Samsung Galaxy S5 Active finally spotted in the flesh, gets two video Rundowns

Samsung Galaxy S5 ActiveSomebody at Samsung must be exercising their super spy skills because TK Tech News is rolling in the Samsung leaks these days. The latest device to get a rundown by TK is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, specifically the AT&T version; we suspected that a previous device might have been the S5 Active, but this time the device is very clearly the real deal. Sporting a much beefier, waterproof exterior compared to the regular Galaxy S5, the S5 Active bears the same hallmarks of its predecessor including physical multitasking and back buttons and additional shielding on the case. Check it out in the video below:

If that’s not enough to satiate your leak cravings, TK went on to perform some benchmarks in a later video. You will see that the S5 Active has very similar specs to the regular Galaxy S5, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM, a 1080p display, a 15.9 MP camera and Android 4.4.2.

As you can see in the videos, the S5 Active is every bit as fast and powerful as the Galaxy S5 with the added benefit of more protection and waterproofing (though we hope Samsung has revised their warranty terms this time around). We haven’t heard when Samsung is going to announce and release the device officially, but it’s looking as ready as ever and we should be seeing it in the very near future. Let us know what you think about the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active in the comments below.

Bounden is an iPhone dancing game that gets better when you hold hands

Bounden dancing app

You met on Tinder, you romanced on Snapchat, and now your smartphone can also help you to get physical. (No, not in that way, pervert.) An iPhone game called Bounden has just arrived at the App Store and it’s designed (in partnership with a ballet company, no less) to instruct you on how to make beautiful shapes with another person. As demonstrated in the video below, you both hold onto the phone and then try to move some gyro-responsive dots around the screen. Get it right, and you end up with some nice twirls, a high score and a partner for life. All for $4.

eBay wants all users to change their passwords

PayPal password request screenshot

eBay has just posted a strange message up on the community homepage and press page of its daughter company, PayPal. The headline is a bit worrying, implying that eBay has possibly had some kind of security or maintenance problem, leading it to request all users to change their passwords. On the other hand, the body of the post is empty except for the words “placeholder text,” and nothing has yet been published on eBay’s own site. We’ve contacted eBay’s press office to find out what (if anything) is going down, but in the meantime it might be worth changing those passwords, just in case.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (N910) may have a 5.7-inch Quad HD Display

Samsung Galaxy Note 4After the relatively pedestrian reception of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Samsung has said that it is looking for a way to refocus its efforts in the premium smartphone market, starting with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 that is expected to be released later this year. While Samsung has said they are considering a new form factor for the Note 4, it doesn’t look like they are going to stray too far size-wise from yesteryear’s 5.7-inch Note 3. In fact, according to a tip handed to GSM Arena, it looks like the Note 4, which carries the model number N910, will have a 5.7-inch Quad HD display.

This may be a relief for some expectant Note 4 owners who may have been scared the next generation Galaxy Note to balloon beyond the 6-inch threshold, however it looks like Samsung thinks the Note has found its niche at 5.7-inches. The Quad HD screen is by no means a surprise, and actually makes a lot of sense for a phablet with the extra screen real-estate, making for 515 ppi clarity, by no means a small amount. It’s probably notable to see that the Galaxy S5 Prime also features in this list, implying that it’s still on its way.

What do you think about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 potentially staying at the same screen size as last year? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Box updated to version 3.0, new design is here along with some other improvements

box 3.0 update____

There are many cloud storage services you can choose from these day on Android, Google Drive, Dropbox, MEGA, Box, OneDrive, etc. Every one of those services has its positive and negative sides of course and the competition is fierce. Well, Box is trying to fix some of its negatives in their new major update for Android.

Box always had one advantage over its competitors and that is its availability on numerous different platforms. Well, that is not the case any longer, at least not the way it used to be. These days the biggest cloud services are available on all 3 major mobile platforms. That didn’t stop Box from going forward though, they constantly keep upping their game on every front.

Box for Android reached 3.0 version and with the update came new features. Not only did Box continue its partnership with LG by offering its users (those which “G series” smartphones, you can check the details here) 50GB of storage, but they worked on the design of the app and added a previewer that supports more than 100 file types which you can open. You get grid views, page thumbnails and the option to search text within the documents themselves directly from the app. Along with all this they added a new gallery tool so you can easily preview images stored on Box, a tool that was much needed.

Full changelog:

  • Lightning fast document previewer with pagination, search-in-document, presentation mode, and more
  • Improved gallery for viewing images
  • New native OneCloud app gallery
  • Overhauled menus in the action bar
  • Additional sliding menu on individual file and folder rows
  • Improved side navigation pane
  • Information headers inside folders
  • New user tour and tutorial
  • Polish and Turkish localization updates
  • New secure authentication process (will require a new login)

I personally use Box as one solution for my cloud needs, do you use it? What is your cloud storage preference?

Lenovo overtakes Apple in US PC sales for the first time

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon

Apple has rightly made a big deal of the fact that its Mac sales have continued to grow, in spite of a contracting PC market. But Cupertino certainly isn’t alone in having figured out how to win at desktops and laptops: Lenovo has just reported big gains in its full-year revenue and profits, and it claims that its PC shipments in the US overtook Apple’s for the first time, grabbing the No. 3 spot behind the more stagnant giants, HP and Dell. This claim is based on data for the last three months, likely with a bit of help from analysts at IDC, although it’s worth pointing out that Gartner still had Lenovo in fourth place in the US as recently as April. Whichever pundits you listen to, Lenovo has now dominated the PC market globally for around a year, thanks to its ever-expanding ThinkPad line, while also growing its non-Windows tablet and smartphone sales — with the latter soon to become a lot more prevalent in the US now that the company owns Motorola.

Samsung’s extra-rugged Galaxy S5 variant gets caught on video

Samsung Galaxy S5 Active

Rumors of a truly rough-and-ready Galaxy S5 variant have so far had little support beyond vague filings and benchmarks. However, TK Tech News has just delivered the motherlode: it has posted hands-on videos (below) of what looks to be a Galaxy S5 Active for AT&T. The rugged device shown on camera shares a few superficial similarities with its bulked-up Galaxy S4 Active ancestor, including the all-mechanical navigation keys. However, this isn’t as much of a step down as last year’s toughened Galaxy — the GS5 Active appears to have the same 16-megapixel camera as the regular S5, and it sports an ever-so-slightly faster variant of its sibling’s Snapdragon 801 processor.

With that in mind, it’s not clear how close this is to the final design. Besides the drab pre-production look, there’s some questions over the display choice. TK swears that the device is using a greater-than-1080p screen, but a benchmark suggests otherwise; our money is on a normal 1080p panel, since there haven’t been any hints that the Active would outshine its regular counterpart on that front. There aren’t any telltale clues as to when this outdoor-friendly handset will ship, either, although the videos suggest that Samsung is making good progress.
