Xfinity’s Gigabit router will soon double as a smart home hub
Comcast’s Xfinity division has made some forays into the smart home world already — Xfinity Home started out as a home security product, but it now handles a number of common devices like locks, thermostats, light bulbs and so on. However, the millions of people who subscribe just to Xfinity Internet haven’t been able to take advantage of these features; you need to also have an Xfinity Home subscription. That’s going to change this year — Comcast just announced that millions of its internet customers will be able to use their Xfinity “gateway” routers as smarthome automation hubs, free of charge.
Specifically, Comcast says that people using its two most recent Gateways will get these features — that’s more than 15 million customers, or more than half of its 26 million internet subscribers. In comparison, Comcast says it only has about 1.3 million subscribers to its home security service, so the company is opening up these feature to a vastly larger group.
Comcast’s Dan Herscovici (senior VP of the home group) told Engadget that the notion is to expose home automation controls to people who otherwise might not have considered using them before. “At our scale and scope, you’re talking about way more than early adopters into this tech,” he said. “We wanted to find a way to unlock the opportunity of home automation to everyone, even those that might not be interested in home security.”
Part of this new addition comes from Comcast’s acquisition of Stringify in September. The company built a cloud-based smart home device platform that worked with about 500 different products, and that tech will all be integrated into Xfinity’s offering. Additionally, Comcast is also pushing its “Works with Xfinity” program to get more hardware manufacturers on board. And naturally, you’ll be able to see settings for your smart home setup on your TV, through the Xfinity Home app and give voice commands to your devices through the voice-enabled Xfinity TV remote.
But the best part about this system goes back to the free price. It’ll enable people who’ve only dabbled with smart home devices (a Nest thermostat here, a Philips Hue lightbulb there) start stringing together multiple products and build true home automation systems. That said, it’ll be a little while before this rolls out — Comcast said that the rollout would start sometime in late Spring and would take six to eight weeks to hit its whole customer base. Still, most modem / router combos that you rent from your ISP don’t offer these kinds of features — between Gigabit speeds and smart home controls, the Xfinity gateway actually might be worth the monthly fee.

My Special Aflac Duck The My Special Aflac duck is designed to support children diagnosed with cancer. It’s good for medical play, with features like a port-a-cath with an RFID chip for children to familiarize themselves with the chemotherapy process. It even preps the QuadWash dishwasher for a deep-cleaning cycle if you happen to be making something tough to clean, like lasagna. Whirlpool and Yummly Smart Kitchen Last year Whirlpool bought Yummly, a well-known online recipe source, and now we can see why. The appliance giant has partnered with the site to develop Yummly 2.0, an app that will scan what you have in your fridge and then come up with suitable recipe ideas. But that’s not all — it will even send over that recipe to your Whirlpool oven, which heats up to the appropriate temperature and walks you through step-by-step instructions. |

Byton EV Concept Byton showed off the near-production version of its electric SUV at CES. According to the company, the Concept (which will start at ¥300,000 in China, or about $45,000) is “85 percent” done and will launch in China in 2019 and the United States and Europe in 2020. |

NVIDIA Xavier The chip that will power future autonomous cars. The Xavier has more than 9 billion transistors with a custom 8-core CPU, a 512-core Volta GPU, an 8K HDR video processor, a deep-learning accelerator and new computer-vision accelerators. NVIDIA says the system-on-a-chip can perform 30 trillion operations per second using only 30 watts of power, making it 15 times more efficient than the previous architecture. |

Lenovo Miix 630 Lenovo’s new Miix 630 is among the first Windows 10 machines out there to run on one of Qualcomm’s smartphone chipsets rather than a more traditional Intel processor. While it might not be the fastest 2-in-1 out there, the benefits are undeniable: The Miix 630 wakes up almost instantly and boasts nearly 20 hours of battery (at least when you’re watching videos). And unlike other always-connected machines we’ve seen, the keyboard is a dream. |
Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra Sony’s XA2 Ultra is a big, stylish midrange device that packs a handful of features you might not expect to see in a midrange phone. Most notably, there are two front-facing cameras here: one for super-crisp 16-megapixel selfies (thanks to included optical image stabilization) and an 8-megapixel wide-angle sensor for those all-important group shots. Oh, and it’s one of the first Sony phones launching in the US with an always-on fingerprint sensor — trust us, it’s about time. |

Samsung’s ‘The Wall’ MicroLED TV Existing TV technology can only get so big — so Samsung decided to leap ahead with The Wall, a 146-inch MicroLED 4K TV. It delivers all of the benefits of OLED with none of the downsides. And because it’s made up of many different MicroLED panels, if you have issues with one, you don’t have to replace the whole TV. |
LG 2018 C-Series OLED With the addition of Google Assistant and a faster processor for better image handling, LG managed to improve on its already excellent OLED lineup. In particular, the company pointedly claims it can handle imagery even better than Sony (which, notably, also relies on its OLED panels). While it’s not a night-and-day change from before, it remains one of the best TV options this year. |

TCL 6-Series Roku TVs While other TV manufacturers lean on Google and Amazon AI, TCL is doubling down on its Roku platform. That combination produced last year’s well-regarded P-Series 4K TVs, and it looks like the same is in store for 2018. The 6-Series promises its LED backlighting and HDR capabilities will keep the picture quality up even if your TV room lets a little light in, as Roku Connect adds voice control of compatible speakers and soundbars. |
NVIDIA 65-inch ‘Big Format Gaming Displays’ with G-SYNC NVIDIA has come up with the first big-screen TVs for gamers. They have all the tech you’d expect in a premium TV, like 4K and HDR, but they also add features that would help with gameplay, like G-SYNC, low latency and a 120Hz refresh rate. |

HTC Vive Pro The HTC Vive Pro is a slight, welcome upgrade from the original Vive, but it includes some handy new features. First, the resolution is better at 2,880 x 1,600 combined and 615 pixels per inch, and it features integrated 3D audio, dual front-facing cameras and two microphones. That, friends, is thanks to the Vortx. The fan blows hot and cold air to accentuate what you’re seeing on screen. It works with regular PC games too, though obviously, it’s harder to be immersed when you can see the fan in your peripheral vision. |

My Special Aflac Duck Corporate tie-in products are usually not worth anyone’s time, but the adorable My Special Aflac Duck is pretty notable. It’s cute, cuddly and packed with sensors that allow it to interact with you — but it’s also been specifically designed to comfort kids with cancer. The duck can even react using RFID cards that have emoji on them; show it a sad face and the duck will put its head down and let out a whimper, while showing it a silly face will make it smile and dance around. It’s hard to argue with Aflac’s good intentions here. |
MyLiFi Lamp LiFi (wireless internet that travels through light bulbs) has been around for a while as a concept, but products using it are few and far between. The MyLiFi lamp hooks into a router and then beams internet whenever the light bulb is turned on. You’ll need a dongle to receive the signal, but the good news is that this technology is a lot more secure than standard WiFi. And the lamp itself doesn’t look half-bad, either. |

And now the company has started working on a way of building Internet of Things sensors that uses the same principle to avoid using batteries. Which could be revolutionary, especially because so many Internet of Things sensors only need low power to operate. Reflexion’s big-screen concussion tester is heading to schools
We met Reflexion and its Edge screen last year, and even then we were pretty taken with the idea: a Whac-A-Mole-style test for athletes that improves coordination and helps spot concussions after a big hit? It’s uniquely odd, but valuable nonetheless. This year, the team is back with an essentially final version of its 6-foot long display, and it has one crucial trick its predecessor didn’t: you can fold it up and squeeze it into a backpack, perfect for high school coaches who need to lug these things to games.
The Edge has the added benefit of being a little fun: you’re meant to stand in front of the big capacitive screen and touch lights that pop up as quickly and as accurately as possible. Writers aren’t usually known for their prowess at sports, and a quick test confirmed that I’d be a lousy football player. As it turns out, I have great peripheral vision and I’m roughly as good at hitting targets with my left hand as I am with my right. (As a life-long righty, I have no explanation for this.) Sadly, I’m total garbage when it comes to accuracy — I hit spots, sure, but not dead-center.
These factors are folded into a profile that players are meant to occasionally update with new tests. If a player takes a bad hit, team staff can have them run through the test again — if there’s a notable difference from the baseline, it’s time to get that player some real assistance.
While I’m impressed this beastly screen is finally portable, I’m a little more taken by the progress the Reflexion team has made since last year. Within a few months, it will deploy two Edge screens at schools in Pennsylvania. Moreover, the Edge is currently being tested in the second phase of a clinical trial conducted by Penn State University — we definitely look forward to the results.

A first look at Panasonic’s GH5s mirrorless camera
When Panasonic announced the GH5s earlier this week, it was clear that the company created it with one simple goal in mind: to be the best 4K prosumer video camera on the market. The GH5s is being billed as the ultimate low-light shooter and a direct competitor to the king of the category, Sony’s A7S II. One of the most notable features of the new camera is its 10.2-megapixel dual ISO, multi-aspect sensor, which is half the resolution of Panasonic’s 20.2-megapixel GH5. But while the GH5s may shoot at a lower res than its flagship sibling, Panasonic says that actually helps the chip handle low-light sensitivity much better.
The GH5s can handle up to 51,200 native ISO and 204,800 extended, though you should probably stay around the 25,600 mark if you want to get the crispiest night shots. And since this is designed to be a video camera first and foremost, there’s support for Cinema 4K (4,096 x 2,160) at up to 60fps (with a full sensor readout), 10-bit HDR and up to 240fps slow-motion capture. Most importantly, there’s no time limit as to how much 4K footage you can record at a time, so you’re only bound by the limits of your battery or SD card.
If you bought a GH5 last year, fret not, as Panasonic says the GH5s isn’t meant to replace that camera. Instead, the company wanted to expand its Micro Four Thirds ecosystem in hopes of reaching audiences like professional cinematographers — a lot of whom have made the Sony A7S II their preferred low-light shooter. We’ll have more on the GH5s before it launches in February for $2,499 (body-only). Until then, enjoy these close-ups while you think about whether or not you want to spend your money on it.

Inside Byton’s experience-driven SUV concept
It’s difficult spinning up a car company basically out of thin air. Byton is not only trying to accomplish that, but it’s going against over 100 years of automotive history by highlighting the the car’s interior over the horsepower and handling. Yes, other luxury automakers also tout the poshness of their interiors, but Byton has decided to go even further: It hopes to lure customers with an SUV it refers to as a “smart device.” You know, like your phone.
The centerpiece of this plan is the massive 49-inch Shared Experience Display (SED, for short). Nothing else the Byton Concept offers either inside or out demands your attention like that giant screen. It’s the center of the company’s entire business plan to create a “smart intuitive vehicle.” Naturally, I wanted to see if it’s worth the hype.
Initially, the demo of the car also involved actually being driven around in it. Journalists are typically not trusted behind the wheels of multi-million dollar prototype vehicles and in this case, it’s all about the passenger experience anyway, so it made sense. Then the skies opened up and dropped rain on the usually dry Las Vegas; Byton was not keen to trust their concept car on wet roads during a downpour. So with the car nestled in a tent, I sat down to get to know the car better, all while sitting still.
In real life, the screen feels larger than photos of it let on. It’s all-encompassing and difficult to ignore. Actually, you can’t ignore it. The demo of the system only involved gesture controls which worked about 70 percent of the time, which is expected with a prototype. At launch, it will also include input by touch via the steering wheel-based tablet and voice commands. In fact, those last two control interfaces are how the average person will use the system while driving.
Even though the SUV is meant for an autonomous world, at launch in China in 2019, the driver will still have to pay attention at least most of the time until 2021 when the SUV is updated to Level 4 autonomy. Plus, gesture controls are notoriously fickle. Add the bumps of a pot-holed filled road and now your hand is all over the place in the space in front of the camera.
Plus, using the system requires your eyes to leave the road for far too long while you’re driving. With your voice and the touchscreen, that’s less of an issue.

The UI itself is clearly focused on the car driving itself. Access to videos, on-screen segments that can be enlarged shrunk by the driver, and of course the health information it shares can be a huge distraction. All that is great when you’re relaxing instead of tackling traffic. Even though the car is expected to ship with Level 3 autonomy at launch, the driver will probably still be spending a lot of time driving while behind the wheel.
That creates a sort of weird growing pain for Byton when it launches its electric SUV. It wants to compete with the smartphone in the car. The infotainment system is meant to be an experience to keep you occupied while the self-driving car navigates the city for you. From my brief demo it looks like it will deliver on that goal. But at launch, the system might have to be toned down to appease regulators concerned about safety. It’ll be interesting to see how new customers will feel about that if the system is squelched when they buy their new Byton.

Looxid Labs’s brain-monitoring VR headset could be invaluable for therapy
Taking in imaginary worlds or a gripping immersive video via VR can elicit strong reactions, and a startup called Looxid Labs wants to know how your brain reacts to all of it. To that end, it built the unimaginatively-named LooxidVR system, a phone-based VR headset that packs two eye-tracking cameras and six EEG brainwave sensors.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: there’s no content out there making use of this kind of data. It’s not hard to imagine potential experiences, though, like a game that modifies its own difficulty based on your stress reactions or a VR video that with narrative paths that branch in response to your brain’s whims.
All of that is theoretically possible, but that’s not the big picture Looxid is concerned about. The team is more focused on turning LooxidVR into a research tool with powerful implications for business and health.

That latter industry is easily the most interesting, particularly since LooxidVR seems like a potentially great tool for therapy. Some research into virtual exposure therapy — which puts the user in specific states of stress to mitigate the mental trauma they induce — indicates quite a bit of promise, though it hasn’t quite reached widespread use.
The company’s CES demo was, shall we say, considerably more chill. After strapping on the headset, the team took me on a tour through a virtual museum while a imaginary display constantly showing off changes in my brain activity hovered nearby. While this might all sound a little pie-in-the sky, some big names have signaled their support — HTC, for instance, invested in the company through its Vive X accelerator.

Cruising around on the Onewheel+ XR
The Onewheel has always been an exhilarating ride. When you step onto the board and lean down on the nose, there’s a rush of adrenaline as you wait for the electric motor to kick into gear. You are, for a split-second, trusting that the board will carry you forward and build the momentum necessary to keep you upright. Just carving is joyous, too, as you lean on the heel or toe edge to guide the board left or right. As an extreme sports plaything, it’s a unique and immediately joyous experience. But as a serious mode of urban transportation? That’s a tougher sell.
Earlier this week, Future Motion announced the Onewheel+ XR. It’s a successor to the Onewheel+ (which I thoroughly enjoyed riding last year) that doubles the range to somewhere between 12 and 18 miles. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to test these claims during a test ride in the Las Vegas Convention Center car park (a rundown test would have taken a fair number of hours, not to mention a huge stretch of free tarmac). I could, however, check that the riding experience was otherwise unaltered.
Well, good news. The Onewheel+ XR is just as fast and downright strange to ride as its predecessor. Stopping is still a little tricky — you have to completely remove your foot from either the left or right-hand side of the nose. If you hesitate a little, or keep some of your foot on both halves of the kicktail (i.e. centered) the Onewheel will think you’re trying to turn instead. It’s a minor quibble though and the learning curve is part of what makes the board so appealing. There’s a real sense of progression as you learn how to fly over bumps, stop on a dime and carve in a figure of eight.

Within half an hour, though, my legs started to ache. And it made me wonder if I could ever use the Onewheel as a full-time bicycle replacement. The extra range is a huge improvement, but over long distances I suspect I would want something a little less strenuous. That, of course, is where traditional electric skateboards come in. The Onewheel+ XR is competing with well-established rideables such as the Boosted Board and Inboard M1. Those are more practical, I would argue, and safer to ride in metropolitan areas. As a commuter tool, then, the Onewheel+ XR is hard to recommend. But as an all-terrain electric skateboard, it’s still in a league of its own.

There’s a new sex robot in town: Say hello to Solana
It’s been just short of a year since I locked eyes with Harmony, RealDoll’s first sex robot, at her home in Southern California. It was an arresting experience that has remained cemented in memory. In that moment, I suddenly understood the uncanny valley, a theory posited by roboticist Masahiro Mori, nearly half a century prior. It attempts to explain the feeling of revulsion and eeriness that human onlookers experience when they encounter an artificial life-form that appears nearly, but not quite human.
Today, she’s ventured out of the dimly lit R&D room at Abyss Creations to meet me at CES. On the eve of her debut, Harmony has ventured to the hotbed of consumer electronics with a new face, an updated AI and a few new friends.
When I first met Matt McMullen, Harmony’s creator and human chaperone, he planned to launch what I’ve called the world’s first commercially viable sex robot in late 2017. Harmony’s AI would be customizable via an accompanying Android app, but with limitations. While he had plans for a male version and mused about other gender variations, Harmony would launch as an artificial female with porn star proportions.
Harmony failed to launch in 2017, but McMullen and his team have been hard at work, making improvements to Harmony’s AI and the robotic head it’s housed in. He’s now targeting the end of this month for a release date, and while he’s says he’s still refining the pricing, Realbotix modular robotic heads should cost between $8,000 and $10,000 at launch.
Just minutes after the lights went out at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Harmony lit up in a hotel just across the street. Perched on a bust that could just as easily be used to display jewelry, she made small talk and recited a few dad jokes. After a year of contemplation, I no longer felt the same uneasiness I had during our first encounter. It could be that the novelty has worn off or the fact that Harmony was basically a head on a stick. It could have been CES AI fatigue, but the existential anxiety was gone.
For the most part, Harmony is the same robot that we saw last year, but the Realbotix app, which eager robophiles can be download now, now has a remote control mode. In our first demo, Harmony ran exclusively in autonomous mode, and while McMullen says the remote control functionality may not make it into the consumer app, it would make for a sweet party trick.
I was able to control Harmony’s head movements and facial expressions and dictate what she said. I, of course, took the opportunity to have her tell me how fabulous I am and for a moment I felt like some sort of dystopian puppet master. This is the future, after all, that some of McMullen’s critics fear. In a world where robotic companions are endlessly amenable, how will we treat our fellow humans?
This, and other broad ethical concerns are currently swirling around robotics labs and in academic circles. The sex-robot debate has even made its way to CES, but McMullen remains wholly dedicated to his vision of delivering a sexualized humanoid — albeit one that could be used for non-sexual companionship.
After demoing Harmony’s admittedly corny stand-up abilities, McMullen removed her wig exposing a mess of circuits, motors and wires. He then peeled back the silicone surface of her face to reveal a foam skeleton peppered with an array of small, round magnets. Those magnets will allow users to replace damaged faces or swap them out for different visages altogether. Within moments Harmony was someone completely different. She had a brand-new mug and a different voice to match.
Just like that Harmony was Solana and that eerie feeling crept back in.
