video_web-mainMany employee training and professional development initiatives can be improved with the use of online video.  Video content has a few basic attributes that can make the content easier to understand and retain in a number of different educational scenarios.  A few reported benefits of video eLearning are as follows:

  • eLearning is preferred by employees.  More than half of employees report that they would prefer to learn new material on a platform that utilizes online video compared to in-house trainings with human resources representatives.
  • eLearning is repeatable.  It is important to ensure that all employees within a department are up to speed on the same basic competencies.  A repeatable training method is a quality way to measure necessary base knowledge and subsequent growth.
  • eLearning is cost-effective.  Employees can complete video modules during routine downtime instead of attending a conference for an entire week.  In addition, employees can work at their own paces and take extra time to master certain concepts.

Video has a higher level of engagement than standalone written materials.  In addition, video training is easy for employees to reference at a later date.  Instead of trying to explain complex, technical concepts, indexed video can allow employees to quickly and easily reference a live demonstration.

Video and Repetition can Improve Material Retention Rates

Learning new material almost always requires a degree of repetition that is unique to different individuals with different cognitive strengths.  KZO Innovations online video platform allows employees to target specific areas that require more repetition for adequate learning.  Similarly, employees can use some sections of video as review for concepts that they are already highly familiar with. Repetition can be refined in the context of professional development and training in the workplace.  Focus on providing the right repetition in specific targeted areas for each individual employee.

Work with Different Learning Styles Simultaneously and Build Reference Archives

Memory is not as straightforward as many people assume it is.  Video can be customized to cater to different learning styles simultaneously while furthering repetition.  A prime example of a video that caters to different learning styles would be a video demonstration that includes a transcript at the bottom or corresponding PowerPoint slides.  This video will address the following ways of learning:

  • Learners that prefer to read text.
  • Learners that prefer to see a task completed.
  • Learners that prefer to hear how to complete a task in spoken word.

Archives of training materials such as video and PowerPoint can help employees focus on training presentations rather than trying to focus on the presentation while taking notes.  In addition, video can be paused or repeated.  Employees are less likely to be distracted by hunger or lengthy amounts of time spent sitting in an uncomfortable position.

Improve Adult Learning with Video

Video gives adults the ability to repeat necessary information and focus on the training presentation with fewer distractions.  In addition, the right eLearning platform can address different learning styles simultaneously.  Furthermore, the majority of workers report that they prefer video conferencing and training.  Improve overall business practice by investing in ongoing eLearning initiatives and reference video archives for employees.  In addition, an upfront investment in quality video education materials is much more cost-effective than traditional in-house training sessions.  It’s a win-win.

Chromecast AppsNow that Google has opened up the Cast SDK for developers to start incorporating Chromecast support with their apps we should start to see more apps adding the functionality. Luckily, we are. A number of apps have recently been updated and include, or soon will include Chromecast support.

Not yet, but it is coming

  • Mono – Now with Chromecast support (for beta testers only – request via email.
  • Absolute TWiTFeatures held back from this release: * Chromecast when available in the UK
  • Telecast+ Online TV – Chromast support for this app is not yet available and will be coming soon
  • tinyCam Monitor PRO for IP cam – Features in development: Chromecast support
  • vGet (Stream, Download, DLNA) – Support for Chromecast will be added soon

There is also talks of Spotify and Rdio support on the way. Not sure when that is supposed to happen, but we will keep our eyes peeled.

We know that AllCast picked up support just hours after the SDK was released and has since received multiple updates fixing various little issues and tweaking.

What other apps have you seen that already, or are planning, Chromecast support? Let’s get a running list together.

New Leaked Images of the HTC M8 Surface Showing its Face

htc-m8-images

Last night, we got our first look at the HTC M8 from behind showing a second camera sensor. Turns out that image has been debunked as Photoshop creation. Followed by the news of the debunking, we get two new images showing an apparent HTC M8 showing us its pretty face.

htc-m8-images-2

Certainly fits the description of a the similar look of the HTC One, but I am loving the black color. These images come from Russia, which they added specs that we kind of already knew about. Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2 gb of RAM, and a dual-sensor 5 MP camera. It apparently will rock Android 4.4.2 right out of the box, so you be the judge on if these are real or not. The HTC M8 is rumored to be launched at the end of March in MYC, so we must be patient.

How to Become Better at LinkBuilding

Link-Building1Link building is an important part of running a successful website. During the early days of the web, search engines relied on links as a way to gauge the popularity and importance of websites. Today, the major search engines have more sophisticated, and accurate, ways to decide which websites should appear at the top of the search results, but that doesn’t mean link building is not important. Many of your visitors will find your website through links, and being associated with other high quality websites is valuable for brand building and SEO. These tips will help you to learn link building techniques that work.

Build Links for The Right Reasons

Before you solicit a link from any website, think about why you want it. If the only reason you’re looking for a link is because you want to increase the number of incoming links you have, don’t waste your time. The only links you should be chasing are ones from websites that belong in your niche. A good link adds value to your site, and to the site that is linking to you. Do you really think that the other webmaster’s visitors will be interested in your content?

Give Webmasters a Reason to Link to You

Bloggers that run high quality websites get a huge number of link requests every day. If you want them to take the time to answer your questions then you need to make your request stand out. An email that simply says “please link to me” is likely to get deleted without a second thought. Before you send out a link request, think about whether you would respond to a similar request. If you wouldn’t, don’t send that email. Try to come up with a compelling reason to link to your site. Offer something of value (a discount, ebook, or infographic), because you’re getting something of value in return (a link).

Ditch Those Metrics

Traditional link building wisdom says that you shouldn’t waste your time with sites that have a poor Alexa rank, low Page Rank or low Domain Authority. In this case, traditional wisdom is wrong. Metrics are easy to manipulate, and many low quality sites have good looking metrics. In contrast, many high quality sites have poor metrics because the webmasters that run them don’t care about getting a number on a tool bar to move in the right direction. Use your own mind to judge whether you want to work with a particular website.

Be Consistent

Don’t make the mistake of going on a link building spree once every few months and building a huge number of links in a short space of time. Google may erroneously (or correctly!) identify those links as spam. Instead, try to spend a few minutes each week on link building. A steady trickle of high quality links is better for your brand and for SEO.

Treat Link Building Like Networking

Remember that there are real people behind those websites that you’re working with. Treat those people with respect. Thank them for their time if they answer your emails, even if they say no to linking to you at the moment. Become a part of the community in your niche, and you’ll find link building efforts get easier and easier.

Olympic Athletes Requested to Cover Apple Logos During Opening Ceremony Because of Samsung Sponsorship

NewImageOlympic athletes are being asked by Samsung to cover any Apple logos on their devices during the Parade of Nations at the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony because Samsung is a lead worldwide sponsor of the Games.

The report, from a Swiss site (via Slashgear) [Translate], does not go into much detail on the request, but reports it as a condition of Samsung’s sponsorship. From Slashgear:

Olympics sponsor Samsung is reportedly dropping Galaxy Note 3 smartphones in athletes’ goodie-bags, though the gift comes with a catch: a supposed ban on any other device branding, iPhone or otherwise, during the opening ceremony.

Olympic athletes are controversially banned from mentioning any non-sponsor products during their time at the Olympics, including on social media and clothing.

All accredited competitors, coaches, trainers and officials are required to abide by Rule 40 of the Olympic Charter, preventing athletes from mentioning any non-Olympic sponsor companies. Athletes breaking Rule 40 can be punished with “removal of accreditation and financial penalties” or even total disqualification. The IOC has said on numerous occasions that protecting sponsors is of paramount importance because, without them, there could be no Games.

It’s not entirely clear if this “Rule 40″ was used as the reason for the ban on competitor logos. MacRumors has reached out to the United States Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Committee, and Samsung for comment but has yet to receive any response.

Long-time Google employee Susan Wojcicki is the new head of YouTube

TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013 - Day 2

Introducing the new head of YouTube: Susan Wojcicki, former SVP of ads and commerce at Google, who boasts some serious connections in the tech sphere. Mountain View has confirmed the news, and the outgoing YouTube head Salar Kamangar will reportedly work on other projects within the company.

Truly, few Google employees can claim roots as legendary as Wojcicki’s; she was hire number 16, who famously rented her garage in Menlo Park to founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. Oh, and it just so happens that her sister, 23andme founder Anne Wojcicki, was married to Brin until late last year. Sound like a soap opera story line? Maybe so, but Susan’s new role at YouTube could help strengthen the video service’s ad revenue strategy. In an email statement shared with Re/code, Google CEO Larry Page said:

Salar and the whole YouTube team have built something amazing. YouTube is a billion person global community curating videos for every possibility. Anyone uploading their creative content can reach the whole world and even make money. Like Salar, Susan has a healthy disregard for the impossible and is excited about improving YouTube in ways that people will love.

“Improving YouTube” will likely entail new ad formats — possibly some that move away from the TrueView in-stream commercials you’re used to skipping after five seconds. With the TrueView model, advertisers only pay when their spots are viewed. YouTube reportedly brought in $5.6 billion in ad revenue last year, and Wojcicki will no doubt be focused on pushing up those numbers.
