EU court says Google must remove links to personal data if it’s asked to

Google’s recent run of bad luck in Europe has reached new heights after it was told it must take down links to personal information found in its search results. The Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) today ruled that Google should be made responsible for processing links to personal data which appears on third-party websites, so it must allow users to request that outdated or irrelevant information be removed. Google has long argued that such a ruling amounts to censorship, but Europe’s top court agrees with the European Commission’s belief that people should have the “right to be forgotten.”

The ruling came after a Spanish man complained to local regulators that Google had indexed an auction notice on his home from 1998. Google refused to delete the information, so the ECJ was asked to step in. Although today’s ruling has not yet been passed into law, the court says users who want to remove their name from search providers’ results can “approach the operator directly and, where the operator does not grant his request, bring the matter before the competent authorities in order to obtain, under certain conditions, the removal of that link from the list of results.” We’ve reached out to Google for comment and will report back once we receive a response.

Twitter adds muting options to mobile apps

twitter_720

Twitter has announced a new feature which allows you to mute people.  The update is coming to Android, iPhone, and twitter.com users over the course of this week.  The feature is nice to have when you have that friend that is just retweeting everything and you just want a break. Well mute them and they willl never even know!

Twitter for Android (5.8.0) has the mute feature ready to go.  So go ahead, clean up your feed and not hurt your friend’s feelings! Below is the official excerpt from Twitter.

In the same way you can turn on device notifications so you never miss a Tweet from your favorite users, you can now mute users you’d like to hear from less. Muting a user on Twitter means their Tweets and Retweets will no longer be visible in your home timeline, and you will no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that user. The muted user will still be able to fave, reply to, and retweet your Tweets; you just won’t see any of that activity in your timeline. The muted user will not know that you’ve muted them, and of course you can unmute at any time.

Samsung unveils 1.5TB “Wireless media device” for smartphones

samsung wireless device

Terabytes have become extremely common in external hard drives, but what if you could harness that kind of power for your smartphone? That’s exactly what Samsung aims to do with their new wireless media device.

Designed to be lightweight and portable, this new accessory allows you to carry around 750 movies with you anywhere you go. Not to mention countless numbers of songs or pictures. This content can be taken with you just about anywhere, and streamed through WiFi to up to 5 different devices at a time.

The Samsung Wireless is available around the world for the price of $179, and for the storage space we think it would be worth it! No longer do you need to worry about the on-board storage of your smartphone, or even the petty 128GB microSD card limit in newer phones (sarcasm intended), but now 1.5TB is completely at your disposal.

All of these things combined with the portability to carry on your person make for what we think could change the storage game for mobile phone users. Oh, and did we mention it can also charge your phone? So there’s no need to carry around that fancy portable power bank you just bought either. Check it out now at Samsung HDD!

Blue HTC One (M8) shows its face in a leaked render

HTC One (M8) blue

HTC One (M8) is definitely one of the best (Android) handsets of the year so far. The HTC flagship is available in 3 colors, Gunmetal Gray, Glacier Silver, and Amber Gold. While it has been leaked in red we’ve never seen it in blue, until now that is.

A blue version of HTC One (M8) has surfaced, courtesy of evleaks. Considering their track record we’re quite confident this metallic blue color will become official in the near future. The color reminds us of a metallic blue version o M8′s predecessor, HTC One (M7).

What do you think about this color, do you like it or not? Maybe you’re waiting for some other color option?

Apple Preparing HD Audio Playback for iOS 8 Alongside New In-Ear Headphones and Lightning Connector

ituneslogo.jpg Apple is said to be introducing high definition audio playback in iOS 8 alongside new versions of its In-Ear Headphones and Lightning connector, according to a report from Mac Otakara (Google Translate).

Building off of a report last month which claimed that Apple will announce high-fidelity iTunes music downloads at this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), the post notes that Apple will enable high-quality audio files to be played on iOS 8 compatible devices.

Currently, iOS 7′s stock Music app cannot play high quality 24-bit audio files. Additionally, while third-party apps such as Onkyo’s HF Player and FLAC Player are able to play said audio files, users are still limited to onboard playback at a 16-bit rate. Apple is also said to be preparing a new Lightning cable to enable high-definition playback on Made For iPhone (MFi) audio accessories, although it isn’t clear when the company would introduce the updated wire.

Apple’s In-Ear Headphones
Finally, the report notes that Apple is working on a new version of its In-Ear Headphones to accommodate high-quality audio playback. The premium in-ear headphones have not been updated since 2008, however the product is still officially sold by Apple at its retail locations and in its Online Store for $79.

Apple is expected to introduce iOS 8 at WWDC 2014, which will kick off on June 2. In addition to potentially enabling high-definition audio playback, the new mobile operating system is expected to include major improvements to Siri and Maps along with a rumored “Healthbook” app that displays various fitness and health-related information.

Apple will also likely debut OS X 10.10 at the event, and may introduce Beats Electronics co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre as new senior advisers following a likely forthcoming announcement regarding its acquisition of the audio company.

If LG’s working on a Windows Phone 8 handset, this is what it’ll look like

A picture is worth a thousand words, which is good, because the above image is all we’ve got. The gadget industry’s person-in-the-know, evleaks, has posted what purports to be a shot of the LG Uni8, the company’s first Windows Phone 8 device. The Uni8 would also be the first LG Windows phone since 2010, back in the days of the Optimus 7 and AT&T’s Quantum. Given that the platform is struggling in the US and Asia, not to mention Microsoft’s newly-minted purchase of Nokia, it seems an odd time for LG to leap back into the fold — not that we’re complaining, mind.

How Amiga hackers saved Andy Warhol’s digital images

A new documentary from the HIllman Photography Iniative (see the video below) has revealed exactly how those now-famous Andy Warhol Amiga works were extracted from decrepit 3.5-inch floppies. First, researchers had to figure out that the image files were actually saved on the original graphics program diskettes due to quirks in the early Amiga 1000 system. Once the disks were found, Amiga forensics specialists wanted to be the last people to touch them for the sake of their preservation. Since the magnetic material was separating from the substrate, they made sure to read the floppies just once to create a disk image. From there, they used an Amiga emulator to dive into the filesystem, with the “Eureka!” moment coming when they saw filenames like “campbells.pic” and “marilyn1.pic.” A quick conversion later, and the images appeared — as dramatic a moment for the programmers as spotting a Warhold painting at a flea market.

Motorola adds LTE to its mid-range Moto G handset

SONY DSC

Motorola’s Moto G was a great handset, but if we had a gripe, it was that it lacked a 4G modem. Last night, however, Amazon let it be known that a tweaked version of Motorola’s mid-ranger was coming, and this time it would be able to take advantage of super-fast mobile speeds. At the London launch of the Moto E, the company confirmed that the Moto G with LTE is real, and is even packing a microSD card slot, too. The unlocked handset is priced at £150 in the UK, while Amazon believes US pricing to be around $220 with a choice of black or white bodies — and both should be hitting retailers in the next few weeks.
