Galaxy Note 5 major specs and press image revealed by @evleaks

note 5 edge s6 plus evleaks

Gone are the days when Samsung was capable of keeping its wares under covers until the big reveal. The Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus have been leaking profusely and now ongoing inside info purveyor Evan Blass just opened the tap a little more.

@evleaks published what appear to be press images of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, along with some of the key specifications of the S Pen-sporting device.

The images don’t reveal anything we haven’t seen in various leaks and renders before, though there’s one inconsistency that cast a shade of doubt over their accuracy: the capacitive keys on the Note 5 appear to be oversized, though that’s likely just a graphical error.

Moving on to a tweet that @evleaks put out just minutes ago, specs of the Galaxy Note 5 (SM-N920) allegedly include an Exynos 7420 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a 5.66-inch 2560×1440 display, a 16MP rear camera (likely featuring the ISOCELL sensor that Samsung unveiled earlier this week), a 5MP front camera (probably wide angle), Android 5.1.1 and no microSD card.

Yes, Samsung appears determined to phase out microSD, come hell, high water, or violent fan revolt.

With a couple of weeks to go until the official debut of the Note 5, it looks like Samsung is running out of major surprises to spice up its Unpacked event – unless you consider the circular Gear A smartwatch a major device. For a look at all the other reports about the Note 4, check out our rumor roundup.

Thoughts on the specs?

Surgeons practice on 3D-printed models for kids’ operations

Surgeons at Boston Children’s Hospital started using 3D-printed copies of patients’ affected body parts to prepare for procedures last year. Now, that move has helped save the lives of four children aged two months to 16 years old who suffered from life-threatening blood vessel malformation in their brains. Their condition gave ride to distinctive anatomies that one of the hospital’s neurosurgeon, Edward Smith, said were really tricky to operate on. So, the doctors used a combination of 3D printing and synthetic resins to conjure up copies of the kids’ deformed vessels, along with nearby normal counterparts and surrounding brain anatomy. That gave them the chance to practice extensively beforehand and reduce possible complications on the operating table.

Smith said the models allowed them to “view [the formations] from different angles, practice the operation with real instruments and get tactile feedback.” It was especially beneficial for three of the four patients, as they had arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) — their arteries and veins were all tangled up — that required the surgeons to cut blood vessels as quickly as possible, and in a certain sequence. Thanks to their preparations, the surgeons managed to fix the kids’ distorted blood vessels and cut surgery time by 30 minutes each. Smith and his colleague Darren Orbach now plan to use 3D printing to train younger doctors and for even trickier cases in the future.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus press renders leaked

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_5_Galaxy_S6_Edge_Plus

Nowadays it so common for leaks and rumours to divulge full specifications of devices that keeping them under wraps until their official launch will be a real feat to achieve for any company. Anticipation has been building up around Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus for sometime, and now, what appears to be their press renders, have been leaked by @evleaks.

Evan Blass had retired from the leaking business a while back, but he seems to be making a comeback by posting images of soon-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus via his Twitter handle @evleaks,.

Both devices are expected to be launched globally on August 13th. If we go by the earlier leaks, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ is a larger variant of the Galaxy S6 Edge. According to its listing on Indian import-export website Zauba, the phablet will feature a 5.7-inch display and 16-megapixel rear snapper as seen in the S6 Edge.As far as the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 are concerned, rumor has it that it will be powered by an Exynos 7422 chipset and will come with the S Pen housed in a tube-like home at the bottom right of the phablet. The S Pen will come with an auto eject feature that will come handy if you frequently use S Pen specific functions.

Sony to shut down its online store August 28

sony_logo_720

Sony announced today via an email to customers and a notice on its website that it will be shutting down its online store come August 28 at 1pm PST. If you were looking to buy a device straight from Sony, you’ll need to act fast.

It’s not clear as to why Sony is shutting down the online store, however, it could be entirely possible that its US store just isn’t receiving enough customers. Sony did say that it will “soon unveil a new online product showcase and more ways to shop.” We’re not entirely sure what it entails, but Sony could drop some hints during its scheduled announcement next week.

It’s also not clear as to whether this just affects the US store or other regions as well.

Either way, if you’ve got store credit or gift cards lying around, now is the best time to go on a shopping spree!

Sony Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5 leaked in full glory

Sony_Xperia_C5_Ultra_and_M5

Ahead on their official announcement, two new mid-range Sony Xperia devices have been leaked in their full glory. One of them happens to be the bezel-less 6-incher Xperia C5 Ultra, while the other – the Xperia M5 – looks like a stripped down version of Sony’s current flagship, the Xperia Z3+.

According to a report published in Hi-Tech.Mail.ru, the Xperia C5 will feature a massive 6-inch FHD (1080p) display with 0.8mm thin side frame, as we had revealed earlier. Although phablet comes with a huge screen, handling it should not be very difficult thanks to its clever built and design. Speaking of which, the handset features a glossy plastic body with metal sides. It will be available in white, black and mint colors.

In the imaging department, the Xperia C5 Ultra will feature 13-megapixel front and back camera sensors, aided by LED flash on both sides.

As far as the hardware is concerned, the Xperia C5 will be powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6752 processor clocked at 1.7 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB expandable inbuilt storage and a 2,930 mAh battery. Connectivity options include dual-SIM card slots and NFC. It is likely to be priced around $343 to $359 in the United States.

Now let’s move on to the smaller handset of the pack – the Xperia M5. It appears to have taken design inspirations from the Xperia Z3+. Featuring a 5-inch FHD IPS display, the device is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 processor clocked at  2 GHz in addition to 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB internal memory. It will house a 2,600 mAh battery, which should keep the device going for two days. The camera specifications of the handset look quite promising as it feature a 21.5-megapixel Exmor RS sensor capable of hybrid autofocus, f/2.2 and fast autofocusing (0.2 seconds) and 5x zoom without any loss in the image quality. The front-facing camera will have a 13-megapixel sensor for quality selfies and video-calling.

According to the Russian website, the device also has IP65/IP68 dust and water certification. Likely to be priced around $390 – $406, the Xperia M5 will come in black, silver and gold colors. Both devices will be launched this week as Sony had indicated in a teaser earlier.

Former Mt. Gox CEO arrested in Japan over missing bitcoin

JAPAN-FINANCE-FOREX-IT-BITCOIN

It’s been months since Tokyo police revealed their belief that the Mt. Gox bitcoin heist was an inside job, and tonight they arrested its former CEO, Mark Karpeles. Some 650,000 bitcoin still remain unaccounted for since the exchange shut down in 2014, which Karpeles blamed on a computer flaw. According to the Wall Street Journal and The Japan News, police in Japan believe Karpeles manipulated the balances of the accounts using it to counter orders from customers and that some of the missing bitcoin may have never existed at all.

At the time, the total amount of missing bitcoin was worth nearly $500 million, although prices have dropped significantly since then. In an email, Karpeles told the WSJ the charges were false, and he would deny them. He has not been formally charged yet, and in Japan, one can be detained for up to 23 days before charges are filed. In blog posts since Mt. Gox shut down Karpeles has pledged to “continue fighting” to get the truth out about what happened, but at the moment, the authorities aren’t buying it.

US reportedly planning to scare off China’s hackers, somehow

UNCLASSIFIED//FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY: Bryan Shindledecker With Niko The Diabetic Service K9

So how will the US government respond to a recent spate of attacks by hackers, including one that extracted an unprecedented amount of data on government employees from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)? The LA Times and New York Times suggest the Obama administration has decided it must retaliate against China, which is believed to be behind the attacks, but is still working out how to do it. Comments from government officials like Director of National Intelligence James Clapper have highlighted “deterrence” as an ideal outcome, but how?

NSA director and military Cyber Command…commander Admiral Michael Rogers has mentioned “creating a cost” for hackers like the ones that hit Sony Pictures, and NYT sources suggest that as an alternative to economic sanctions or lawsuits by the Justice Department, retaliatory attacks may be on the table. One idea is apparently to pierce the “Great Firewall” China uses to restrict information. If any of this is even possible, just leaking it out to the media might actually be creating the desired effect, but none of that even matters until the government and potential business targets secure their own data — exactly the point of the White House’s recent “30 day cybersecurity sprint.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome back to Android Apps Weekly! Here are your headlines for this week:

  • First up this week, Google is introducing two new ways for developers to beta test apps. The first is an open beta where all you need is the link while the other allows users to sign up using their email addresses. Prepare for far more betas to hit the Play Store in the future.
  • Last November, Microsoft released the Visual Studio Emulator for Android. The only problem with it was that developers had to use Visual Studio to develop apps. Now developers can use Android Studio or Eclipse and still use the Visual Studio Emulator and life was good again.
  • In one of the bigger headlines this week, Google announced that they’ll be eliminating the need to sign into Google+ to comment on YouTube. This, paired with the news that Google+ will be removed from other services, has kick started yet another round of rumormill nonsense about Google+ shutting down. It’s probably not.
  • Bethesda announced Fallout Shelter back at E3 earlier this year and said it was coming to Android but not specifically when. We now have an official release date which is August 13th. That’s two weeks folks, so get your thumbs ready!
  • Microsoft is developing an Android launcher called Arrow Launcher. It’s in private beta right now but you can find the download here. It’s a little light on customization features but an overall strong effort that actually feels like something for Android. We expect it to do quite well.

For even more Android apps and games news, updates, and releases, don’t forget to check out this week’s newsletter. There you’ll find all the content we didn’t have time for here. NUU Mobile Z8 review

Buy now on Amazon

Until very recently, the norm in the Android world was that there was a very clear distinction in every aspect between the high-end, mid-range, and the entry-level, be it with regards to build quality, specifications, features, and sometimes even the version of the Android OS the device would be running. While the big names in Android fought hard in the high-end arena, smaller companies had the opportunity to make a name for themselves in the affordable smartphone segment.

This may be the status quo no longer, particularly in 2015, but there are still some good devices on offer from some lesser known brands. One such company is Hong Kong based NUU Mobile, with the company bringing an affordable, 4G LTE-enabled device intended for the US market. Does this smartphone manage to stand out in the ever-growing crowd? We find out, in this full review of the NUU Mobile Z8!

Design

NUU Mobile Z8-2

As far as the design language is concerned, the NUU Mobile Z8 doesn’t stray too far from the standard, offering a familiar look and feel, albeit without an obvious inspiration. The glossy plastic rear cover comes with a faux metallic finish, that helps keep it resistant to fingerprints, and its tapered edges allows for the device to fit snugly in the hand. The back cover is a little difficult to remove though, which is a slight concern, given that you have to to access the microSD card slot, dual SIM card slots, and the replaceable battery. With a thickness of 9.4 mm and weighing 146 grams, the device does feel solid in the hand as well.

NUU Mobile Z8-11

Looking around the device, the volume rocker and the power button are on the left and right sides respectively, and the buttons do offer a solid tactile feel when pressed. Considering the larger overall footprint of the device though, a slightly lower placement of the power button would have made for a better handling experience. The capacitive navigation keys are found below the display, and depending on which device you are switching from, the placement of the Recent Apps key on the left and back button on the right can take some getting used to. The headphone jack is up top, and the microUSB port can be found along the bottom of the right side.

NUU Mobile Z8-4

An unique design aspect with the Z8 is the inclusion of a notification light integrated into the chin of the device, similar to what was seen with the OPPO Find 7, but in a slightly different implementation. There’s no denying that the breathing effect that this non-traditional notification light allows for looks great, and is a great addition to an otherwise uninspired design.

Display

NUU Mobile Z8-1

The NUU Mobile Z8 features a 5.5-inch gapless IPS LCD display, with a 1080p resolution, resulting in a pixel density of 401 ppi. Quad HD may be all the rage nowadays, but Full HD certainly more than gets the job done, especially when considering the mid-range nature of this device. The display performs very well, with excellent color reproduction and great viewing angles. The maximum brightness is still relatively dim though, which does negatively affect outdoor visibility.

This particular review unit arrived with an LCD bright spot out of the box, and while NUU Mobile confirmed that you will be able to pick up a replacement under their standard 2-year warranty, it does raise some concerns. Further, this screen is quite the fingerprint magnet, which can be annoying to some users. A tempered glass screen protector will be available in a few weeks for the Z8 however, which will hopefully make this less of an issue.

Performance

NUU Mobile Z8-13

Under the hood, the NUU Mobile Z8 packs an octa-core, 64-bit MediaTek MT6752 processor, clocked at 1.7 GHz, and backed by the Mali-T760 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. This processing package proved to be a solid and reliable performer, and handled day to day activities with relative ease. 2 GB of RAM allows for some comfortable multi-tasking, and the device also handled gaming very well.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

The overall experience felt just as fast as the Asus Zenfone 2, with its arguably superior processing package, and this similarity is reflected in the benchmark scores as well. Of course, some of the credit for this smooth performance has to be given to the stock Android software, which does allow for a very fluid and stutter-free experience.

Hardware

NUU Mobile Z8-15

The NUU Mobile Z8 comes with 16 GB or 32 GB built-in storage options, with the latter available now, and the former being released early next month. Both versions come with support for expandable storage, via microSD card, by up to 64 GB. The device also comes with a standard suite of connectivity options, including MediaTek’s take on NFC, which is the HotKnot data exchange feature, which is limited to just smartphones and tablets featuring MediaTek processing packages. There were some noticeable connectivity issues however, with the Wi-Fi not very strong, leading to a lot of dropped connections, along with the GPS failing to find a lock indoors, and requiring some time when outdoors. Once connected, there were fortunately no issues after that.

NUU Mobile Z8-5

The device does come with full HSPA+ support on the AT&T and T-Mobile network, and while the dual SIM phone does allow for 4G LTE connectivity, it might be difficult to get because of some particular LTE bands not supported. That should change soon though, as NUU Mobile did mention working closely with the network carriers to add these bands, and should be activated soon, which users will receive via an OTA update.

NUU Mobile Z8-14

As far as the rear speaker is concerned, the single speaker on the Z8 does get plenty loud, but can sound a bit distorted, which is disappointing. As is the case with any rear speaker setup as well, it is easy to muffle the sound when the device is placed on a flat surface.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

On the battery front, the NUU Mobile Z8 packs a removable 2,650 mAh battery, that unfortunately didn’t provide the best in terms of battery life. In my initial testing, the device lasted for just 7.5 hours with a screen-on time of 2.5 hours, which is below average by any standard. A software update that followed did result in a slight improvement, with the total time being pushed close to 10 hours, with the screen-on time jumping to 3.5 hours. As such, even average smartphone users will have a difficult time getting a full day of use comfortably out of this device. NUU Mobile did mention that they will continue to improve in this area with future updates, and for now, you do have the option to carry around a spare.

Camera

NUU Mobile Z8-7

The NUU Mobile Z8 comes with a 13 MP rear camera which did allow for some nice looking shots. Autofocus can be a little slow, but capturing the shot after that is fairly quick. There can be a lack of saturation in some images, especially when compared to other similar camera setups, like the Asus Zenfone 2, which actually does tend to oversaturate pictures. Some exposure issues came up as well, where tapping on a light object drops the exposure significantly, and vice versa.

All of the images, however, were very sharp and not lacking in detail. Understandably, the camera does struggle in low light conditions, even when the flash is on. Once again, NUU Mobile confirmed that they will try their best to improve image processing that will be made available to users in future firmware updates. As far as the camera application is concerned, it is the standard open source MediaTek app, and doesn’t really pack a whole lot, apart from a few modes, as well as some granular control over aspects like white balance and ISO.

Software

NUU Mobile Z8-3

On the software side of things, the NUU Mobile Z8 runs a near-stock iteration of Android 5.0 Lollipop, which provides an excellent software experience. Some additions over stock Android include a few gestures, as well as a Clear All Apps button in the multi-tasking screen, which is certainly a very useful addition. The launcher is very similar to the Google Now launcher, except without featuring Google Now, and the Google keyboard is also the default out of the box. What is particularly refreshing is the fact that there is absolutely no bloatware to be found anywhere.

/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */

Some of the gestures added include double tap to wake, drawing an “o” to launch the camera, shaking the device to turn the flashlight on, flip to mute, and wave to mute. All these gestures work very well, but the one to activate the flashlight is limited to only the lockscreen. This functionality will also be improved upon in future updates. Speaking of updates, NUU Mobile promises that this device will receive an official update to Android 5.1 Lollipop, but there is some uncertainty with it going beyond that.

Pricing and final thoughts

The NUU Mobile Z8 is available officially through the company website, as well as via various re-sellers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and HSN. The 16 GB variant, when released, will be priced at $249, and the 32 GB version is currently available for $299, with the included color options being white and black.

NUU Mobile Z8-9

So there you have it for this closer look at the NUU Mobile Z8! The device is certainly a solid offering in the affordable smartphone space, from a company that is relatively new to the US market. There are some positives here, like the excellent display, smooth performance, and fluid software experience. Of course, there are notable drawbacks as well, with its connectivity issues, distorted audio, and poor battery life. There is a lot that can be resolved with future updates, but for now, the Z8 does feel like a work in progress, and given the intense competition in this space, with other fantastic, but similarly-priced, smartphones, this phone is difficult to recommend, at least for now.

[Deal] Alcatel OneTouch’s smartwatch gets bundled with the Idol 3 for $299

alcatel_onetouch_idol_3_watch_bundle

Through August 9, Alcatel OneTouch is running a promotion where its flagship phone and smartwatch are bundled at a very appealing price.

alcatel_onetouch_idol_3_jbl_earphones_TA

Both the Idol 3 and the Watch can be purchased for $299 during the Alcatel OneTouch’s back-to-school promotion. The offer, which is running on the company’s site and Amazon, saves buyers around $150, the same price as the smartwatch alone. That’s quite a steal considering just how good the Idol 3 is. Even better is that ordering the bundle through Alcatel OneTouch directly or Amazon allows Prime members to receive free two-day shipping.
