your iOS gear while you watch. Still, it’s good to see NBC catch up on features that services like Hulu have had for quite a while.

“Oh, it’s on!”: Samsung sends John Legere a gold Samsung Galaxy S5 of its Own

gold Samsung Galaxy S5Shots have now been fired. Earlier today, we reported that HTC America had sent T-Mobile CEO, John Legere, a HTC One M8 with a 24 carat gold finish as a gift, a photo of which he happily posted on his Twitter account. Not content to be beaten out by HTC, Samsung Mobile US has gifted to Legere a gold Samsung Galaxy S5 of their own, hand delivered by Samsung executive, Travis Warren. You can see it in the picture above, which is a selfie that could possibly have been taken with the gold HTC One M8. Ironic, no?

In the tweet with the gold Samsung Galaxy S5, Legere doesn’t mention that the device has a 24 carat gold finish as he did with the One M8, so it’s entirely likely that this is just a publicity stunt by Samsung to make sure it doesn’t look like HTC beat them at something. That said, it does look very gold, and who wouldn’t want to be choosing between two of the newest and best Android smartphones on the market which also happen to be gold. Man, do I want to be John Legere…

What do you think about Samsung’s response to HTC’s gold HTC One M8? Let us know what your opinion is in the comments.

Perks of being John Legere: T-Mobile CEO gets a HTC One M8 with 24 carat gold Finish

HTC One M8 with 24 carat goldI’m sure most people envy John Legere; the CEO of T-Mobile is basically the coolest company figurehead you could ever ask for, and to top it off, T-Mobile continues to do some amazing things with their offered services which are making the other American networks feel a bit nervous. We’ve seen Legere repeatedly wear attire with Batman logos which most executives wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole while in public, but exactly how cool is Mr. Legere? Well, HTC America thinks he’s cool enough to be gifted their new flagship smartphone, the HTC One M8. But not just any ordinary, silver One M8 either; specifically a HTC One M8 with 24 carat gold finish, as pictured above.

I assume some of us will now want to re-evaluate our lives and plan the best way to become John Legere. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a gold HTC One M8 however; at the start of April, we got word that HTC would be bringing a gold-plated version of the One M8 to the Middle East. Suffice to say, the phone gifted to Legere is likely one of those gold plated devices, though the retail prices of these devices hasn’t actually been made known yet. Doesn’t stop me being jealous though…

Would you want a gold HTC One M8? Let us know what you think about the phone’s appearance in the comments.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game ‘First Look Trailer’ looks like a swinging good time, out April 17th

the amazing spider-man 2 gameThe Amazing Spider-Man 2 movie is due for release next week, and what superhero movie would be complete without a video game tie-in; The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game has been teased by Gameloft today in a “First Look Trailer” which shows you just under a minute of gameplay and cutscenes from the game that is going to be released on April 17th. Check out the trailer below:

Gameloft looks like they’ve improved a lot from the last game, not least of all the graphics which look pretty darn good for a mobile game. It also looks like there are alternate costumes to collect and equip which will keep collectors and long time comic book fans happy. In the description of the video, Gameloft also mentions that the game will be released “as a premium game”; seeing as last year’s game costs $6.99 USD, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game will likely follow a similar trend and cost about the same. This might seem like a lot of money, but it’s probably better than Gameloft’s other freemium titles which try and make you part with your hard-earned cash.

Are you looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game? Or are you just looking forward to the movie? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Watch NASA simulate a Mars landing on Earth to test supersonic parachutes

To make sure the (very expensive) equipment we’re sending to Mars don’t crash into the ground, NASA’s putting its huge supersonic parachutes through a grueling test. Wait, what do parachutes have to do with Mars missions anyway? Well, if you read up on the Curiosity rover’s risky landing in 2012, you’ll see that NASA used a parachute to slow down its descent. That parachute won’t work for the bigger things we’re bound to send to the red planet in the future, though, so NASA designed a larger one called low-density supersonic decelerator or LDSD. The problem is, it’s too big for most of the agency’s wind tunnels and locations for testing, prompting NASA to create a special outdoor rig that simulates Martian landing.

NASA’s contraption is a complex set-up that includes a large number of elements, including a Night Hawk helicopter, hundreds of pounds of weight, a winch, a sled, rockets and a lot of rope. It’s like a Rube Goldberg machine, especially since the process needs to go down in sequence, but the end task is nowhere near simple. A huge chunk of the parachute got ripped out in the test video below, but since this test was designed to discover flaws, we’d say it was a huge success.

Samsung Galaxy S5 review: a solid improvement, but don’t rush to upgrade

Samsung’s latest handset, the Galaxy S5, has a slightly larger screen and squared edges, but nontheless recognizable as part of the Galaxy family. Packing a heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and extensively revamped TouchWiz UI, it’s a solid upgrade from the GS4. But is it worth an early upgrade?

Blizzard’s Warcraft card game is getting an undead single-player expansion

Were you hoping for a single-player campaign in Blizzard’s Warcraftthemed card game, Hearthstone? Well, you’re getting one. The outfit’s announced Curse of Naxxramas at PAX East, and, in addition to fresh challenges and more than an entire deck’s worth of shiny cards, there’s a new Adventure mode en route for solo players. As Joystiq has noticed, Naxxramas also features a new game-board based on Warcraft‘s floating necropolis of the same name. The first area, subtly named Arachnid Quarter (gee, wonder what’s lurking in there?), is free for everyone and will roll out simultaneously across iPad, Mac and PC sometime later this year. If you want to complete the expansion’s other successive areas as they release, you’ll have to buy-in either with in-game gold or your hard-earned meat-space ducats. Still not sure what the hype is about? Well, the game doesn’t cost a thing, so there really isn’t much risk in giving it a shot for yourself. It’d probably be a good idea to start practicing ahead of Naxxramas’ ambiguous release date, anyhow.
