Qualcomm

A very interesting video has appeared on Vimeo by user, samjasuja, who is showing how the Gimbel beacon completly trashes your phone through Bluetooth and ultimately leads to a factory reset.  Don’t let this happen to you!

HTC finally confirms red One M8, but only in Taiwan

Red HTC One M8

HTC has finally confirmed that red is coming to their lineup of colors for the HTC One M8.  However, it is only available in Taiwan for the moment being.  HTC has not commented on an global release of the red variant, but they did provide a really nice 3D render of it.

Could Verizon be seeing the red variant soon? It has been rumored and it would make sense, given that Verizon is “The Red Carrier” and had an exclusive at launch.  There has also been rumors of a metallic blue version as well.  Hopefully we’ll see more colors added to the already fantastic HTC One M8.  If you haven’t checked out our HTC One M8 review, check it out here.

‘Halo 5: Guardians’ and live-action Halo TV show set for fall 2015 launch

We’ve known for a while that there’s new Halo game coming to Xbox One and that it could possibly make its debut this year. Today, Microsoft and 343 Industries provided some additional details on the project, most notably that the next instalment in the franchise will be called Halo 5: Guardians and that it will be pushed back to a fall 2015 launch. So what can we expect? Game specifics are scarce but we know that, like Titanfall, Guardians run on dedicated servers. However, unlike its mech-smashing counterpart, it will run at a glorious 60 frames-per-second.

“Halo 5: Guardians is a bigger effort than Halo 4,” says 343 general manager Bonnie Ross. “That applies to content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine.” Ross also confirmed that the live-action Halo TV series, which sees 343 Industries team up with Steven Spielberg to bring Master Chief to life, may also debut around the same time as Guardians. While you’ll have to wait until next year to enjoy both the game and the TV series in their full form, Ross suggests Microsoft and 343 will have more to reveal in the coming months, starting with the Xbox 2014 Media Briefing at E3 on June 9th.

EFF praises major tech companies for doing more to protect your data

EFF privacy ranking table showing Apple, Adobe etc

The jury (or rather, congress) is still out on how Snowden’s now-legendary leaks will effect the NSA, but it’s certainly changed how companies handle user data. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s latest “Who Has Your Back?” transparency report, 2014 is a landmark year for user privacy — Apple, Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Twitter all earned perfect scores in the report’s six-point evaluation. The scoring metric awards stars for companies that require the government to get a warrant before collecting user data, or to firms that publish their own transparency reports. Overall, the report shows a marked improvement over last year, but the EFF still highlights other big companies that could do a lot more to protect and reassure their users.

“Transparency reports have become the industry standard for major tech companies,” the report reads. “But Adobe, Amazon, Foursquare, Myspace, Wikimedia and Snapchat have yet to publish a report.” The EFF specifically chews out Amazon for having “a tremendous amount of user data,” but no clear way for users to evaluate its policies on how law enforcement can access that data. Even so, the EFF ends its conclusions on a high note, saying that most companies are “heading in the right direction.” Check out the full report at the source link below.

Fancy ash tray rewards smokers for not littering with a song and light show

Some places impose hefty fines to prevent cigarette littering, but a group of Dutch designers believe that the answer lies in rewarding smokers for doing the right thing instead. So, the team designed a souped up trash can called Fumo that lights up like a disco ball and plays music like a jukebox when you toss in a cigarette butt. It even starts blinking the moment you step close, just so you know it’s not some boring receptacle before you even get the chance to try it out — and no, check the calendar if you must, it’s not an April Fool’s joke. The designers say the trash can can also be tweaked depending on the purpose: for instance, it can incorporate interactive elements for festivals or play solemn music if it’s meant to be installed in front of a hospital. According to a recent research, around 4.5 trillion cigarette remnants end up as trash every year, so it really is a big issue that might only be solved by banning filters altogether. As to whether Fumo has the potential to minimize cigarette litter or if it’s just a gimmicky idea whose novelty will wear off quickly, you tell us after watching it in action after the break.

When you land at Heathrow Terminal Galaxy S5, you’ll know who to blame

Terminal 5, Heathrow, with photoshopped Samsung Galaxy S5 branding

A Samsung-sized marketing budget buys airport-sized publicity stunts, as you may well notice if you fly to or from Heathrow this month. For two weeks, starting May 19th, the owners of the “world’s busiest terminal” have allowed Samsung, in partnership with JCDecaux, to re-brand all Terminal 5 signage at entrances, security points and gates as “Terminal Samsung Galaxy S5.” And who cares if that sounds like an illness?

Google puts Mattel and Disney designer Ivy Ross in charge of Glass

Google has just made a creative choice for its new head of Glass, picking one-time Mattel design lead and noted jewelery artist Ivy Ross. That signals a big shift away from Glass’ geeky developer base while it transitions to a full-fledged consumer product. She would fill the position previously held by Babak Parviz as Google’s Glass lead and work under Google X for Astro Teller and co-founder Sergei Brin. On the Google Glass G+ page, Ross said that she’s spent her career “at the intersection of design and marketing” and that she’ll be looking to answer some of the “audacious questions” around Glass. Though she didn’t say so, some of those will no doubt revolve around privacy and other contentious issues with the upcoming product.

Prior to working at Google, Ross worked as head designer for Mattel, Disney, Swatch, Coach, Calvin Klein and Art.com, her last job. She was also the eyewear design lead at optical outfit Bausch and Lomb in the ’90s, and her woven titanium jewellery designs are in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection (her TedX talk on design and creativity is below). Ross’ creative and retail background should help on the design and marketing front, and many think Glass badly needs design help. In addition, she’s already asking some interesting questions about the product’s potential, like whether it can keep us in the present, unlike other tech products. It remains to be seen, however, if her background has prepared her to solve the more difficult problems around Glass — like how to prevent the anger of people who think their privacy is being violated.

Bitcoin bank entices mom and pop with insurance, fraud checks and zero fees

Circle Bitcoin bank

If Bitcoin is meant to be an anonymous, decentralized currency that is free of intermediaries and national restrictions, then today’s launch of a new Bitcoin bank, called Circle, might seem deeply antithetical. Circle’s website does its utmost to look like that of an ordinary financial service, using words like “withdrawing,” “depositing” and “digital money,” instead of the usual terms about buying and selling Bitcoins. It follows US anti-money laundering rules, requiring users to identify themselves, and it expects you to connect your Bitcoin account to your normal credit card or bank accounts. Crypto-currency purists just aren’t going to dig it, but then again Circle claims to offer some serious advantages that are missing from other, more direct approaches to Bitcoin banking…

It charges no fees for anything (at least not right now), which makes it a relatively friction-free way of accessing money in a range of local currencies; it insures deposits against Mt. Gox-style calamities; it stores “most” of its holdings offline to safeguard it from hackers, and it even has a customer service phone line. For someone with relatives or business interests in other countries, who has to deal with unstable banks or currencies, Circle could well serve as an enticement to use Bitcoin for the first time, which is exactly its stated objective. But of course it glosses over the fact that “digital money” itself can be highly unstable, and the friendly voice at the other end of that customer service line is bound to sound a little hollow if the underlying worth of your savings suddenly plummets.

Cuba’s first independent digital news will be sent via cellphones and flash drives

A man uses a mobile phone in a street in

Cubans haven’t had an above-ground, independent digital news outlet in their country so far — not surprising when their government only allowed personal cellphone and computer sales six years ago. However, all that’s set to change when blogger Yoani Sanchez launches her digital newspaper 14ymedio on May 21st. Rather than simply publish news on the web, the team will get the word out through whatever technology Cubans can use: cellphones, email, CDs and even USB flash drives are fair game.

The group is already getting some pushback from the Castro administration, which still treats criticism of the communist party as a criminal offense. However, 14ymedio’s by-any-means-necessary approach to digital distribution could make censorship difficult; officials can’t simply block a website or email address. Whether or not Sanchez’ project lasts, it’s a potentially important experiment in a land where networking tends to be either closely monitored or very unofficial.

Upcoming Xbox history show will let you ‘play TV’

Bust of Roman emperor Commodus as Hercules

Microsoft has been teasing a level of interactivity within its slate of original Xbox video programming, but what kind of control will you actually get? The company isn’t revealing everything right now, but it just gave Deadline Hollywood a few small clues. TV producer Stephen David is creating a documentary/drama hybrid for Xbox Entertainment Studios that he says will be “like playing television.” In the inaugural 13 Days of Blood episode, which shows Roman history through the eyes of emperor Commodus (seen in marble here), there will be “new, interactive technology” that should “bring fight scenes to life,” according to Microsoft.

This sounds tantalizing, but it’s clear that the company is keeping its cards close to the vest. While the interaction could involve a full-fledged game component, it could equally be a simple matter of choosing camera angles as you watch gladiators and retiarii slug it out. The docudrama also isn’t due until 2015, so the odds aren’t great that you’ll hear much more about it this year. Nonetheless, these early tidbits give us a better idea of what to expect from Microsoft’s first experiments with self-branded shows.
