Carbon Dioxide leak kills Samsung factory worker

Korean news agency Yonhap News is reporting that a gas leak at a Samsung plant in southern Seoul has left one worker dead. A malfunction in the factory’s fire extinguishing system released carbon dioxide after it mistakenly detected fire, asphyxiating a 52-year-old man working in the area. It’s the latest in a string of accidents at Samsung facilities over the past 18 months, raising questions over the safety of Samsung’s operations in South Korea. In January 2013, a major hydrofluoric acid leak at the company’s main chip factory in the city of Hwaseong killed one worker and hospitalized four others, while three more were injured in a similar incident four months later. Samsung confirmed today’s accident on its official website, adding that it will work to prevent similar incidents from happening again. Police are investigating the cause of the leak, but there’s no word on whether Samsung will be punished more severely than the $1,000 fine and official warning it received from officials last year.

Amazon gives Cloud Drive Photos for Android a new interface and simpler navigation

Amazon’s been busy tweaking Prime and planning delivery drones these past months, but by the looks of it, it hasn’t entirely forgotten its lesser-known services. Today, the company has updated the Cloud Drive Photos app for Android with a brand new interface and a navigation bar to make it easier to access your oft-used features. While the refreshed UI retains the older version’s dark color scheme, it comes with new buttons and a new layout. The app now also automatically sorts all videos into one album and arranges photos and albums by date and name. Finally, other than the usual bucket of bug fixes, the new version adds an upload status indicator that shows how long you have to wait until you’re done backing up your files. If these new features make you want to give the app a second chance despite being married to Google Drive or Dropbox, hit the Play link below.

Tesla strikes deal to keep selling its electric cars in Ohio

Model S at a Tesla dealership

Tesla has lately been losing its fight to keep selling cars directly to customers, but it just negotiated an important truce. The EV maker has reached a tentative deal with Ohio that lets it conduct direct sales in the state through a maximum of three stores. If passed into law, the agreement would also prohibit other car companies from trying the same strategy. The compromise doesn’t completely satisfy a rapidly growing Tesla, but it gives both sides a chance to see how the middleman-free approach works without upsetting the status quo for franchise dealerships. It may also help achieve stalemates in New York and other states that are threatening to ban Tesla’s business model outright.

Dell and Microsoft sign mutually helpful Android licensing deal

Dell Venue 8 tablet

Microsoft’s patent agreements with Android and Chrome OS device builders are usually one-sided: the manufacturers sign licensing deals, and Microsoft agrees not to sue them into oblivion. However, the crew in Redmond has just broken with that tradition by forging a cross-licensing pact with Dell. While Dell will still have to pay royalties whenever it sells Google-powered hardware, it’s also licensing patents to Microsoft for use in Xbox consoles. Just what the deal means for gamers (if anything) isn’t clear. It’s safe to presume, though, that Dell can continue to sell Android tablets and Chromebooks without fear of a legal firestorm.

Galaxy S5 hits stores early in Korea, as carriers try to dodge sales suspension

South Korea’s major carriers have pulled their Galaxy S5 launch date forward to, well, today, despite Samsung’s efforts to keep the native networks in line with the global launch date on April 11. According to a statement received by Bloomberg, Samsung is “very puzzled.” “SK strongly asked form an earlier release of the product by we delivered our stance that the global release date of April 11 remains unchanged.” In South Korea, recent illegal discounts from carriers led to the government regulator slapping a 45-day ban on new customer sign-ups. Carriers apparently already have the GS5 in stock for both marketing activities and to cover their pre-orders on launch day.

SK Telecom said that it had decided to offer the GS5 “for a wider consumer choice of handsets before our suspension begins on April 5.” On their network, the phone is priced at $808 and is available online and in-store starting today.

Millennials are watching video on tablets and computers more than TVs

Apparently kids these days prefer to watch shows and movies on things other than a TV. According to a new study by Deloitte, 56 percent of “training millennials” (people ages 14-24) are tuning in to their favorite shows on computers, smartphones, tablets and gaming devices rather than a television. The majority, 32 percent, are watching on their computers, while just 7 percent are keeping up with the Kardashians on their tablets. That’s a huge contrast from grandma’s “mature” 67+ age group where a whopping 92 percent of viewers are still watching the tube the traditional way, and even a noticeable difference from millennials ages 25-30 where 53 percent of viewers are still cuddling up in their Snuggies in front of a traditional set. If the trend continues, all those 4K TV makers might need to look at focusing their efforts on something a little smaller instead.

Twitter is experimenting again, tries replacing ‘retweet’ with ‘share’ button

Twitter can’t help itself. If it’s not new pictures, tweet views and video previews, then it could be an epoch-defining change to what the social network called one of its core features: retweets. So, it’s possibly not a big deal, but in Twitter’s latest experiment, it’s been changed to ‘share’ — terminology closer aligned to its rival, Facebook. For the moment, only a handful of users appear to see the substitute share button and it’s appearing in both the Android and iOS apps. At the same time, and probably unrelated, a new design to profile pages inside mobile apps has also appeared, with a not-so-faint Facebook vibe. Take a look after the break, and if you’re one of the chosen few, let us know your thoughts on either experiment in the comments.

BlinkFeed Will Soon be Available for Non-HTC Devices

HTC-BlinkFeed-play-store

The All New HTC One has finally been made official, and now that it is officially in our lives, we can settle down and wait for the next thing. In the mean time, some of you may be digging HTC’s BlinkFeed, but you don’t have an HTC One device. You’ll be glad to know that BlinkFeed will be making its way into the Pay Store for non-HTC devices to use. Some of you might laugh at the notion, but it actually isn’t a bad little app. We all love news feeds, and there are countless apps for feeds out there, only BlinkFeed really tries to bring all you need together in one smooth running feed.

I guess HTC felt that BlinkFeed was popular enough to release in the Play Store, and they plan on pushing more of their apps into the Play Store as well. Seems to be working for Moto X apps, and it makes them easier to update the app rather than having to push a complete update through an OTA. Let us know what you think about this idea, and if you would download it onto your non-HTC device.
