This awkward wearable might be Huawei’s upcoming smartwatch

Look, the truth is most smartwatches just aren’t that stylish. Take for example the clunky wearable in this pic, which might actually be one of Huawei’s upcoming devices. A Huawei exec has posted this image and the one after the break on Weibo (a Chinese social network) with a caption that says: “My new toy. Do you like this color?” Since the company’s expected to launch a smartwatch at Mobile World Congress, it’s easy to assume that this is the device in question, but we’ll know for sure in a few days.

By the way, these images were taken using a mysterious Glory X1 device, which could be the MediaPad X1 7.0, the watch itself or something entirely new. Despite these pictures, it might still be worth checking back for Huawei’s smartwatch next week. After all, this baby blue bracelet could just be an early prototype… or a high-tech toy from a cereal box.

LG’s curvy G Flex smartphone is coming to Canada through Rogers

LG G Flex

Canadians have been left out of the curved smartphone frenzy so far, but they’ll soon learn what all the fuss is about: LG has announced that the G Flex is coming to Canada as a Rogers exclusive this spring. While the local edition won’t include any radical changes, it should have very fast data with dual-band, 150Mbps LTE support. Pricing isn’t available yet. However, the American launches suggest that Rogers’ model won’t be cheap. You’d better really, really like that banana-shaped display.

YouTube makes finding and following others’ playlists easier, debuts new card design for the web

We figured changes would be afoot after Susan Wojcicki (former chief ad guru at Google) became the head of YouTube, and it turns out, the first ones made since she got the job are all about playlists. Henceforth (or at least until the next round of UI tweaks arrive), the left rail on Youtube.com will have a dedicated “Playlists” pane that shows your personal playlists along with those from other channels that you’ve liked. Additionally, users will find a new “Playlists” tab on channel landing pages and get a new dedicated playlist editing page. The new features are rolling out worldwide over the next few days, and with them comes a new responsive, card-style design that fits “neatly on any screen size,” per the company, and should feel familiar to folks who use YouTube’s mobile apps. One YouTube for all, yo.

US military tries using small electric jolts to keep soldiers awake

Ren wears Stimpy's happy helmet

Soldiers don’t have many options for overcoming sleep deprivation outside of a good cup of coffee. If the Air Force Research Laboratory’s experiments prove successful, though, troops may rely on tiny jolts of electricity to stay alert. By using a mild current to stimulate key parts of the brain, the military’s scientists can keep people awake and focused for long periods — up to 30 hours in recent trials. The existing technique produces modest side effects like skin irritation and short headaches, and it’s unlikely to reach civilians any time soon. However, a refined version could eventually prove crucial to drone pilots and other warriors who can’t afford to take naps during crucial missions.

Steve Jobs to be Honored With Commemorative Postage Stamp in 2015

jobsstampThe United States Postal Service today approved a commemorative Steve Jobs stamp that will be printed as part of a collectible series next year, according to The Washington Post (via Engadget).

The former Apple CEO’s stamp is still in the design stages and will be released at some point in 2015.

Jobs, who passed away in 2011 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, has also been posthumously honored for his visionary achievements with a special Grammy Merit Award and a Disney Legends Award. He was also inducted into the Bay Area Business Hall of Fame, has had a building at Pixar named after him, and was featured in an exhibit at the U.S. Patent Office Museum.

The Washington Post has also revealed several other future postage-stamp subjects approved for coming years, including Johnny Carson, John Lennon, and Michael Jackson.

Steve Jobs will go postal with commemorative stamp in 2015

Soon you’ll be able to celebrate the life of tech icon Steve Jobs in a new analog way: by sending snail mail. The U.S. Postal Service has approved a commemorative stamp honoring the Apple co-founder to be printed as part of a collectible series next year. Stamp subjects are traditionally kept a secret until just before printing to raise public demand, however, The Washington Post outed a list of upcoming mailbox-honorees Thursday. Other influencers set to be commemorated on your utility bills include Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, “Favorite Desserts,” and Barrack Obama (potentially part of an artistic misspelled presidents series?). If you can’t handle waiting to see what will show up in your mailbox, hit the source link for three years of salacious details.

Volvo tests grocery delivery to connected cars instead of your home

We’ve seen connected cars do a lot of things, and now they could save those precious minutes you spend at a drive-thru pickup or the hassle of missing a FedEx stop. At Mobile World Congress, Volvo is set to demo it’s “ground-breaking” Roam Delivery service concept (developed with help from Ericsson) that brings your purchases to your vehicle wherever it happens to be parked. Why, you ask? Well, the company cites the headaches that surround missing the UPS driver and having to coordinate a second attempt. Once an order is placed online and your vehicle of choice is selected as the drop-off, a courier is given GPS coordinates to that location and a one-time use digital key. After accepting the delivery via smartphone or tablet, the digital key is activated, allowing access to the trunk and disappears once the goods have been placed inside and your car is locked. Although no retail partners have been announced just yet, Volvo has been running a pilot program and found 92% of the participants preferred the convenience of a mobile delivery over the necessity of being at home. As far as we’re concerned, the fewer packages left out on the stoop, the better.

Samsung Galaxy S5 release date leaked

While Samsung is usually pretty good with keeping their upcoming devices under wraps, an executive has let slip that Galaxy S5 will be released on March 13th.

Samsung is set to announce their next generation Galaxy device at Mobile World Congress next week, but details of when the Galaxy S5 would actually be available where rather scarce. Since the Galaxy S4 previously launched two weeks after last years MWC, the March 13th timeframe makes sense.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is likely to feature a 5.2-inch 2K display, an 8-core Exynos processor, 3GB of RAM, a 3,000mAh battery, and a 16-Megapixel camera, all powering Android 4.4 KitKat.

We won’t have long to wait to see what Samsung has in store for the Galaxy S5, and if the leak is anything to go by then it won’t be long before we’ll see it shipping either.

T-Mobile debuts new international calling options

T-Mobile is a major carrier with always a different kind of approach, for example a service they offered recently known as Jump, and such unique style led T-Mo to have the best quarter in nearly a decade. Now, the major network is back again with yet another great international service, the Stateside International Talk & Text offer. People don’t call their overseas friends or family often due to the expensive rates, but T-Mobile wants you to feel the freedom.

For just $15 a month, you get the perks of the first international offer as well, and also unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling from the U.S. to more than 30 countries and up to 1,000 mobile-to-mobile minutes to Mexico. “In a world where the number of people using mobile phones is growing by leaps and bounds, and fewer and fewer people are using landlines, it just makes sense to do it this way”, said CMO of T-Mobile Mike Sievert.

Are you happy with the new offer? Let us know in the comment box below.
