Red Nexus 5 officially in the Google Play Store

There have been more than enough rumors regarding the release of the Nexus 5 in bright red. Well, it’s officially official, beginning today in the Google Play Store.

There isn’t much more to say here. Just that there is a bright red color option for the Nexus 5. It’s the same price as the others, and the same storage options are available.

The only thing that gets me is that they chose a bright pink wallpaper to put on the bright red Nexus. Weird. But I guess that’s why I don’t work for Google.

Get the bright red Nexus 5 here!

Iridium’s satellite hotspot will get you online nearly anywhere on Earth

Iridium Go hotspot

Globalstar’s Sat-Fi won’t be the only game in town for satellite hotspots. Iridium has unveiled the Iridium Go, a hotspot that lets up to five WiFi-equipped devices hop on the internet, send texts and make phone calls from just about anywhere on the planet. It’s built for outdoor adventurers with both a rugged design and an SOS mode that gets in touch with emergency services. However, software may be the Go’s real ace in the hole; while it will ship with official Android and iOS apps, there’s already a developer kit that lets third-party software take advantage of the satellite link on any platform. Iridium plans to ship the hotspot in the first half of the year. The firm isn’t discussing exact pricing at this point, but it promises that Go will represent its “lowest cost” offering to date at below $800 — for some people, it will be cheap enough to come along on that big summer hiking trip.

Evernote for Mac now lets you search using everyday language

Natural language search on Evernote for Mac

Evernote syncs gobs of content these days, and that can make it tricky to find what you’re looking for without some clever search tricks. However, those data hunts just got much easier with an updated version of Evernote for Mac. The app is the company’s first to let you search using common language; you just have to include the relevant criteria, such as the location, time or any attachments. Look for “notes from phone created last month with audio,” for example, and you’ll get just those recent voice memos. There’s no mention of when other Evernote apps will get their turn at the refined search engine, but Mac users can start downloading today.

Google Wallet for iOS update adds loyalty card scans and merchant notifications

Last week, loyalty card scanning was added to the Android version of Google Wallet, but today the iOS faithful can get in on the action. An update allows you to add all of those pesky rewards cards that clutter the ol’ billfold and ditch the unsightly key ring tags. Just like the previous release, you’ll just need to scan the barcode of each card and the app will automatically populate your account info. If you’ll recall, credit card snapshots were enabled on the iPhone change purse last month for adding a full range of payment options. In addition to the new frequent buyer functionality, Wallet will also notify you when you’re strolling past a merchant that matches one of those saved memberships. You know, just in case you’re having trouble finding the nearest GameStop.

The red Nexus 5 is now on sale at Google Play

Well, that didn’t take long. We saw leaked snapshots of the Nexus 5 in red last week, and now the scarlet-hued handset has made its proper debut over at Google Play. As of right now, both the 16GB and 32GB versions are available with their usual $349 and $399 price tags. You can expect identical specs to the existing black and white models with the only difference being a new coat of Bright Red paint.

2014 Doodle 4 Google encourages kids to share ideas on how to make the world better

Google is one of a few companies that loves being involved in all kinds of different projects, one of which is Doodle 4 Google. In 2013, through the initiative, the Mountain View-based company challenged kids to shoot for the stars and describe their best day — the results, to say the least, were quite creative and heartwarming. This year’s version of Doodle 4 Google takes on a whole new theme: “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place…” On its blog, the Chrome maker says the idea is to have “young artists think and dream big,” adding that this is all about “curiosity, possibility and imagination.” Submissions are being accepted as we speak and will have to be in by March 20th; as was the cast last year, the winner will be receiving a $30,000 college scholarship and $50,000 Google for Education tech grant for the triumphant kid’s school. Even better, the chosen Doodle is set to be featured on the almighty Google.com page.

The 50 finalists, one from each US state, are going to be revealed on April 29th, after which Google will let the public decide which creation should take the highest honors and be crowned 2014 Doodle 4 Google champ. If you’re interested in getting your little ones involved, then head over to this link here — details on how to participate can be found there.

[GIVEAWAY] Jumper Card Goes Live on IndieGoGo; We Have 5 to Be Shipped Out!!

Normally we wouldn’t run two giveaways in the same week, but we just couldn’t help ourselves this week. Hopefully many of you have already gone and entered our Gaiam cork case and wood earbud giveaway that went up yesterday. If not, go do it now and then come back and enter to win the Jumper Card too.

Jumper Card Credit Card sized data sync and charging cable for Android and iOS Jumper Card Credit Card sized data sync and charging cable for Android and iOSThe Jumper Card is brand new Kickstarter that has just launched today. Usually you have to kick some cash out to back the project before you can get your hands on one. This time around we thought it would make a little more sense to help push them along by getting some out to our readers so they could show them off and share the campaign around. It certainly is a bit easier to recommend backing a project if you have one in your hands already, right? We certainly think so. We even gave you guys a little teaser image a few weeks back to see how interested you guys might be. It generated a little buzz, but we weren’t at liberty to do much else then, now we can get down to business on these little guys.

What is the Jumper Card?

There is a simple answer to this. It is another credit card sized charge and sync cable for your device. However, the Jumper Card has some distinct differences as compared to ones like the Nomad Charge Card. Rather than accommodating just one charging adaptor, the Jumper Card offers all three major plugs in one universal house shaped tip which clips into place inside the card.

Jumper Card Credit Card sized data sync and charging cable for Android and iOSNext to it is your traditional USB tip end to plug it into your PC, battery bank or what have you. Obviously the primary function of the Jumper Card is to give you a all-in-one style charge and sync cable in your pocket, it is just .25 inches thick. The JC does a little bit more than that though. On the side of the card you will notice a switch.

This switch does two things.

1.) Turns the dual LED lights on to use it as an emergency flashlight.

Jumper Card Credit Card sized data sync and charging cable for Android and iOSYes, this little pocketable Jumper Card lives up to its name and offers you some physical power on the go just in case of an emergency. It definitely won’t give you a substantial amount of charge, but it isn’t supposed too. Rather, it is there in case your phone is dying, or almost dead, and you need just a little boost and have nothing else available to charge.

Personal testing of the pre-production units was good. It didn’t kick my Xperia Z into charge mode off the built-in battery though. It kicked on the iPOD, the iFrogz, the Yoga8 tablet from Lenovo and my wife’s HTC One S. I assume this is due to the output of the battery itself. If you have a higher end device, you might not be able to use the 480mAh battery side of things. That doesn’t detract from it having a dual LED light and a dual function sync/charging cable readily at your finger tips.

It would be great if you took some time out of your busy day to share the campaign with your friends, but it isn’t a requirement to enter to win one.

To enter: Tell us, and Jumper Card, how this little accessory would have been a life saver to you in the past down in the comments. If you happen to also become a backer for the Jumper Card in some fashion during this giveaway, you will gain a second entry into the random drawing. Assuming we can cross reference your name and email on the campaign page in the comments section.

*Contest terms: Leaving a comment give us permission to contact you for shipping information to pass along to the Jumper Card team for shipping. The contest will run from Tuesday February 4th – Monday February 10th at 5 pm PST.

Toast Wood Covers Now Available for the Nexus 5

nexus-5-wood

Seems to me that the wood look on a phone has become quite the trend in the past few months. Before Motorola was surprisingly sold off to Lenovo, they launched the option to go with the wood look for the Moto X in the many choices you have in the Moto Maker. Looking at my social media feeds, I saw quite a few people posting about how they were wanting one, or had just ordered themselves one. I’ve never really been a fan, but now you can bring that wood look to the Nexus 5 with Toast.

Apple and Samsung Continue to Dominate U.S. Smartphone Usage Share

ComScore today released the results of its monthly rolling survey of U.S. mobile phone users for the October-December 2013 period, showing that Apple’s U.S. smartphone market share has increased 1.2 percentage points since September, for a total share of 41.8 percent. Though Apple’s share continues to grow, it still lags behind Android’s total share of 51.5 percent, down 0.3 percent since September.

Looking at handset manufacturers, Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the category, growing their control of the market by 1.2 percent each over the three month period. Motorola, LG and HTC round out the top five, with all of them seeing flat or negative growth.

In Apple’s earnings call last month, CEO Tim Cook warned that U.S. iPhone sales were weaker than expected because of U.S. carriers changing their upgrade policies. As a result, seeing share growth despite the headwinds is a positive sign for the company.

Smartphone OEMs

156 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones (65.2 percent mobile market penetration) during the three months ending in December, up 3.2 percent since September. Apple ranked as the top OEM with 41.8 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers (up 1.2 percentage points from September). Samsung ranked second with 26.1 percent market share (up 1.2 percentage points), followed by Motorola with 6.7 percent, LG with 6.6 percent and HTC with 5.7 percent.

Smartphone Platforms
Apple grew its smartphone market share by 0.6 percent from November, largely at the expense of Android and BlackBerry. Despite a significant marketing effort, Micrsoft’s Windows Mobile has failed to gain any traction over the past three months, dropping 0.2 percent from 3.3% to 3.1% of total platform share.

ComScore’s data tracks installed user base rather than new handset sales, which means it is more reflective of real-world usage but slower to respond to shifting market trends than some other studies.
