Yahoo revives its signature San Francisco billboard
Have you missed seeing Yahoo’s distinctive billboard while driving along San Francisco’s piece of Interstate 80? So has Yahoo. After a 4-year hiatus, the internet giant is bringing back its iconic signage to “surprise and delight” (read: advertise to) commuters heading toward the Bay Bridge. Unfortunately, though, it’s not going to maintain the same 1960s motel charm that you remember. The whimsical design you see above has been replaced by the slightly lifeless billboard pictured below, at least for now. Still, this is both a good way to mark Yahoo’s 20th anniversary and remind locals that Google isn’t the only ’90s-era web pioneer in town.

Retail box for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 leaks out all nicely shrink-wrapped
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Looks like this weekend is full of Samsung leaks. After getting yet another look at Samsung’s upcoming flagship devices earlier today, we’re now getting a report out of Thailand that the retail box for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has also leaked out, giving us our first look at the finished product. Although the Note 5 and its phablet companion, the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, aren’t expected to start selling till August 21st, it’s clear that retailers are starting to receive their shipments of Samsung’s new devices. Check out the leaked images of the Note 5 box below:
Considering how similar the box looks to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge versions, we’re inclined to believe that this is the real deal. If we take a look at the back of the device, we see all the specifications we were expecting to see, including 4GB RAM, 16MP rear camera and 5MP front camera, and wireless charging – the inclusion of a charging pad is also a nice touch. All this, and more, should be unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked event scheduled for August 13th in New York – considering we’ve even seen the box now, all that’s left is to wait for the event to happen.
What do you think about the retail box for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

The VOID: a VR theme park coming to Pleasant Grove, Utah

Virtual Reality is becoming highly accessible, but you can only do so much when using your consumer-optimized VR headsets. The real dream is to have complete immersion, and for that you need a dedicated area (a large one) and more advanced systems. Call it a VR arcade, if you will.
For Pleasant Grove, Utah residents this is becoming more than a far-fetched geeky idea. The VOID will be a virtual reality theme park where attendees can play games in full immersion. People would use a Rapture HMD (head-mounted display), a Rapture Vest and Rapture Gloves. This combination of devices would provide visuals, audio, haptic feedback and hand control.

That is not where the immersion ends, though. The VOID team is going all out with this one, providing full 4D elements. There will be smells, temperature control, changes in air pressure, moisture alterations and more. They are creating a complete experience that will make you feel as if you are really in the game.
Gaming experiences will also alternate. As you can see in the video, there will be war, flight, scary and even medieval fantasy experiences. At launch, there will only be 3 experiences, but more are to come as The VOID team and other studios create content.
But what about those darn lines?! Well, The VOID team is glad to tell you there will be no such nuisance at their theme park. Users will schedule their date and time beforehand. The company relates the experience to that of an IMAX theater – it will be full of great technology, impressive experiences and a much more organized system.
You can be sure I will take that road trip to see what this is all about! Will you? Sadly, we will have to wait a bit before we get to enjoy these high-tech experiences. The VOID is set to launch in the summer of 2016.

Old Intel chips are vulnerable to a fresh security flaw
If you have an old, Intel-based computer hanging around, you might want to get rid of it post-haste. Security researcher Chris Domas has discovered a vulnerability in the x86 architecture of Intel processors made between 1997 and 2010 (pre-Sandy Bridge) that lets an attacker install software in a chip’s protected System Management Mode space, which governs firmware-level security. Yes, that’s as bad as it sounds: an intruder could not only take more control than you typically see in attacks (including wiping firmware), but infect your PC even if you wipe your hard drive and reinstall your operating system. Domas has only tested against Intel-made CPUs so far, but AMD processors could be vulnerable as well.
A would-be hacker needs low-level OS access to get in, so you at least won’t face a direct assault — you need to fall prey to another attack before this becomes an option. However, this vulnerability might be difficult or impossible to fix in a timely fashion. While it’s theoretically possible to patch a computer’s BIOS (or on relatively recent systems, UEFI) to prevent these attacks, the chances of that happening are slim. What’s the likelihood that your motherboard maker will support a product that’s at least 5 years old, or that most people are both willing and able to apply firmware upgrades? Not very high, we’d reckon. Although the inexorable march of time will eventually take care of this flaw, the only surefire solution is to upgrade your computer.

Mysterious Huawei device is leaked out prior to its September 2nd announcement
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Mr. evleaks is at it again – in the latest leak from the king of leaks, Evan Blass a.k.a. @evleaks, a mysterious Huawei device has been photographed which is said to be announced on September 2nd at IFA 2015. No doubt that this is one of the device’s Huawei is going to announce at the event, and previous leaks suggest to us that this device is either the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 Plus or the Huawei Ascend Mate 8, with the former being more probable according to the rumour. From the appearance of the device, it’s clear that it is quite large and takes a lot of design cues from last year’s Ascend Mate 7, with only the flash changing position since last year’s device.
Launching at IFA on 9/2. Features force touch. Branding currently unknown (D-series?). pic.twitter.com/5w2t7m7Nsx
— Evan Blass (@evleaks) August 8, 2015
The “force touch” mentioned in the tweet refers to a new capacative display technology that puts force sensors under the screen, allowing for more pressure-sensitive gestures. With the leak of this device comes another consideration – will the Huawei Nexus look like this? The Huawei Nexus was allegedly leaked earlier this week and it has more than a passing resemblance to the device that @evleaks posted a photo of. Food for thought.
What do you think about the mysterious Huawei device that @evleaks posted today? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Motorola is the next to patch Android’s big video security flaw
Chalk up one more big Android phone maker racing to patch its devices against that nasty Stagefright video security flaw. Motorola has explained that it will not only fix the vulnerability in phones from 2013 onward (such as the original Moto X and the Droid line), but make sure that its latest hardware is secure almost from the word go. Both the Moto X Style and Moto X Play will be secure on launch, while the recently-shipped third-generation Moto G is getting its update “soon.”
The company doesn’t say whether or not it’s hopping on the monthly security patch bandwagon. However, it does add that it’s working with Google and carriers to “simplify the process” of getting that code into your hands going forward. Between this and expected fixes for phones from Google, HTC, LG, Blackphone creator SGP and and Sony, you probably won’t have to worry if you’re carrying a recent or reasonably well-known device. The real question is whether or not other brands and older (or lower-end) hardware will get the same kind of attention — you don’t want to remain at risk simply because you bought the ‘wrong’ model.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus get leaked yet again, this time in retail setting
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Seriously, it’s like these devices have been released already. Despite the fact that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus are to be announced at a Samsung Unpacked event on August 13th, the device’s have already been leaked out in full several times. Yet another leak has been put online today, this time by Reddit user, joelrtaveras, who snapped photos of both devices at a retail establishment. With other devices on hand, we get our first look at how the devices measure up compared to a device like the iPhone 6 Plus, which has a smaller screen but is noticeably bigger in the photo. Check out the images below:
As you can see, there’s not much new in these images, although we do get to see what the S-Pen looks like in its extended form – it is said that the S-Pen is spring-loaded, meaning you will push it in while it’s holstered to get the end to pop out far enough for you to grab it. One other interesting tidbit is that joelrtaveras mentioned that while the Note 5 does have the vaunted 4GB RAM we have been expecting, during his time with the device, he noticed that only half the RAM was generally available – TouchWiz strikes again, it seems.
Are you going to get the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge Plus? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

NVIDIA Shield users can use GRID game streaming for free until September

NVIDIA’s promise to cater console-quality game streaming to the masses is enticing, but it is taking the company quite a bit of time to deliver. The NVIDIA GRID service was announced in the beginning of 2013, but has been under beta since then, only available to those who decide to buy into the platform and grabbing a Shield device.
These users have been enjoying GRID streaming a couple years for free, which is a nice treat… one that is not ending soon. While we have been expecting a release, since May and July, those months have come and gone with no good news. Now NVIDIA has updated its site to let us know Shield users can continue using the GRID streaming service free of charge until September 2015.

That is really a nicer way to say the launch has been delayed significantly (even if it may make some of you happy). When we finally see GRID officially being released, there will be a subscription-based model put into action (much like Netflix, Hulu, etc.), as well as full games you will be able to purchase individually.
Just in case you are not in the loop, we are talking about streaming high-end games with console-quality graphics here. And latency is said to be minimal, making it possible for gamers around the world to play state of the art titles without expensive hardware – they would just need a stable and fast internet connection.

Pretty awesome, right? September is only a month away, so sit tight and be patient. I mean, we have already waited over 2 years; can’t hurt to hold on for a bit more! I just hope they don’t extend the delay again.
Are any of you using GRID game streaming? How is it treating you?

The Wachowskis’ Netflix show ‘Sense8’ gets a second season
The Wachowski siblings’ trippy Netflix series Sense8 may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the show clearly has some fans: as part of a birthday celebration, Netflix has revealed that it’s bringing Sense8 back for a second season. While there are no details as to when the sci-fi series is making its return, this is heartening news if you’ve been sitting on pins and needles for the past two months. Netflix is normally quick to announce additional seasons when it has a hit on its hands, so there was a real concern that this out-there programming (which hasn’t always been a critical darling) would quietly get the axe. Whatever the reasons behind the delay, you can set your mind at ease… at least, for now.
Birthdays are just the beginning. #sense8 is reborn. https://t.co/tmMV66gKhm
