What we expect: HTC ‘M8′ One+

As one of the most rumored and anticipated devices of the year, the successor to the HTC One is expected to show up at some time in the next few months.  That is, an announcement is at least rumored for late February or March.

HTC, for its part, has done a decent job of keeping things under wraps for the so-called “HTC One 2″ but flagship models often feature their share of leaks. Rumors have been circulating for more than a few months as to what we might expect for the company’s 2014 premier model and are likely to continue up to the very moment of announcement.

We’ve taken this opportunity to gather up some of the juiciest and most likely rumors and put them in one place.  What you’ll find below is a growing list of things we expect or feel strongly about as it pertains to the HTC One 2.

If you see something that doesn’t look right or something we may have missed, let us know! We will update this post as we learn more about the HTC smartphone.

The Name

As to be expected when you deal with a smartphone called the “HTC One” thus far it’s been quite difficult to pin down the successor’s name. With that said, some that have been tossed about the rumor mill include HTC One 2, HTC One+, and HTC One (2014 Edition).

Specifications

Chatter suggests that the smartphone will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and feature 2GB RAM, an dual-sensor UltraPixel camera, and 2,900mAh battery. Like the HTC One Max, this one has been leaked as having a fingerprint scanner.

HTC-M8-rear-leaked

In terms of the display, we’ve been hearing something in the ballpark of 5-inches to 5.2-inches. While some companies are pushing into the 2K (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution, this one will likely have the more popular 1920 x 1080 pixel display. Reports indicate that HTC has been able to slim the bezel down and increase the screen size without making for a larger overall form factor.

Android and UI

We should expect Android 4.4 KitKat at the minimum, perhaps something as new as the 4.4.2 version. In terms of HTC’s custom Sense UI, we are told to look for a 6.0 release for the handset.

Launch

Different launch dates have been tossed around with most centering around Mobile World Congress. Most recently, however, details surfaced which suggest the HTC flagship could debut at a standalone event in late March. If correct, we could see the device unveiled at New York press conference. The predecessor was introduced at a February event which took place in New York and London; retail arrival, however, was another month away.

Carrier support

We fully expect to see HTC release the smartphone across all major carriers around the world. As for the United States, we anticipate the big providers getting their respective models at or around the same time.

Anything else?

The HTC handset may debut with up to four color options however some may be carrier or regional exclusives. What’s more, we could ultimately see some new colors rolled out over time, perhaps with retailers like Best Buy.

Differing from HTC devices of the past, navigation will likely come in the form of on-screen buttons.

Apple Releases New Behind-the-Scenes Video for ‘1.24.14’ Mac 30th Anniversary Ad

Following this morning’s debut of the “1.24.14″ Mac 30th anniversary video filmed exclusively on iPhones and edited on Macs, Apple has also released a new behind-the-scenes video that details how the original ad was made.

“Capturing the essence of the moment and it being truthful as seen through the prism of this device is really rather lovely.”

The video depicts the camera equipment used to film the ad, which included several different iPhones attached to special mounts able to rotate in any direction. A narrator explains that individual filming crews were sent to locations around the world to obtain simultaneous footage, with each crew using an iPhone to capture video that was then sent to a receiver in a backpack.

Receivers used by the crew members allowed footage to be sent instantly back to director Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott, in the U.S., and FaceTime on iPads allowed for seamless communication while filming.

Apple’s 1.24.14 video was filmed for the 30th anniversary of the Mac. It was distilled from more than 70 hours of footage captured by camera crews on five continents in 15 different locations, including Seattle, Aspen, Maryland, Brookhaven, Puerto Rico, Botswana, London, Lyon, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Pompeii, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Melbourne.

Along with the original video and the behind-the-scenes look at how it was filmed, Apple has also posted a detailed web page that gives an even more in-depth look at the work that went into the spot.

Google’s so-called mystery barge must relocate in light of permit blunder

Google's so-called mystery barge must relocate in light of permit blunder

Sure, Google’s so-called mystery barge is a little less, well, mysterious now that we know it’s meant to be “an interactive space where people can learn about new technology,” but the tale of its creation continues the theme of intrigue. After receiving complaints about the craft’s construction, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission looked into Mountain View’s project and discovered that the proper paperwork wasn’t in order. As it turns out, the city of San Francisco nor the Treasure Island Development Authority, which gave Google the green light to set up shop in the bay, had applied for the permits necessary to let work begin at the raft’s current location. According to Larry Goldzband, the commission’s executive director, Page and Co. must move the vessel, and sending it to a permitted construction spot in the bay would do just fine. The future might not be as rosy for the Treasure Island Development Authority, however, as Goldzband says they could face fines and enforcement proceedings for stepping out of line.

This isn’t the first time Google’s float has had a run in with government officials either. Last fall, the US Coast Guard inspected the watercraft and seems to have suggested some design changes. The paperwork blunder likely won’t mean much for the barge in the long term, but we’ve reached out to Google for word on how they’ll adjust to the troubles.

Samsung’s ‘Unpacked 5’ event promises a new flagship device

Samsung Unpacked 5 invitation

Samsung sure knows how to whet the appetite of its fans. The Korean tech giant has announced that it’s holding an “Unpacked 5″ event at Mobile World Congress on February 24th — a potentially not-so-subtle reference to the upcoming Galaxy S 5. There’s no guarantees that the new high-end smartphone will appear in Barcelona, especially when Samsung has only unveiled one Galaxy S device (the Galaxy S II) at the trade gathering. However, our invitation mentions a “flagship product,” and it comes nearly a year after the company invited us to get “ready 4 the show” — we all know what that digit was referencing. Whether or not the fifth-generation flagship makes an appearance at the event, you can be sure that we’ll be there.

Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 1 scheduled for 24th Feburary, Galaxy S5 sure to make an Appearance

samsung unpacked 2014 episode 1For some time now (some would say from the time its predecessor was launched), we’ve been wondering for some time now when the Samsung Galaxy S5 was going to be announced. Well, Samsung has settled that matter once and for all after sending out invites today to the Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 1 event.

Scheduled for February 24th in Barcelona, this announcement will be made in the midst of the MWC 2014 frenzy. Further indication that the event will unveil the Galaxy S5 is the fact that the invite has the words “UNPACKED 5″ prominently stamped across it. Samsung also makes reference to its YouTube channel suggesting that it will be live-streaming the unveiling, which we’ll be covering a bit closer to the date.

As long as they don’t get Michael Bay to announce their flagship device, I’m sure it will be a Samsung event to remember. Are you excited about the release of the Galaxy S5? Will you be getting one? Let us know in the comments below if you are.

Tim Cook to Meet With Turkish President Ahead of Istanbul Apple Store Opening [Mac Blog]

Apple CEO Tim Cook will meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gül tomorrow at the Çankaya Presidential Compound in Ankara, according to the President’s official calendar.

The visit comes as Apple is planning to open its first retail store in the heart of Istanbul’s new multi-use Zorlu Center sometime in 2014. Apple is also heavily involved in the bidding for Turkey’s $4.5 billion tablet initiative that will see as many as 15 million tablets given to the country’s schoolchildren, and Apple executives have met with the president about the project before.

Thanks Mert!

NudeAudio’s Studio 5 wants to change how you think about Bluetooth speakers

For many, the humble Bluetooth speaker has been marred by a preconception about poor audio quality (one that was often deserved until technologies like aptX gained traction). A problem usually compounded by generic, masculine design. NudeAudio wants to change that. Currently, the company has a family of portable speakers that aim to marry contemporary design with affordable prices. It’s latest product — the Studio 5 above — tries to bring these same core ideas to a product designed for the home. Feature-wise, there’s support for aptX and AAC, plus an option for dual-pairing Bluetooth devices. This means you won’t need to keep re-connecting different music sources, and there’s a lightning connection for iPhone/iPad too. The 2.1 setup also has a 3.5mm aux-in connection to round out the input options, while physical controls on top, and around the back mean you won’t have to reach for your phone should you need to crank-up that killer tune. Priced at $179/£149, the Studio 5 will be taking on some well-established competition, but one thing’s for sure, this one shouldn’t cause you any financial headaches.

After the Super Bowl, we will have to fill the hours with non-football things (until the NFL Combine, at least) and right on time we have the return of AMC’s The Walking Dead this weekend. If you prefer the rush of sports action (and the thrill of high speed crashes in various downhill events) however, the 2014 Winter Olympic Games from Sochi also begin, with the first competition set for 3AM ET Saturday. In the US NBC is broadcasting hours of coverage across its channels (check out the schedule here), and streaming every event live online (if you have a cable TV subscription). Football fans can get their last taste of the game with the season finales of Inside the NFL and NFL Turning Point, while gamers can check out the Fable Anniversary collection. Check after the break for trailers plus our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and gaming.

Unknown Sony Xperia Phone Pictured by Blurrycam with Incredibly Thin Bezels

sony-xperia-thin-bezel

Mr. Blurrycam strikes again, this time showing us an unknown Sony Xperia device with some barely there bezels. Now this hasn’t always been the case with Sony devices. Sony hasn’t strived in the bezel thinning out department, but they have directed their efforts more to the durability of the devices. They might be changing things up, so squint your eyes and take a look at these blurry, yet almost bezel-less pictures.

sony-xperia-thin-bezel

These images came off of a Chinese forum called Digi-wo , and there really isn’t much more we can tell you about this mystery device. Some may assume this is Sony’s new Xperia flagship, Sirius (or Z2), but most likely not. If we we find out anything more about this mystery, g-string bezel device, we will let you know.

White House will host its first Maker Faire later this year

Joey Hudy and President Obama shoot a marshmallow cannon

Many will tell you that Maker Faires inspire entrepreneurs, and the White House certainly agrees — it wants to foster that inventive spirit across the US. Accordingly, it just unveiled plans to host the first-ever White House Maker Faire later in 2014. Details of the competition are coming later, but the government is already encouraging builders to share their creations through both email and Twitter. The upcoming Faire is part of a broader initiative that will encourage support for maker spaces and startups. We wouldn’t expect the event to create the next Elon Musk, but it might just give indie gadget designers the exposure (and potentially, funding) they crave.
